73 Degree Films Launch New Live Show and Podcast to Support Wrexham City of Culture 2029

The first episode of ‘Live in the Window’ will stream live on Youtube tomorrow, 2 December between 4pm-7pm, with an audio podcast version available on Monday.

The show, hosted by Robert Corcoran and James Stevens, will feature guests, challenges and discussions all related to Wrexham culture.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

“Earlier this year, I sat in a shop window in the city centre and watched the Ryan Reynolds film Green Lantern 100 times. It was totally bizarre, but people seemed to like it! So I wanted to explore a similar format – a live chat show in Wrexham with fun and games – where anyone and everyone can get involved in person and online.”

The show will take place live at 16 Yorke Street. Guests are welcome to watch the show in person and even spin the giant wheel of fortune!

The wheel, which has been constructed and painted by local artists, will allow guests to choose questions and win prizes. Each week a nominated local charity will be selected, if the wheel lands on their section, a donation will be added.

The entire show will be streaming on 73 Degree Films’ Youtube Channel and a podcast version will be available on Monday on all podcast platforms (Spotify, Apple, Amazon + more).

The show has received official support from Wrexham Council, through the cultural commissions for Wrexham 2029 (funding for these projects has derived from the £125,000 runners-up award received from DCMS from the 2025 bid).

“We’re really looking forward to showcasing the best of Wrexham Culture in a new, fun way! If you’d like to get in touch with us, come on the show, sponsor some prizes or get involved, send us an email or message to 73 Degree Films.” – Robert Corcoran

  • Significant funding to educate young people on climate change and carbon emissions

Significant funding to educate young people on climate change and carbon emissions

A partnership collaboration of Wrexham Council, Xplore! Science Discovery Centre and Groundwork North Wales has secured £75,215 from Natural Resources Wales’ Resilient Communities Fund for a project to educate young people on climate change, carbon emissions and taking pride in their local environment.

Xplore! Science Discovery Centre – WILD WATCH Project

The ‘WILD WATCH Project’ will allow Xplore! Science Discovery Centre to work with learners in years 5 and 6. The project will facilitate discussions around climate change, carbon emissions and look at the impact it has had on our local biodiversity. ‘Wild watch’ will further look at other impacts on biodiversity as well as, why it’s important, and how understanding biodiversity can help to mitigate climate change.

The project aims to ensure young people will have a better understanding of how they can play a part in its protection by making changes that support and enhance the natural environment and wildlife. The project aims to create a generation of young people who are better connected with nature and feel the health and well-being benefits associated with actively enjoying and supporting nature in a changing climate.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

Groundwork North Wales – Greener Communities (Youth Project)

Groundwork North Wales will look to support urban communities to conserve, regenerate and build pride in their local natural environments.

The Greener Communities project is a volunteer focussed programme of engagement enabling people to connect with their local green spaces supporting the development of confidence, self-esteem, well-being, and reconnection with the green spaces in participant’s local areas.

14-18 year olds in education will get the opportunity to attend structured sessions that educate on environmental impacts and improvements to the biodiversity of their local areas.

18-24 year olds will have the opportunity to take part in an eight-week programme to gain skills that will support their personal development. They will plan and deliver community improvements whilst learning about climate change mitigation and the environmental impacts the green spaces will offer to their communities.

Cllr David A Bithell, Climate Champion, said: “We’re delighted to be a part of this partnership with Xplore! and Groundwork North Wales which will allow so many young people an opportunity to learn about the harmful impacts of climate change and carbon emissions on the natural environment. We want to thank Natural Resources Wales’ Resilient Communities Fund for supporting this important work in our community.”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “There are so many benefits to having pride in your environment. What is particularly important is how the WILD WATCH Project and the Greener Communities Youth Project will support the health and wellbeing of the young people taking part, promoting confidence and self-esteem, as well as building strong communities.”

Karen Balmer, Groundwork North Wales CEO, said “It is great that we are able to provide this opportunity for our future generations to learn about climate change mitigation and the environmental impacts on green spaces. These sessions will not only benefit the individuals and their futures but the communities they live in too.”

Don’t Blow Christmas – Counterfeit Electrical Goods Campaign Launched

We’re supporting the “Don’t Blow Christmas” campaign  to raise awareness of the dangers of buying counterfeit electrical products online in the run-up to Christmas.

Don’t Blow Christmas urges people to recognise and choose authentic electrical goods from legitimate retailers in a bid to reduce the risk of faulty and hazardous goods ruining Christmas for families.

There are good reasons for the campaign as counterfeit electrical goods are often found to be unsafe and 98% fail safety tests.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

Home Office data shows that 10 UK house fires each day are caused by faulty appliances and leads.

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, said “Don’t buy electrical goods through adverts on social media, or unknown on-line suppliers just because the price is low. At best you will be buying poor quality products that don’t last. At worst you could be risking lives.”

“It’s important that customers understand that whilst they may think they are saving money, they often need to buy the product again much quicker so the message ‘Buy cheap, buy twice’ very true in many cases.”

  • Welcome news as ORR approved 30 minute service on Wrexham to Bidston Line

Welcome news as ORR approved 30 minute service on Wrexham to Bidston Line

Service improvements to the Wrexham and Bidston line will be felt by both Transport for Wales and GB Railfreight, the Office of Rail and Road has announced.

An independent review was needed because both operators had applied for capacity that could not be accommodated together.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

Currently, an hourly Wrexham to Bidston service is operated by Transport for Wales, whilst GBRf use sections of track to serve Deeside and Avonmouth from Padeswood Cement Works.

Freight trains also serve Padeswood Cement Works and can now continue with better certainty thanks to a firm contractual base. Each freight train will remove around 36 HGVs from the roads.

Councillor David A Bithell deputy leader with responsibility for strategic transport said, “I welcome this news that the ORR has agreed to allow two trains an hour on the Wrexham to Bidston line.

“This has long been an objective of Wrexham Council for a 30 minute service and supports our decarbonisation agenda. I will be pressing transport for wales for a start date.”

Stephanie Tobyn, Director of Strategy, Policy and Reform at ORR said: “We are pleased to have reached a decision that promotes passenger and freight growth in line with our duties through an increase in passenger services and placing the freight trains serving the cement works on a firm contractual basis.

“Our review of the applications identified areas where Network Rail needs to improve its management of granting access to the rail network. We will continue to monitor the Wales and Borders route on these issues.”

  • Renting your home? A good EPC could help keep your fuel bills down

Renting your home? A good EPC could help keep your fuel bills down

If you rent your home – or you’re considering renting – ask the landlord to show you the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for the property.

An EPC will tell you how energy efficient the building is, and could give you an idea of what the heating costs will be.

By law, most properties in Wales need an EPC before they can be rented out.

The only exceptions are bedsits or room-lets with a shared kitchen, toilet or bathroom, and rooms in halls of residence or hostels.

EPC ratings range from ‘A’ to ‘G’ – with ‘A’ being the best rating, and ‘G’ being the worst.

Are you the victim of a loan shark? Call 0300 123 311.

Could you apply for a grant?

Councillor David A Bithell is Wrexham Council’s lead member for housing, and chair of a cross-party working group set up to support people through the cost of living crisis.

He says: “If you’re renting or considering renting, it’s worth asking the landlord for a copy of the EPC.

“Rising fuel costs are making it more expensive to heat a home, but living in a property that’s energy efficient could help keep your fuel bills down.

“Unless the property is exempt, a rented property should have a minimum rating of ‘E.’ Any less and your landlord could be breaking the law.

“As a tenant, you might be able to improve the building by applying for an energy efficiency grant, or by encouraging your landlord to apply.

“Have a chat and see if you can work together.”

You can find out more about EPCs and energy efficiency grants on Wrexham Council’s website.

  • Funding secured for solar panels on leisure centres in Wrexham

Funding secured for solar panels on leisure centres in Wrexham

As part of our work to decarbonise our buildings and reach the net zero by 2030 targets for the public sector, important funding has been secured to install solar PV panels on leisure centres in Wrexham.

We have been awarded £180,000 by Welsh Government’s Assets Collaboration Fund and working in partnership with Freedom Leisure, we can now make some of the necessary advances in our plans for the decarbonisation of public buildings. Added to this is £128,232 of funding that Freedom Leisure has recently been awarded by the Sport Wales Capital Fund.

Cllr David A Bithell, Climate Champion, said: “The solar PV installation is an innovative approach, which allows us to become more self-sufficient and substantially reduces the current energy being used from the grid, leading to a reduction in greenhouse gases and carbon savings.

“It also enables the generation of clean and sustainable local energy for use by the centres, which will act as a visible example of change that can be followed by other organisations and communities in Wrexham.”

Cllr Beverley Parry-Jones, Lead Member with responsibility for Leisure, said: “We want to lead by example with the things we are doing in response to the climate emergency, so we are delighted that we will be able to have solar PV panels on our leisure centres in Wrexham. They will be a very welcome addition which will help us to reduce our environmental impact considerably.”

Richard Milne, Area Manager for North Wales at Freedom Leisure, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside Wrexham Council on this essential energy saving project. Just like the council, we are committed to our Net Zero targets and to reducing the environmental impact of operating leisure centres.

“Renewable energy such as solar PV, is a key component to achieving this target and by working alongside our local authority partners, as well as our colleagues and customers to reduce energy use, we will all be playing our part in tackling the global crisis.”

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

    Low Carbon Heating Design Funding

We have also been awarded a £30,000 Low Carbon Heating Development Grant by Welsh Government’s Energy Service which will ensure that the £34,000 identified by WCBC will be able to deliver better value for money.

The funding will go towards developing comprehensive and appropriate designs for improvements to the heating systems at five sites requiring an upgrade. These sites were selected for the development work on the basis of their current high carbon emissions fuel type, levels of energy use and low DEC/EPC ratings.

The five sites, which will have low carbon heating systems designed are:

    • Abbey Road Transport Depot
    • Eyton Primary School
    • Froncysyllte CP
    • Minera Primary School
    • Ysgol Cynddelw

The designs will ensure we are able to access further funding to implement the improved heating systems in the future.

  • Active Wrexham Primary Schools Football Tournaments

Active Wrexham Primary Schools Football Tournaments

During the autumn term, girls and mixed primary school football tournaments organised by Active Wrexham staff took place at Cefn Druids AFC, coinciding with the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

Earlier this month 24 schools teams took part in a girls only tournament. After group games then further knockout rounds, the eventual winners were Acton Park CP beating Plas Coch on penalties in an extremely close final.

Acton will now go on to represent Wrexham at the National Primary 5’s tournament at Newtown AFC in May 2023.

Later in the month 32 teams took part in a mixed. With the amount of teams who entered, it was decided to just hold group games on one day with a World Cup style event. The format was four groups with eight teams in each.

The bottom four teams in each group qualified to take part in the ‘Euros’ event which takes place on 7 March. The top four teams in each group qualified to take part in the further ‘World Cup’ event on 14 March where the overall winners will be decided. The winning team will also go on to represent Wrexham at the Primary 5’s tournament in May.

All schools who entered were invited to take part in a World Cup celebration competition. Schools were encouraged to make banners, flags, shirts or similar and to be as creative as possible with their creations.

There were some fantastic entries, with Barkers Lane winning the girls competition and Wat’s Dyke winning the boys competition.

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, said “It is so pleasing that so many of our junior footie team players enjoyed themselves, with well over 400 pupils taking part across both tournaments, which goes to show the strength of junior football in Wrexham.

“A big thank is owed to the Active Wrexham officers for staging these fun tournaments and I wish Acton Park CP girls team all the best when playing in the National Primary’s 5’s tournament next year.”

We look forward to the further mixed events tournaments in March.

  • Recycling and Christmas

    Recycling and Christmas

With Christmas fast approaching you’ll likely be stocking up on the all usual items, such as wrapping paper, gifts and festive cards to bring some cheer to family and friends.

When you’re buying stuff for Christmas, please try to consider whether or not these things are recyclable, and always look to choose materials that can be recycled wherever possible.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “Knowing which materials can be recycled is really helpful when you’re planning ahead for Christmas. Wrapping paper is always a good example to use, because some people just assume all wrapping paper is recyclable, but this isn’t true.

“In most cases recyclable versions will be available, it’s just important to be know which ones are recyclable so that you can make informed choices when buying any of these items. Christmas is a period where we see more of these materials than we typically would at other times of the year, and we want to make sure we recycle as many of them as we can.”

    Which materials can I recycle?

Don’t stress – we’re going to run through a variety of common Xmas items to give you all the information you’ll need around which ones can or can’t be recycled. By the end, you’ll have everything you’ll need to make informed recycling choices.

So, lets kick off with wrapping paper…

    Wrapping paper

As Cllr Jones touched upon, not all types of wrapping papers are recyclable. The shiny foil wrapping is non-recyclable, so please stay away from this. Wrapping with glitter is also non-recyclable.

Most other shiny wrapping papers are laminated, making them non-recyclable too. You also need to look out if the paper has any plastic add-ons and avoid these.

The good news is all other wrapping papers should be fine to recycle. If you stay away from foils, glitters, laminated paper and any plastic add-ons, you should be able to recycle all your wrapping paper when you’ve finished with it…just make sure to remove any sticky tape beforehand 🙂

Tip: Christmas cards (without glitter and any bows removed) as well as envelopes can be recycled in your blue bag/top wheelie box. Paper and card gift bags can be recycled here too – just remember to remove any non-recyclable handles.

    Cardboard

There’s always plenty of cardboard boxes involved at Christmas and it’s important to recycle these. Just make sure to remove any tape, staples, bubble wrap, plastic film etc before recycling your boxes.

Unfortunately, some of us aren’t doing this…we’re just taking our item from the box and not thinking about what other materials might be left behind.

Plus, if you flatten your boxes before recycling them in your blue bag/top wheelie bin, it’ll leave much more room for the rest of your cardboard and papers

If you have extra cardboard to recycle: We will collect clean, flattened cardboard left by recycling containers as long as it is no larger in height or width than a standard issue blue sack.

Tip: Please remove any additional wrapping, such as polystyrene or films, from cardboard boxes before recycling them.

We’re unable to collect any extra bags of general rubbish left at the side of your black/blue rubbish bin. This waste will need to be put in your rubbish bin ready for your next scheduled collection or taken to one of our recycling centres.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

    Reusing items

Decorative bows and ribbons are non-recyclable, so if you use any of these please consider storing them away and reusing them the following year.

If someone surprises you with a new TV or Blu-ray player, please think about what to do with your older models. The Nightingale House reuse shop in Bryn Lane recycling centre would be happy to take them off your hands.

You can also donate any unwanted Christmas gifts to the reuse shop. We’re sure they’d be very grateful.

    Bottles and cans

You’ll probably have more glass bottles, plastic bottles and aluminium cans than usual at Christmas but please remember to recycle them the same as you would for the rest of the year.

If your recycling boxes get full, you can leave any extra recyclables in solid containers next to your other recycling on your collection day and we’ll recycle the materials (leaving the containers behind for you to reuse again).

But if you do have extra recycling, please separate the materials as you usually would…for example, if you have extra plastic bottles and glass, please put the plastic in one container and the glass in a separate container.

Tip: Large sweet tins can be recycled alongside your cans and plastics in your wheelie box/recycling boxes.

    Food waste

Christmas also means lots of turkey bones and leftovers that can be recycled in your food caddy, so don’t neglect food recycling.

For a reminder on what foods are recyclable, please take a look at this.

Don’t forget, if you’re running low on caddy liners, just tie an empty liner to your caddy handle on your collection day and we’ll leave you a new roll, free of charge. Simple!

Or if it’s easier, you can grab some of our free caddy liners from one of the many locations that stock them for us in Wrexham – there’s now over 40 venues that do so! Take a look at the full list here…

Tip: You can take real Christmas trees to be recycled at our recycling centres, if they won’t fit in your green bin.

    Household recycling centres

You can take many other items to one of our recycling centres to be recycled. Take a look at this list of materials we can recycle at our recycling centres.

Thanks for taking the time to read this blog, and as always thanks for recycling 🙂
