WW1 Commemorative Weekend – Plans revealed

Many of you have been asking what we’re planning to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the end of the First World War on November 11 2018.

It may be a few months away yet but we can assure that there are events planned most notable the Annual Service of Remembrance at the RWF Memorial on Bodhyfryd on Sunday November 11am – exactly 100 years after the guns fell silent and the armistice was signed at Compiégne in Northern France.

This service is held every year and is always very well attended but this year’s remembrance is expected to attract many more. If you are attending you are asked to be on Bodhyfryd for 10.45am. There will be road closures so if you want to use the library or Waterworld car parks please make sure you arrive in plenty of time to park.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

That’s not the only event that we’ve got planned though, the weekend will begin on Saturday November 10 with a WW1 Mobile Trench and Bi-plane on Queen’s Square.

The trench made from wood, corrugated iron and other materials provides a fascinating insight into life on the Western Front during WW1. It comes complete with equipment, weapons, tools, food and other items that were used by soldiers during the war. This will be a poignant experience for the whole family to experience.

The bi-plane is a replica of a Bristol Scout which was one of the first planes to take to the skies during those early days of aviation. It was also one of the first single-seater aircraft to be used as a fighter aircraft.

There’s will be a WW1 Tea Dance at Tŷ Pawb with live music that will take you back in time. There’ll also be freshly baked scones with jam and whipped cream, traditional welsh cakes and bara brith and butter.

The Saturday will end when St Giles tower becomes the focus of attention for the lighting of one of over 1,000 beacons lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas.

Timings and further details will be available soon and we’ll keep you informed of these and any other commemorative events that are planned.

  • Good news for kids … and parents … as holidays are here!

Good news for kids … and parents … as holidays are here!

As the summer holidays approach there’s lots planned for young people to keep them busy.

Firstly there’s the fantastic playwork provision that puts children’s right to play in the community at the very top of their agenda. They are available across the county and are staffed by trained playworkers. The sessions are free and are aimed at letting children feel confident about playing in their communities where they live and where they can sometimes face barriers to playing outside.

Take a look at the video at the top of this page to find just what they can get up to. The only guarantee is that they’ll have fun and probably get a bit mucky!

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

You can find out more about the play provision here

Details of where the play provision will be throughout the holidays is available here

In addition to the playwork provision you can always keep up to date with what’s going on by following our social media pages:

    twitter.com/wrexhamcbc
    facebook.com/wrexhamcouncil

Or get your free copy of the summer Hholiday events guide which gives details of what’s going on in our country parks, libraries, museum, Tŷ Pawb and other providers by emailing fis@wrexham.gov.uk

Free swimming will also be taking place in Freedom Leisure Centres and you can find out the details here

“Be prepared to get wet and messy”

And don’t forget Play Day, the day when children take over the town centre and have a brilliant time just playing. Organised by our Play Team we’re always more than happy to turn the town centre over to them so the more the merrier – be prepared to get wet and messy though and old clothes and perhaps even a change of clothes will be needed.

Enjoy the holidays and please keep an eye on what’s going on – lots of events are for free but if not they’re usually pretty reasonable and you just pay for materials.

Plas Pentwyn achieves coveted Green Flag Community Award

Keep Wales Tidy has unveiled this year’s Green Flag Award winners – the international mark of a quality park or green space.

In total, 112 community managed green spaces in Wales have met the high standard needed to receive the prestigious Green Flag Community Award (101 in 2017/18). These sites rely on volunteers to maintain their excellent facilities.

The flag will be flying at Plas Pentwyn Community Resource Centre in recognition of its excellent facilities and commitment to delivering great quality green space.

    “Absolutely thrilled”

Lead volunteer Moira Taylor said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be awarded the green flag for the third year running. Many thanks to the children of Penygelli Primary School who come every week to help in the community garden. Thanks also to the whole community of Coedpoeth for their donations and for supporting our plant sales which helps fund the project.”

Plas Pentwyn Community GardenLocal Member, Cllr Krista Childs said: “The volunteers at Plas Pentwyn work so hard and really deserve this award. The community gardens are a wonderful space, congratulations to all involved.”

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government. It is judged by green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, environmental management and community involvement.

“Dedication and enthusiasm of local volunteers”

Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Awards in Wales. All the flags flying at community sites are a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of local volunteers who work tirelessly to raise the standard of our green spaces.

“I’d encourage everyone to get outdoors this summer and enjoy the fantastic facilities we have on our doorstep.”

The other sites in the county borough, which took the coveted Community Green Flag Award, which awards public spaces maintained by organisations such as churches, schools, community groups and others, are:
    • Maes y Pant, Marford Quarry
    • St Mary’s Churchyard, Chirk

A full list of award winners can be found on the Keep Wales Tidy website.

You can put your park or green space on the map by getting involved too. Visit the Keep Wales Tidy website for more information.

“…a potential game-changer for Wrexham” – council welcomes new transport hub announcement

North East Wales is reaping the rewards of infrastructure investment and high quality employment as a direct result of policies at the heart of the Welsh Government’s new Economic Action Plan, Economy and Infrastructure Secretary Ken Skates will tell business leaders in Wrexham today.

Plans for a new major Transport and Business Hub for Wrexham, the establishment of a new north Wales business unit for Transport for Wales, the Business Wales Entrepreneurship Hub, and the opening of a new headquarters building for the Development Bank for Wales, are among the benefits for the region resulting from the new approaches of the Economic Action Plan.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

“Exciting opportunities for jobs and commercial growth”

Speaking ahead of a keynote speech on progress of the Economic Action Plan to a business audience at the Moneypenny offices in Wrexham, the Economy Secretary said: “Our Economic Action Plan is clear about our focus on public investment with a social purpose, about the value of a partnership approach and about our absolute commitment to developing the economic strengths of our regions.

“With that in mind I am delighted to announce the Welsh Government will be working with Transport for Wales, Wrexham Council and Glyndwr University on plans to develop a new Transport and Business Hub to totally regenerate the area around Wrexham General Station.

“Together, and under a new partnership agreement, all parties will work to develop a masterplan that enhances and integrates transport links in and around the station and opens up new and exciting opportunities for jobs and commercial growth.

“With the first meeting of the partnership set to happen in September, I hope to report progress on this exciting work very soon.

“I am also pleased to confirm that Transport for Wales will establish a North Wales business unit in Wrexham, creating 30 new jobs by the end of 2019.”

    “A potential game-changer for Wrexham”

Speaking about the plans for Wrexham General, Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, said: “This is a potential game-changer for Wrexham, and will have a massive impact on our economic future.

“Good transport links are a vital part of a healthy economy, helping businesses connect with suppliers, clients and employees, and creating more job options for people by allowing them to commute and travel to work.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the county borough, and a great example of the council, Welsh Government, Glyndwr University and other organisations working together to benefit the people of Wrexham and North Wales.”

    “Wrexham will be transformed”

Wrexham Glyndwr University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maria Hinfelaar said: “These proposals are very exciting and come at a crucial time for Wrexham. As a university, we have just unveiled our £60 million Campus 2025 strategy, which is designed to provide a fit for purpose and attractive learning environment for our students – and to provide a wider benefit for the whole area.

“It is great news for Wrexham that our proposals will dovetail with the Welsh Government’s plans for investment and infrastructure improvements set out today. We are delighted to be working with them, Wrexham Council and Transport for Wales to help drive our town, and our region, forward. In a few years’ time, Wrexham will be transformed.”

The Economy Secretary also announced that the work of the Deeside Enterprise Zone, is being extended to ensure continuity of delivery and enable a seamless transition to a broader means of supporting economic development in Flintshire and Wrexham, mirroring the merger of the two Enterprise Zones in the North West of Wales next year.

  • “Making a real difference to young people’s lives”

“Making a real difference to young people’s lives”

We all know that the lives of young people can be difficult.

And they can be all the more difficult if they’re having to deal with the problems caused by poor mental health – especially if they have to face them without the support needed.

Luckily, we’ve got teams of hard-working people in place, that have been able to support young people when they’ve needed it.

And better still, they’ve won an award for their work.

    TRAC and ADTRAC

Two local projects funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) are celebrating after winning the Regional ADTRAC 16-24 Europe Day competition.

The TRAC and ADTRAC projects support young people aged 11-24 across Wrexham and Flintshire.

Participants took part in a range of fun activities on Talacre Beach followed by lunch at Holywell Youth Centre and a visit to Flint Castle.

“Project is making a real difference”

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-poverty said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in both the TRAC and ADTRAC projects across Wrexham and Flintshire for winning the regional competition.

“The event was extremely successful and all project staff and young people should be very proud to have their efforts recognised at a regional level.

“The projects are making a real difference to young people’s lives in the area and I’d like to thank everyone involved for making the event such a huge success.”

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

For some of the young people involved it was their first experience of visiting a beach and castle and the day out gave them the opportunity to enjoy some of the local sites in North East Wales.

The event gave young people involved in the projects the opportunity to enjoy a day out and have fun whilst also accessing wellbeing support from their Youth Engagement Mentors to build up their confidence and self-esteem.

Following the day, one of the young people explained that since working with his mentor his confidence has grown enormously and he can now speak openly about how he is feeling.

    “Individual Support”

Both the TRAC and ADTRAC projects are part-funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government, offering personalised support to young people, aged 11-24, to remove barriers and help engage in either their education or to progress into work, education or training.

Find out more about the ADTRAC project here or get in touch with the ADTRAC team for Wrexham and Flintshire at ADTRAC@wrexham.gov.uk for further details regarding the referral process for organisations as well as for self-referrals.

  • Guess who’s celebrating their 5th birthday at Tŷ Pawb this week?

Guess who’s celebrating their 5th birthday at Tŷ Pawb this week?

There are always things that need addressing quickly – but sometimes we are busy planning for the future that we forget to concentrate on what is happening right now.

Originally referred to as ‘Baggy Space’, Tŷ Pawb is introducing an ongoing series of unspecified activity that is to be known as ‘Urgencies’.

This series will serve to respond to current concerns of our community, both within the users of Tŷ Pawb and further afield.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

A milestone birthday for Wrexham’s popular art space

The first in this series is dedicated to UnDegUn Art Space, to acknowledge and celebrate the crucial role that Undegun plays in Wrexham’s cultural landscape.

This July, UnDegUn will have been active for 5 years, an impressive lifespan for a ‘pop-up’ project!

Established in 2013 in a vacant sports shop on Regent Street, with the support of Leeds-based charity East Street Arts, UnDegUn offers studio spaces to many local artists as well as exhibition and performance spaces. The larger spaces regularly play host to popular local community groups such as Girls Who Make and Voicebox.

    Undegun comes to Tŷ Pawb

For their week-long residency, UnDegUn will showcase their studio members as well a number of the community groups who use their space. There will be activities taking place every day for all to get involved with.

As well as celebrating their first five years of activity, the residency serves to represent a desire from Wrexham’s arts community to be able to support each other more effectively.

Jo Marsh, Creative Director for Tŷ Pawb and Arts Lead for Wrexham County Borough Council, says: “UnDegUn is a credit to Wrexham and indicative of the rapidly developing creative community in our town. We hope that by offering the organisation and their users the platform to showcase their work will both encourage more people to visit them and more people to consider setting up their own similar projects.“

What to look out for this week

Undegun will be hosting a number of it’s regular activities at Tŷ Pawb this week, including:

    • Wednesday 6.30pm-7.30pm – ‘Girls Who Make’ – An organization & monthly event set up to support local female creatives. All types of makers welcome at this free event! Whether you are a beginner, a professional, a knitter, a baker, a painter! Come along to meet with like-minded ladies!
    • Thursday 2pm-4pm – ‘Conversation – How can we support each other?’ – An open discussion to find new ways for people of the different creative communities in Wrexham to help each other to make a successful career in the arts.
    • Friday 6pm – Voicebox at Tŷ Pawb – As UnDegUn fill  space temporarily, Voicebox look to get in on the act and add some sound to the venue –

      6.10-6.30 Nathaniel Ramsey
      6.40-7.00 Lianne Futia
      7.10-7.30 Ben Wilson

  • Town centre improvements on their way

Town centre improvements on their way

We reported last February that we had identified over £420,000 of funding to be spent on Queen Street and Hope Street to improve the areas for visitors and shoppers alike.

Now we are pleased to let you know that work will start on July 23 to replace the block paved surface – which is now 30 years old – with sandstone, porphyry rock (similar to quartz), and granite which will give a modern facelift to our main shopping street.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

“Paving, landscaping, seating and street furniture”

Dawnus Construction Holdings Ltd., will undertake the  works and are hoping to be finished within a 10 week period. The plans also include replacement of paving, landscaping, seating and street furniture.

These works follow street lighting replacement and improvements that have been completed recently.

The works will take place between Monday and Friday and you’ll be able to access all the shops during this time. There will be traffic orders for the pedestrianised area, which will be closed to all traffic between 11.30am and 5pm every working day.

Blue Badge holders and delivery vehicles will have through access outside of these hours as normal.

    “Minimise any inconvenience”

Dawnus and council staff have been liaising with shops and local businesses to miminise any inconvenience whilst the works take place.

There’s an opportunity to see for yourself what’s planned at a display at Tŷ Pawb on July 17 between 5pm and 7pm. Representatives from both Dawnus and the Council will be on hand to answer any of your questions.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment, said: “I’m very grateful to staff for their hard work in ensuring the improvements will be of the very highest quality whilst the inconvenience to town centre businesses and visitors is kept to a minimum. The extent of the works means there will inevitably be disruption but I hope everyone will continue to support the town centre whilst the works take place.”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead member for Economic Development and Regeneration said: “It’s important our town centre looks attractive for businesses and shoppers alike. These works will certainly brighten up the area and make Wrexham town centre a pleasant place to be.”

6 ways to make sure you have an epic night at Underneath the Arches

The wait is nearly over. This year’s Underneath the Arches is just around the corner.

So to help you have the best night possible, we’ve compiled a list of six things to keep in mind…

    1. Travelling by car?

Do yourself a favour…avoid causing traffic problems, or even risking a parking fine, by making use of the free car-parking provided by the festival.

    2. Check the permitted alcohol amount

What’s worse than labouring a crate of beers down a steep hill in the summer heat…then being told to leave them at the gate because you didn’t check the alcohol limits? 🙁

To ensure this doesn’t happen to you, check the permitted alcohol limits before buying your drinks…

    • 8 x 440ml cans / or 330ml bottles of beer, lager or cider or…
    • 1 x 75cl bottle of wine or…
    • 1 x 50cl or 0.5ltr bottle of spirits

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

    3. Bring your phone / camera

Make this year’s Underneath the Arches more than a memory by capturing your favourite moments.

Grabbing a few pics might even stand you a chance of winning tickets for next year’s instalment 😉

    Underneath the Arches
Hey Homer…it’s Underneath the Arches this Friday!

    4. Get the kids out!

Underneath the Arches is suitable for the whole family. And with schools breaking up on the same day, what better way is there to kick-off the summer holidays?

    5. Looking to relax? Bring a chair

Why not make the most out of this year’s instalment by giving your legs a rest and bringing your own chair?

Enhance your Underneath the Arches experience by enjoying the evening’s entertainment in comfort.

    6. Take your litter home

Although we’re all encouraged to have the best time possible, it’s important to be considerate to local residents. A great way to do this is to take home any litter from any snacks you bring to the festival.

So…has this got you in the mood for this year’s Underneath the Arches? Nice one…we’ll see you on Friday, July 20.
