Which school is getting a new sixth form building?

The plans are approved and the funding is in place – that means work can now begin on a brand new sixth form at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd!

The Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Andy Williams, performed the official “turf cutting” alongside Chair of Governors Aled Roberts and Headteacher Eleri Lewis.

Mr Roberts, said that it was a welcome step forward for the school.

Lead Member for Education, Cllr Phil Wynn, said: “This is part of our ongoing commitment to improving the educational environment for pupils and staff and I know it will be greatly appreciated by both. I would like to thank the Welsh Government for their continued support of Wrexham schools and of course officers for their hard work in securing funding.”

The new build means that space at the school will be freed up ready for further investment to increase capacity at secondary level to secure Welsh secondary medium education in Wrexham

The new building will cost £1.55million and is funded by the Welsh Government’s Band A 21st Century Schools Programme and Wrexham Council.

The works will be undertaken by Read Construction of Wrexham and is scheduled for completion in late 2019.

Richard Heaton, Managing Director of Read, said: “Read are delighted to be undertaking yet another scheme with Wrexham Council to provide a 21st Century learning environment. We will be working with the school and community throughout the works to minimise disruption, whilst maximising social value.”

  • More good news for Welsh Education

More good news for Welsh Education

The go ahead to consult on proposals to increase pupil numbers at Ysgol Bro Alun has just been given the thumbs up by Executive Board.

A consultation will soon begin which will ask for views on Bro Alun increasing from 210 plus 30 nursery to 315 pupils plus 45 nursery.

The increase will be subject to a successful bid to Welsh Government to support the extension of the building and facilities on site.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

The plans are as a result of the continued demand for Welsh medium places within Wrexham and whilst we are meeting the current demand further growth is expected.

This also answers the call by Welsh Government to have 1 million Welsh speakers by 2050.

Results of the consultation will be reported in the near future and we’ll keep you informed of progress.

Green Light for Welsh Medium Primary School

News straight out of our Executive Board, if you’re not already watching it online, is that the go ahead has been given for a 210 Welsh medium primary in Borras.

The approval follows a public statutory consultation which attracted 16 responses.

The new school will begin as a “seeder” school in 2019 at the former Hafod y Wern infant site with entry to the Borras based school in 2021 provided the works at Borras Park Community Primary are complete.

The admission numbers will be 15 places per year group whilst located at the temporary site in Hafod y Wern and increased to 30 places when the school is relocated to its permanent site.

Not only will this mean an increase in the number of Welsh medium school places available but it will also be an opportunity to recruit more teaching and support staff that will be needed at the new school.

Guess who dropped in to our Executive Board?

A warm welcome was given to our next Chief Executive Ian Bancroft when he dropped into this month’s Executive Board meeting.

Ian, who takes up his post at the end of August, listened to proceedings and met with lead Councillors at the Guildhall.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

As someone who lives in Wrexham, he’s always taken a keen interest in what goes on at the Council. But – as you’d expect – that interest has reached a whole new level, as he’ll be playing a key role in moving forward plans for our economy, services and communities.

Ian previously worked for us 14 years ago, before taking up leadership roles at public organisations in Manchester, Merseyside and Flintshire.

And he’s looking forward to his return, saying: “I love Wrexham and can’t wait to put my heart and soul into this job. I’ve been busy getting to know Senior Officers and Councillors, and will be looking to hit the ground running when I start in August. These are challenging times across the UK, but Wrexham is a brilliant place with bags of potential.

“I’m confident that with strong leadership and by working together, we can grow our economy, provide effective services and strengthen our communities.”

  • Cemetery refurbishment completed thanks to National Lottery

Cemetery refurbishment completed thanks to National Lottery

If you’ve visited Wrexham cemetery on Ruabon Road over the past couple of years you’ll have noticed a lot of restoration work going on.

This was all thanks to a £1.5 million National Lottery grant (through the Heritage Lottery Fund) which was used to conserve the listed buildings, refurbish the listed fencing and entrances and research and display the history of the site.

The cemetery is thought to be one of the finest examples of a Victorian cemetery in Wales with a well preserved “gardenesque” landscape which was typical of the time it was built in the 1870s at a cost of £5,000.

    “Listed grade 2 area”

It is on the register of Historic Parks and Gardens of Wales and is a listed grade 2 area. At the time of the bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund the buildings were on the buildings at risk and were in need of restoration and improvement.

The funding provided the opportunity for the necessary works to take place and Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, thanked National Lottery players when the opening took place. He said: “Without the generous funding of National Lottery players these beautiful buildings would still be at risk and the history of those buried here would be a mystery to us all. I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone who buys a National Lottery ticket, and to everyone involved with this great project.”

    “Important Victorian landmark preserved”

Malcolm Smith, Heritage Lottery Fund Committee Member, said: “This has been a truly fascinating restoration project and the finished cemetery that we can see today is the result of a lot of hard work over a number of years. Without people playing the National Lottery this just wouldn’t have been possible, and Wrexham wouldn’t now have this important Victorian landmark preserved for their community and future generations. Thank you National Lottery players.”

All the work has now been completed and the Grade 2 listed East Chapel was unveiled by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Andy Williams, at a short ceremony recently. After a tour of the restoration and conservation works The Mayor said: “It’s been a very impressive project and the work has been completed to a very high standard. Everyone should be very proud of the work undertaken and the legacy they have left in the community.”

    “Huge project for the area”

The community involvement, which played a large part in the National Lottery funding bid, will continue through the work of the Cemetery Development Officer to create a strong link with the local community. Local Member, Cllr Alun Jenkins, said: “The cemetery has been a huge project for the area and everyone involved has shown genuine commitment and passion for the cemetery and I look forward to finding out even more about who is buried here and their significance to the local area. The enthusiastic support of the National Lottery has been very much appreciated and I would like to thank them as without their help this project would never have gone ahead.”

A vote of thanks was also given by the Parks, Countryside and Rights of Way Lead, Martin Howorth who paid tribute to the hard work of the Harrison Design Development, Robin Bayliss and Lawray Architects who ensured the high standards set by the Heritage Lottery Fund were met.

Thanks also went to Grosvenor Construction, Flintshire Fabrications and their contractors for delivering a refurbished cemetery that will last for many years to come.

  • The legend of King Arthur comes to Wrexham…

The legend of King Arthur comes to Wrexham…

This summer, Wrexham Museum is giving you the chance to set off on a quest to rediscover the magic of the Mabinogion, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table!

A new exhibition, Land of Legends, which opens this July, will allow visitors to see some of the medieval manuscripts that preserved the first written versions of the Four Branches of the Mabinogi.

These manuscripts feature some of the earliest references to King Arthur including the 14th century Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch (the White Book of Rhydderch) and Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain), both on display for the first time in north-east Wales.

Wales’ legendary past brought to life

Elsewhere in the Land of Legends exhibition, books, paintings, drawings, animation and costume will bring alive the mythical world of Welsh legends.

Margaret Jones’s original illustrations for Gwyn Thomas’s 1984 update of the Mabinogion are a highlight of the exhibition sparking the imagination and an interest in the Wales that existed a thousand or so years ago.

Look out for some legendary costumes, produced by the Museum’s Knitters and Stitchers group, for both adults and children to try on!

Activities for children and gift shop items

There will also be a series of activities inspired by the Land of Legends theme on Mondays and Tuesdays during the summer holidays. The museum’s shop will be offering for sale a range of Arthurian and legendary souvenirs and gifts suitable for all ages.

The exhibition also includes three animations created by students at Wrexham Glyndŵr University, who have been inspired by the legends of Wales. Each animation has been specially produced for showing in this exhibition.

Making Wrexham a ‘gateway’ to Welsh heritage

Councillor Hugh Jones “It is great to see Wrexham Museum’s partnership with the National Library of Wales bringing another exhibition packed full of medieval and modern treasures to Wrexham.

“This exhibition is one of the many cultural activities happening across the county borough over the summer months proving that Wrexham is the gateway to Wales’s heritage for locals and tourists alike.”

  • Score a goal, serve an ace… more fun stuff for kids

Score a goal, serve an ace… more fun stuff for kids

The summer holidays are approaching. Which means children with bundles of energy… which they need to release somehow. They need to run, they need to play, they need to… tire themselves out!

    But how?

Well, there’s a whole day’s worth of fun to be had at one local park. Probably more than a day’s worth to be honest…

But you’ll need to come prepared. A football, tennis racquets and balls, a basketball, table tennis bats and balls. We’ll leave it up to you to decide which…

Here’s how they can run themselves ragged at Bellevue Park.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

    Find their inner Federer

Perhaps the crown gems of Bellevue Park are the recently refurbished tennis courts. There are five, so you would be unlucky not to find an unoccupied one and they’re free to the public.

So if you have a budding Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal or Serena Williams in your family they’ll have a whale of a time. So serve them up a treat… no apologies for the pun!

    I need a smaller racquet

Hiding around the side of the tennis courts is a free to use table tennis table. If they haven’t quite mastered tennis just yet, this can be a good way to start. See how long you can rally with them for.

Set a target and see if you can beat it.

    World Cup fever

Ah, the beautiful game! Let them become their heroes on the full-sized football pitch. Ronaldo versus Messi? Or son or daughter versus dad or mum? It doesn’t matter – you make the rules! Local club matches sometimes take place at weekends, but they’re more than welcome to watch.

Help them improve their skills and get fit at the same time. Everyone’s a winner… well technically only one team can win, unless it’s a draw… you know what we mean.

Make it a slam dunk too?

If you fancy some hang time, have a game of basketball while you’re there. There’s a basketball court/5-a-side pitch next to the tennis courts, so if your kids are more Michael Jordan than Michael Owen this could be a good option.

Whatever you choose to do there’s plenty of entertainment for them at Bellevue Park.
What’s more, events and activities for all ages are organised throughout the year.
