  • Wales Climate Week 2022 – climate change impacts everyone

Wales Climate Week 2022 – climate change impacts everyone

Wales Climate Week takes place November 21-25 and it offers us an opportunity to hold a national conversation on climate change.

The week explores the action needed to reduce carbon emissions and create greater resilience to the impacts of climate change we’re already experiencing across Wales.

In particular, this year’s theme focuses on the important contribution that the general public can make in helping to tackle climate change.

You can visit the Wales Climate Week website to learn more, and you can also follow #WalesClimateWeek2022 to stay up to date throughout the week.

    “Please add your support”

Cllr David A Bithell, Climate Champion, said: “Climate change is not a problem for the future, it’s a very urgent problem that needs addressing quickly. It can be easy to think ‘I’m already doing enough’, or that responsibility lies elsewhere, but it’s clear that it’s going to take a big effort from all of us, so please add your support to the campaign. At Wrexham Council, we’re continuing to make good progress with our Decarbonisation Plan, where we’re working towards achieving carbon zero by 2030.”

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

Have you completed our climate change survey? Time’s running out…

There’s not too much longer left for you to complete our climate change and decarbonisation survey!

The survey will be live until November 30 and only takes around 5-10 minutes to complete, and there are some great energy saving prizes up for grabs.

People who complete the survey and leave their email address will be entered into a draw, giving them the chance to win one of the following:

    • bike vouchers
    • slow cookers
    • air fryers
    • mobile phone solar chargers
    • annual pass to Xplore!

We’re asking as many residents as possible to take part, so please share with family and friends as well.

    TAKE OUR SURVEY

Our climate change survey is now open, with some great prizes to be won!

    Welsh Government consultation is open

Welsh Government has an open consultation asking for your views on its draft strategy for engaging the general public in action on climate change.

If you want to take part, you will need to respond before it closes on December 14.

You may need to refer to the consultation documents as you answer the questions (these are available to download on the Welsh Government website).

You don’t have to answer all of the questions if you don’t want to, and you can save the form to complete later by providing an email address.

    RESPOND TO CONSULTATION

When it comes to the cost of living, making sure you claim all the help and support you’re entitled to could make a huge difference.

Need a new bin or recycling box? Ordering one is easy

If you need a new or replacement bin or recycling box, ordering one is perhaps much easier than you think.

We have a very short form we need you to complete for us. It only takes a minute-or-two – just pop in the details and we can start preparing for the replacement to be sent out.

If you’re reporting a faulty bin, we may be able to attempt a repair on your next collection day, depending on the type of damage.

If your bin has been lost or stolen, or if you need to order a new one for your property, you can follow the instructions to make your payment (a general waste bin costs £59, a garden waste bin costs £17).

    ORDER A BIN

Replacement recycling boxes (black box, green box, kerbside food caddy, kitchen food caddy, blue bag) can be ordered free of charge. Just fill in the details and we’ll process your order.

    ORDER A RECYCLING BOX

We’ll get the replacement out to you as quick as we can, but how long this takes can vary. The current estimated waiting time for deliveries is around 1-2 weeks. Should your order need to go on hold while we gather more stock, you’ll get an email from us.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

  • Wrexham Taxi driver Prosecuted for Refusing to Transport Assistance Dog

Wrexham Taxi driver Prosecuted for Refusing to Transport Assistance Dog

A Wrexham taxi driver has been prosecuted after he refused to transport two blind customers as they were accompanied by an assistance dog.

Mr Ali Raza Kiani, of Pendinas, Wrexham, was prosecuted was fined £200 and ordered to pay £1080 costs for the offence, which occurred late at night in January 2022.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

Wrexham Magistrates Court heard that the customers had booked the vehicle to get home from Wrexham. When Mr Kiani arrived at the pick-up destination he refused to allow the dog into the vehicle on the grounds “that the vehicle has leather seats”.

The customers were fully aware of their rights under equality legislation and informed the driver that he would be committing an offence if he refused to transport the dog. They informed him that they would keep the dog off the seats. Mr Kiani called his operator, Speedy Cars to send another vehicle, however, he then drove off and left the customers.

When interviewed by Council Licensing Officers, Mr Kiani claimed that he did not know that the dog was a guide dog. The court heard that the dog was wearing its high visibility harness and reflective ‘guide dog’ identification badge at the time of the incident.

The court also heard witness testimonies from the customers who attended Court with the dog. The legislation allows drivers with a pre-approved “medical exemption certificate” to refuse to carry dogs, if it impairs their health, however Mr Kiani did not have any medical exemption.

He was found guilty of the offence of refusing to transport a customer with a guide dog, contrary to the Equality Act 2010.

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Planning and Public Protection, said “Taxi and Private Hire Operators have clear responsibilities under the Equality Act, which protects the right of people with disabilities.  It is completely unacceptable for a driver to refuse to transport a passenger with an assistance dog.

This year, we’re celebrating World Children’s Day by holding a free event in Tŷ Pawb on Thursday 17 November 2022 to celebrate children’s rights and their place in society.

It is aimed at children, young people and families and will be open from 4.30pm until 7pm.

Everything in this event will be free with free food (subject to availability), information market stalls and entertainment including treasure hunt, circus skills, sports, photo booth, glitter faces, live bug display, live music and performances, play activities and much, much more.

Going Blue for World Children’s Day

We are asking everyone to wear something blue (the internationally recognised colour of World Children’s Day) on the day to help bring attention to the importance of children’s rights.

We’ll also be turning Tŷ Pawb building blue to mark and celebrate World Children’s Day.

Every school in Wrexham has been invited and staff and pupils are asked to wear something blue.

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide and improving children’s welfare.

November 20 is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Since 1990, World Children’s Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on children’s rights.
