Consultation to start on school expansion plans

    We’ve got some good news.

Today, our Executive Board approved plans to consult on increasing places at Barker’s Lane CP School.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

The proposals look to increase capacity from the school up from the current 210 with 30 pupils in nursery, to 315 pupils and a 45 pupil nursery.

As well as reducing infant class sizes at Barker’s Lane CP, it would also help to relieve the pressure on a spaces at a number of our town-centre based English-medium primary schools.

The consultation will run from October 11 until December 12 – and we’ll have more details in place on how to respond and put your views forward once the consultation officially starts.

Town Centre Works Continue as area closes to traffic

As the town centre improvements continue there’s a need to close the area to vehicles from September 10.

Deliveries to commercial properties will be able to take place through planned arrangements between the shops and the contractors.

Pedestrian access to all shops will be maintained at all times.

Visitors to the area will have seen that quite a lot going on to improve the town centre and these improvements are just the first stage of a £420,000 investment to improve paving and street furniture in the heart of the town.

The North Wales Safeguarding Board is in the running for a prestigious social care accolade.

The Accolade awards, being arranged by Social Care Wales, recognise outstanding work going on in social care and childcare in Wales and is an opportunity to highlight best practice for sharing within the industry. The Accolades are open to teams and organisations from the public, voluntary and independent sectors. This has been developed to prevent the serious injury or even death of people who appear to be self-neglecting, supporting their right to be treated with respect and dignity and “aiding recognition of situations of self-neglect”.

Is this country park one of our best kept secrets?

The next time you’re in the Chirk area, there’s a bit of a hidden gem you should visit that you probably don’t know about…

Brynkinalt Country Park is a large open space on the outskirts of Chirk with magnificent views over Chirk towards the Berwyn hills and Shropshire.

If you visit, you’ll be treated to a network of paths guiding you through the landscape and an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife (including some very pretty blue butterflies this time of year).

The park also contains mining artefacts – a coal wagon and cutting disc to celebrate the park’s industrial heritage.

It’s a nice, quirky place to visit, so go and have a look for yourself…there’s a car parking area off Middleton Terrace at the lower entrance to the park, and a smaller area at the top of Chirk Green Road.

  • Keep your doors closed to rogue traders

Keep your doors closed to rogue traders

Rogue traders are a blight on any community, and can pose an especial danger to isolated, elderly and vulnerable people.

We’ve recently had a few instances of cold callers pretending to be from the council in order to access people’s homes, and persuade them into paying them for services they don’t need.

    It’s not us!

We want to assure you – it’s not us.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

Council staff will always get in touch with residents in advance before visiting. And if you do have one of our staff at your door, you’re always welcome to ask for identification and get in touch with the council to verify they are who they say they are.

Genuine callers won’t be offended and will be happy to either wait until you check, or call back another time.

But rogue traders are a lot more insistent, and will rarely take no for an answer.

What starts out as a seemingly innocent and harmless cold call can often lead to much more aggressive or demanding behaviour from fraudsters, who will often force people to pay money for services they don’t need – usually at wildly exaggerated costs.

Rogue traders will seem polite to start…

To start with, rogue traders will usually seem very polite, friendly and helpful.

But further down the line, they turn to intimidation to then demand large sums of cash.  They will even escort people to their bank to take out money, and sadly we often see repeat instances of this kind of victimisation, with criminals targeting vulnerable people as a source of money.

The affect that this type of crime can have on people’s mental health is significant, leading to increased feelings of insecurity, isolation, embarrassment and vulnerability.

No one should be made to feel vulnerable within their own homes.

Get in touch with Trading Standards

If anyone encounters such doorstep sellers at their home, they are within their rights to turn down any such offers of work – no matter how polite the seller may seem.

If the sellers become insistent, suspicious or aggressive, members of the public can contact Wrexham Council’s Trading Standards service on 01978 298997 or North Wales Police on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.

  • Did you miss this? New figures show tourism worth £118m per year to Wrexham economy

Did you miss this? New figures show tourism worth £118m per year to Wrexham economy

In case you missed it earlier this week…

The latest tourism performance data has revealed further good news for the tourism sector in Wrexham County Borough with a growth of nearly 2% in the last year 🙂

Data submitted by local tourism operators in Wrexham County Borough has shown an encouraging 1.7% growth in visitor spend in the last year, with a total of £117.7m being brought into the county in 2017. However, since 2010, this also shows a growth of almost 40%, making the county one of the strongest performers in Wales.

Local tourism is fronted by Wrexham Council working alongside the This Is Wrexham Partnership – a collective board of local hotels, attractions and event providers all with the common aim of increasing the visitor experience and promotion of the county.

    Popular tourism focussed-events

Figures for 2017, badged as the Year of Legends in Wales, saw popular tourism focussed-events such as FOCUS Wales, ComicCon, the Drive-In Cinemas, Rock the Park, Underneath the Arches, the Oli Murs gig at the Racecourse Ground and the popular Christmas programme in town.

In addition, investment in the sector by the This Is Wrexham Partnership and the subsequent launch of their tourism card and marketing programme is believed to have helped these figures.

The local area has also developed a strong reputation for good quality food and drink, with independent restaurants such as the Hand at Llanarmon and the Machine House featuring in the UK Michelin guide, and breweries such as Wrexham Lager and the Big Hand continuing to promote the area’s name far and wide.

Comparing the data regionally, North Wales as a whole saw a growth of 4.7% reflecting the popularity of the whole region as a leading staycation destination within the UK.

KIDS IN SCHOOL? FIND OUT IF YOU CAN APPLY FOR HELP TOWARDS SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS AND MORE…

    Visitor numbers

As well as spend, visitor-numbers shot up in the county borough, with a 3% growth in day visitors with 1.48m visiting local attractions and events, and 1.89m visitors overall.

Despite this growth, overnight stays dropped slightly by -0.3%, perhaps unsurprising as 2016 witnessed the peak construction period for HMP Berwyn which swelled midweek overnight bookings for hotels from construction workers.

Speaking about the positive annual results, lead member for the economy at Wrexham Council, Councillor Terry Evans, said: “These latest results are further good news for the tourism sector in Wrexham County Borough. I have seen myself how the town and the county has benefitted from the growth in visitor numbers in recent years, and I hope that these positive statistics encourage further investment and growth in the sector going forward.

“It’s also encouraging in particular to see a growth in our events programme which we have worked hard to promote. Both of these generally bring more income for our local businesses here in the county, and I can only see figures for 2018 growing again.”

    “Wrexham keeps raising its game”

These comments were echoed by the new chair of the This Is Wrexham Tourism Partnership, Sam Regan from the Lemon Tree Restaurant in town. Sam concluded: “Each year, Wrexham County keeps raising its game, but the collective ‘togetherness’ of tourism businesses within the area is so encouraging.

“Year on year the data gathered from local operators and national surveys justifies Wrexham’s growth as a tourism destination and more visitors continue to choose this area as either a base to explore North Wales from – or for days out at our local attractions or events.

“In this last year, the Tourism Partnership and the tourism team at Wrexham County Borough Council have collaborated on a number of initiatives and events – all of which have aimed to keep us competitive and attractive to visitors.

“This summer, we also re-launched our tourism card which aims to firstly continue the marketing support for hotels, restaurants and attractions and generate funding to put back into other funding bids, marketing, business support and visitor events.”

    Encouraging new investment

Commenting further on the latest figures, generated by Global Tourism Solutions and used by the majority of Local Authorities in the UK, Destination Manager at Wrexham County Borough Council Joe Bickerton said: “It’s once again really encouraging to see a further growth in visitor-spend here in Wrexham County. Each year, we try and encourage and support new investment in the sector, along with events which have the potential to attract new visitors into the area.

“Once visitors arrive, many comment about either how attractive, welcoming or accessible Wrexham County is – so our aim in the local authority is to use what finance we can access to keep enhancing these first impressions and visitor-welcome in line with our new Destination Action Plan.”

    Employment continues to grow

Employment within the tourism sector also continues to grow, with Wrexham supporting 1,640 full-time hospitality jobs.

One of the recent successes has been that graduates from the Tourism & Events degree course at Glyndwr University are finding skilled jobs locally.

Recent graduate Francesca Mairs finished the course in 2017 and has since started work as wedding & events coordinator at Llyndir Hall Hotel in Rossett.

Francesca added: “Studying tourism at Glyndwr University allowed me to develop a greater insight into the career paths within this area, and we were constantly offered opportunities to network with local businesses and explore the potential of the area with the tourism staff at Wrexham Council.

“It was one of these links that gave me the confidence to choose a career within the local hospitality scene and I meet visitors each week who love what we have to offer.”

Early indications for 2018 are that tourism performance in both Wrexham County and across North Wales will continue to develop following a record summer for weather and positive feedback from attractions and hotels.

Want to make a positive difference to people’s lives? Take a look at these jobs…

Have you ever wanted a really rewarding job, where your work positively impacts on people in your community?

If so, this could be right up your street…as we have a number of positions for permanent and relief support workers.

But to do this job well, you’ll need bags of enthusiasm, bundles of passion and energy along with a real commitment to your work…

    Does this sound like you?

Our support workers help people live as independently as possible in their own home.

They’re kind and caring, and provide support to people with learning, sensory and physical disabilities. And the bottom line is that they make a massive difference to a lot of lives.

    It’s a really important job.

If you’re a caring person who could thrive with this responsibility, please read on…

But I’ve never done this type of work before?

Doesn’t matter! We have excellent training in place to get you up to speed. It’s more about you as an individual and your character.

You’ll need a Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2 (or equivalent), so if you haven’t already got this, you’ll need to study for one within an agreed timescale if your application is successful.

Also, good communication skills are a must!

There’s great development opportunities and you’ll have support from dedicated managers.

To give you an even better look at what being a support worker entails, here is a bit of advice from one of our staff…

    Why I became a support worker…

“Before this role I worked at a supermarket for seven years alongside my studies. After graduation, like many people, I was confused to exactly what I wanted to do.

“Initially of course it’s financial reasons that brought me to job hunting – but support work is different in the way that the job is in fact another person’s life. This quickly changed my perspective of ‘work’ – where it’s not actually about ‘me’ anymore.

“The best thing about it is that all the talents/hobbies/skills that I had built can be used creatively within support working. I have had a huge amount of support from my manager and have been able to set up a music group for adults with learning disabilities – an opportunity for people to join a band or just have a go on different instruments.

“It’s this ability to bring in my own hobbies and things that I am passionate about and seeing others benefiting from it that results in job satisfaction like I have never experienced.

“As for travelling, I‘ve had the opportunity to support a person to go on holiday – which was great fun for him and me!

“I asked to be inducted in to a few different houses which my manager helped me to do, so I have had the privilege of supporting lots of different people.

“Since starting support work I feel like a better person, the ability to support people on activities and to promote fun and excitement in another person’s day to day life is fantastic for me – it is the best job in the world.”

    Open day

There’s an open day taking place at Tŷ Pawb on September 12. So if you would like even more information, head over between 10am and 2pm and you’ll be able to meet the team.
