    Crackdown on rogue traders

We know just how much of an impact the threat posed by rogue traders can have on communities  – and especially the dangers they can pose to vulnerable or elderly individuals.

Wrexham has been targeted by rogue traders in recent months.  Working in partnership, our Trading Standards team and our North Wales Police colleagues have undertaken patrols in our rural communities to tackle doorstep crime and clamp down on rogue trading and associated criminal activity.

Officers involved in the operation recovered stolen property and assisted in the search of a wanted male, and we also gathered a lot of intelligence which will help us to prevent future doorstep crime.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

The dangers these criminals can pose to vulnerable or elderly can be alarming.

People are often caught off guard and what starts as a seemingly polite knock on the door or leaflet through the letter box often leads to a discussion over basic household work.

Rogue traders will seem polite to start…

To start with, rogue traders will usually seem very polite, friendly and helpful.

But no matter how friendly they appear, they’ll push vulnerable people into carrying out expensive work which isn’t needed, and which can quickly escalate out of control.

Further down the line, these professional, organised criminals will turn to intimidation to then demand large sums of cash.  They will even escort people to their bank to take out money, and sadly we often see instances of repeat victimisation.

The affect that this type of crime can have on people’s mental health is significant, leading to increased feelings of insecurity, isolation, embarrassment and vulnerability.

No one should be made to feel vulnerable within their own homes.

    “Very negative impact”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “Rogue traders such as doorstep criminals can have a very negative impact on our communities, and can make life especially hard for elderly or vulnerable individuals, who are often the most likely to be the victims of such crime.

“If anyone encounters such doorstep sellers at their home, they are within their rights to turn down any such offers of work – no matter how polite the seller may seem. If the sellers become insistent, suspicious or aggressive, members of the public can contact Wrexham Council’s Trading Standards service on 01978 298997 or North Wales Police on 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.

“If homeowners feel that work could be done on their home, they are advised to get in touch with a reputable trader, rather than dealing with unsolicited doorstep sellers.”

Our Trading Standards team and North Wales Police will continue to work together to tackle this crime, and work to protect and safeguard our communities.

“Congratulations to all those sites taking the Green Flag Community Award as well – it’s an excellent commendation.

“I am particularly pleased that Wrexham Cemetery has gained its first Green Flag Award, a real achievement by the staff and Friends Group for the cemetery.”

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Awards in Wales. The 201 flags flying are a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of the staff and volunteers across the country who work tirelessly to maintain Green Flag Award standards.

  • Old oil? We’ll have that!

    Old oil? We’ll have that!

Getting rid of used cooking oil isn’t the easiest of kitchen jobs.

It can be unpleasant and messy pouring it into another container, and it can all feel a bit like wasted effort if you just end up throwing the container away.

But – even though we all do! – we can’t just pour it down the drains, because that runs the risk of clogging pipes or creating massive fatbergs, which are difficult to shift and can cause huge problems for waste and water companies as they try to keep the pipes and sewers flowing.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

Luckily, we’ve now got a solution which’ll help spare the drains – and even put the used oils to some very nifty new uses…

    New oil containers

We’ve recently installed cooking oil containers at our Household Recycling Centres at Plas Madoc, the Lodge, Brymbo, and Bryn Lane on the Wrexham Industrial Estate.

If you’re keen to get rid of old cooking oil, just ask one of our on-site workers to unlock the oil container for you.

Pour in what you want to get rid of, and we’ll do the rest.

    Old oil – new fuel

We recover the waste oil through a natural process of filtration and sedimentation.

It sounds a bit hi-tech, but basically, we wait for the heavier oil to sort itself out from the lighter oil.

The oil from all the containers is left to settle in big tanks for two to five weeks, allowing the process mentioned above to take place.

Once complete, the heavy sediment is removed from the tanks and lighter, purer oil is filtered to turn it into a very useful, environmentally-friendly bioliquid called LF100.

And LF100 can then be used in eco-friendly power stations to generate renewable energy, which is then used to power homes and businesses across the UK.

Not a bad way to get rid of some old bacon fat!

And, better yet, it’ll keep the lights on and help keep the pipes working.

    “Win-win situation”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “I’m very glad to see these new oil containers installed at our Household Recycling Centres, operated by FCC Environment.

“We want to encourage householders to recycle whatever they can, and to make that as easy as possible.

“Given the fact that the oil used goes into generating green energy, it’s very much win-win, so we hope people take up the opportunity as soon as possible.”

The Governance Agreement and the North Wales Growth Bid was approved and will now go to full Council on Thursday for their approval.

Members also received an update to the council’s rolling five-year Capital Programme which details the capital schemes in the County Borough.

Last financial year, the total capital expenditure was £67m with around £49m of that going towards improving housing. It is planned to spend around £71m overall this year, with £50m earmarked for housing.

There will also be an increase in funding for disabled facilities grants of £1.3m and for improving the efficiency of our streetlighting.

There are also improvements and refurbishments to our schools, bridges and roads. The list is too long to list here so you may like to take a look for yourself here.

Other reports included the Treasury Management and Quarter 4 Performance report; and the Updated Local Planning Guidance Note on parking, which was adopted and now provides better guidance to planning applicants, developers and architects on maximum parking standards that will apply to proposals for Houses in Multiple Occupation.

The Executive Board meets monthly and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

Could you make a difference to enjoying the countryside?

Did you know that there is now a Flintshire and Wrexham Local Access Forum?

The two areas have recently joined forces and their aim is to improve public access to land in the areas by offering advice to both Wrexham and Flintshire councils. Their advice could include how to improve access to the countryside to ensure as many people as possible can take advantage of what the areas have to offer. This could include improvements to the public rights of way and the right to cross open country and registered common land.
