Young people gear up for future interviews

Going for an interview can be pretty daunting – especially when you’re just 16 and looking for your first place at college or employment.

Just what do you put on your CV? Will they be interested in this or that? What should I wear? Should I speak first? All things come with experience and at Ysgol Rhiwabon they’ve started giving the opportunity to get that experience early. Ready for the world of college or work.

STAY UP TO DATE – SIGN UP TO RECEIVE OUR TOP STORIES.

They’ve recently worked with Careers Wales to bring employers to the school to undertake mock interviews and nearly 20 employers took up the challenge and put the young people to the test. They ranged from the Army and Wockhardt to Kronospan and BT.

The year 11 pupils certainly rose to the challenge and impressed everyone present with their CVs, answers to questions and of course appearance which the headteacher particularly picked up on:

Mrs Ferron-Evans said: “The feedback received from all employers present was wonderful and I am so proud of the students in how they looked and conducted themselves.”

Careers Wales work with schools across Wrexham and we hope to bring you more news of what they’re up to with our pupils whilst getting them ready for when they leave school at 16.

Lesley Lloyd, Business Engagement Adviser who arranged for this event said: “The pupils did remarkably well and we had excellent feedback from employers who were all very impressed with the way the students presented themselves. They should all be very proud of themselves and I hope it gives them the confidence they need during the coming months as they begin to apply for further education or employment.”

  • Shop, donate and regift…how you can help the reuse shop (and it can help you) this Christmas

Shop, donate and regift…how you can help the reuse shop (and it can help you) this Christmas

On November 16, the reuse shop celebrated its third anniversary – happy birthday! 🙂

Yet somehow, there’s still people in Wrexham who don’t seem to know what it is and where to find it. If you need a reminder, you can find the Nightingale House Hospice reuse shop in Bryn Lane recycling centre 😉

It’s sometimes referred to as a bit of an Aladdin’s cave, although Santa’s grotto might be more appropriate.

That’s because as we’re getting closer to Christmas there’s actually lots of things you can get from the reuse shop to spread some festive cheer.

STAY UP TO DATE – SIGN UP TO RECEIVE OUR TOP STORIES.

“There’s so many things that can be recycled…”

Dave Jones, Manager of the reuse shop, says: “I’m not sure how many people realise they can buy a lot of the stuff they need for Christmas from the reuse shop. An example of this is that lots of people will get any decorations they need from the larger retailers at full cost, but we have plenty in stock that are in excellent condition.

“There’s so many things that can be recycled and we try to rotate our stock to reflect the things people are likely to need at that particular time of year. So if you haven’t stocked up for Christmas yet, pay us a visit…we’ll probably have something you need.”

If you’re in need of baubles, lighting, tinsel or even a full-sized Christmas tree, it’s worth considering the reuse shop as you’ll be doing your bit for recycling, plus you can save yourself a few pennies along the way!

The money you spend at the reuse shop will go towards helping Nightingale House Hospice; a great local charity, which does fantastic work in Wrexham and the surrounding areas.

If you need help filling up those stockings…

Then the reuse shop can definitely help you out. If you’re thinking of buying a TV, go over and take a look…there’s usually an abundance of them in stock, with varying sizes to choose from.

And if you’re unsure about buying a used TV, please know that all items are cleaned and safety tested before they’re sold 🙂

But if you’re after something a bit smaller, there’s usually a selection of items such as gift sets, toys, DVD’s, computer games, board games and cool ornaments to fill up those stockings.

Looking to get fitter in 2020?

A popular New Year’s resolution is getting a bit fitter and always a good starting point for this is cycling.

Need a bike? You’re in luck!

    Reuse shop bikes cycling

The reuse shop has many, many bikes that you can choose from. Children’s bikes or adult bikes – whatever you’re looking for – the reuse shop is bound to have something that fits the bill 🙂

Let’s face it, there’s not many people who wouldn’t want a bike for Christmas. All the bikes are stored outside the shop for you to give them a thorough checking over, so come and pay a visit.

    Regift your unwanted presents

At one time or another we’ve all received Christmas presents that don’t quite hit the mark 🙁

But just because it’s not your cup of tea, this doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be perfect for someone else. Regifting involves giving your unwanted gifts to others and the reuse shop would be very grateful if you’d consider donating these items to them.

Dave adds: “If you receive a gift that you won’t get any use from, please consider donating it to us. Without your donations we couldn’t operate, so we really appreciate everything we receive. We rely on donations all year round, so please think about us when you have your next clear out too.”

You can donate to the re-use shop at any of our three recycling centres; just speak to one of our attendants who’ll point you in the right direction.

Thanks for thinking about recycling and Merry early-Christmas.

The young people are very keen to improve the environment in which we live and learn and we are always keen to support their aspirations. I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the planting which will be appreciated by generations to come.”

Head of Environment and Technical at Wrexham Council, Darren Williams, said: “Everyone is to be commended for their commitment to improving their natural environment. The trees should mature over time to provide an extremely beautiful environment for people to enjoy and ecologically diverse habitat for wildlife.”

  • Unfair trading costs one roofer almost £3,000

Unfair trading costs one roofer almost £3,000

A recent magistrates court case resulted in local roofer, Kenny Baker, trading as Baker’s Roofing, plead guilty to 7 charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. He received fines and costs against him totalling nearly £3,000.

Trading Standards in Wrexham launched an investigation into the roofer’s activities following a string of complaints last year relating to poor or incomplete work, excessive delays and repeated excuses for failure to deliver the contracted services. Three of Mr Baker’s customers gave evidence of repeated delays in carrying out work.

STAY UP TO DATE – SIGN UP TO RECEIVE OUR TOP STORIES.

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead said, “The standard of service provided by Baker’s Roofing was just not acceptable nor what should be expected of professional business. There were long delays in starting the work with a catalogue of excuses and customers attempts to resolve problems were frustrated by being given an out of date address for Mr Baker’s business.”

Good shopping advice from Trading Standards is that if you are considering having work done on your home, choose you builder or contractor with care. Make sure you know who they are and their address. Check how payment is to be made and be very cautious of demands for large payments up front. If they claim to be members of trade associations, check if they are, and whether this is actually of any benefit to the customer. If you can, do some research on line looking for reviews or poor experiences of other customers. Best of all, seek recommendations from friends and family.

Mr Baker fined £120 for each offence totalling 840, Victim Surcharge of £30 and costs of £2,093.

Contractors and traders needed to help our heritage work

Our Townscape Heritage Scheme is looking to restore and conserve many of the historically important buildings within our Town Centre Conservation Area.

But as part of that, we need to hear from the contractors, architects and surveyors who might be able to help us provide the expertise and workforce needed as part of the complementary Traditional Building Skills programme.

With that in mind, we have two ‘Meet the Buyer’ events coming up next week, which will give contractors and traders the chance to meet us and discuss the support they might be able to provide.

  • Drop-in event for town centre businesses on regeneration funding

Drop-in event for town centre businesses on regeneration funding

You might have spotted the recent good news that we’ve secured £1.52 million from the National Lottery for a townscape heritage scheme, which will be delivered in the Wrexham Town Centre Conservation Area for heritage-led regeneration.

As well as the National Lottery funding, we’ve also drawn funding from other sources.

We’ve received £1.5million from the Welsh Government for property improvement, through the Targeted Investment Regeneration Programme, which aims to improve properties by providing gap funding to occupiers and owners, bringing vacant commercial spaces back into business use.

STAY UP TO DATE – SIGN UP TO RECEIVE OUR TOP STORIES.

The programme covers important building grants, property improvements and development grants.

With the two projects running together, and with the variety of regeneration support available, we’re inviting town centre businesses to a drop-in event at the flexible space at Tŷ Pawb, Chester Road, Wrexham, from 3pm on Friday, November 29.

As well as the owners of those buildings which have been identified for improvement under the townscape heritage scheme, we’re also inviting other businesses to see where we might be able to boost possible opportunities for regeneration.

  • Siarter Iaith awards for Wrexham and Flintshire schools

Siarter Iaith awards for Wrexham and Flintshire schools

School children from across Wrexham and Flintshire were rewarded recently for their efforts to use the Welsh language more often outside of the school setting.

The Siarter Iaith (Language Charter) Gold Award was presented to twelve schools from across the two boroughs in a ceremony at Brymbo Sports and Social Club with pupils taking to the stage to accept their awards.

Siarter Iaith is a set of goals outlined by the Welsh Government, with the aim of encouraging more social use of Welsh among young people and ensuring that Welsh isn’t just used in the classroom.

STAY UP TO DATE – SIGN UP TO RECEIVE OUR TOP STORIES.

The work undertaken by the schools supports and directly contributes to priorities identified in Wrexham Council and Flintshire Council’s individual Welsh in Education Strategic Plans (WESP).

Schools across Wrexham and Flintshire started their Siarter Iaith journey back in 2016, and during the last three years all the Welsh medium and dual stream primary schools have taken the bronze and silver awards – with all the schools achieving the gold award by July 2019.

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Each of the schools involved took part in a number of activities to get pupils using the Welsh language more frequently, and pupils had the chance to put their views forward.

The schools receiving the award were:

    Wrexham

    • Ysgol I D Hooson
    • Ysgol Bryn Tabor
    • Ysgol Bodhyfryd
    • Ysgol Cynddelw
    • Ysgol Llanarmon DC
    • Ysgol Min y Ddol
    • Ysgol Bro Alun
    • Ysgol Plas Coch

    Flintshire

    • Ysgol Croes Atti
    • Ysgol Glanrafon
    • Ysgol Mornant
    • Ysgol Terrig

After the ceremony, children took part in activities with co-ordinators from the Urdd.

Bethan Morris, Siarter Iaith Coordinator – who works jointly on behalf of Wrexham Council and Flintshire Council – said: “Congratulations to all those schools who took the Siarter Iaith Gold award – staff and pupils alike.

“A lot of effort has gone in to achieving Siarter Iaith goals at each of the schools involved, and every school has worked incredibly hard to ensure pupils use Welsh not just in the classroom, but with one another outside of school.”
