Beware fake QR codes on parking machines

You may have read about a QR parking machine code scam which, when scanned to pay, the code links to a fraudulent payment page designed to look like the website of the operator.

The code takes you to a fake site that asks for your information in order to pay and then takes money from you for allegedly parking in the car park.

People can be reassured that QR codes are not used in any Wrexham council car parks but some people have been scammed from Aberdeen to Portsmouth and more closely to home in Llandudno and Colwyn Bay – popular day trip areas for Wrexham residents. So if you’re going for a day out please be cautious if you see a QR code on a car park payment machine.

What should I do if I suspect a parking QR code is fake in Wrexham?

If it isn’t in a Wrexham council owned car park you should report direct to the parking operator

If it’s in a Wrexham council owned car park report it to parking@wrexham.gov.uk

You can find out which car parks in Wrexham are council owned on our website.

All our car parks use the JustPark app except for Tŷ Pawb where you can pay using the on-site payment machines after your visit (make sure you pay just before leaving the car park.)

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, said, “With modern technology in place all over the UK to pay for goods and services please be aware of this scam. Not only will you lose your money but you may also be fined for parking without proper payment.”
