  • Things you can do this Recycle Week to help Wales become world leader

Things you can do this Recycle Week to help Wales become world leader

    Guest Article – Wales Recycles

It’s well known that people in Wales are mighty recyclers. An impressive 95% of us now recycle regularly, up from 92% last year. We’re third best in the world and going for first. But there is a lot more we can do to help Wales achieve the top spot.

Currently, the biggest barrier to recycling in Wales is confusion about what can and can’t be recycled.

New research shows that, despite all our efforts, 72% of us are still putting at least one item into the rubbish bin when it can be recycled. And 83% of us throw items into the recycling that can’t actually be recycled at home. This contaminates the recycling collected, which lowers its quality and value.

Take part in our climate change survey

Let’s all play our part and get Wales to no.1.

Empty perfume and aftershave bottles: Recycle at home (but check locally)

Most local authorities collect empty perfume and aftershave bottles as part of their local service, but only 47% of people in Wales recycle them.

Making glass items from recycled materials uses around 95% less energy compared to making a new glass bottle from scratch. Do your bit by recycling your empty perfume and aftershave bottles.

    Drinking glasses: Not at home

Drinking glasses can’t be recycled using the same process used for common glass bottles and jars, which means they can’t be collected to be recycled together. Make sure that broken glass is wrapped up safely before putting it in your bag or bin for non-recyclable waste.

If you have any drinking glasses you no longer want but are in a good condition, donate them to your local charity shop.

Food and drink foil pouches: Not at home

Food and drink pouches such as baby food, microwavable rice and pet food cannot currently be recycled at home. Why? They’re made using a mix of different materials, which may include aluminium metal, fibres and plastics, which currently makes them difficult to recycle.

Some of these items can be recycled at some front-of-store locations at participating supermarkets.

    Foil: Recycle at home

All clean foil can be recycled and 69% of Welsh citizens already recycle it. Empty, rinse and scrunch foil items before popping them into your recycling, which will help them get through the sorting process without getting lost.

    Plastic toys: Not at home

Plastic toys are made from a material known as ‘hard plastic’, which can’t be recycled in the same way as plastic packaging such as drinks bottles or margarine tubs.

If you have plastic toys that still have life left in them, take them to a charity shop or donate to a local community group. If your plastic toys and games are beyond repair, it may still be possible to recycle some of the parts such as batteries and battery packs if you dismantle them.

Broken plastic toys or games can also be taken to your local recycling centre and recycled with ‘hard plastics’.

    Toothpaste tubes: Not at home

Toothpaste tubes are often made of different types of plastics, as well as a metal layer, which currently makes them difficult to recycle. Despite some tubes saying they’re recyclable, it’s difficult for crews to identify those that can and can’t be recycled when collecting your recycling, therefore it’s better for the overall quality of your recycling if you don’t recycle your toothpaste tubes at home.

They might be accepted at some front-of-store locations at participating supermarkets.

Aerosols: Recycle at home (but check locally)

Most councils accept empty aerosol cans such as deodorant, dry shampoo and air freshener as part of their collection service. Metal is infinite, meaning it can be recycled again and again without losing any of its quality, so ensure you’re helping to preserve our precious resources by recycling all your empty aerosol cans.

Cookware glass such as Pyrex: Not at home

Whilst Pyrex cookware is a type of glass, it has been specially treated in the manufacturing process to endure high temperatures, which makes it not-recyclable from home.

If you need to dispose of broken glass cookware from home wrap it safely in old newspaper or kitchen roll, or double bag before putting it in your non-recyclable waste bin or bag. Alternatively, it can be recycled with ‘rubble’ at most local recycling centres.

If your cookware glass isn’t broken – you simply no longer need or want it – why not take it to a local charity shop so that others can use it?

  • Cost of living group begins work on helping Wrexham residents

Cost of living group begins work on helping Wrexham residents

A special task-force set up to help maximise support for Wrexham residents during the cost of living crisis has met for the first time.

Wrexham Council recently announced it would be setting up an all-party working group to look at the challenges facing local communities, and to find practical ways to help local people.

The group met for the first time on Thursday, October 13 and identified a number of key actions, including:

    • Working closely with Wrexham Foodbank to explore new ways to help ensure nobody goes hungry.
    • Contacting vulnerable council housing tenants to make sure they’re ok.
    • Looking at ways to expand the ‘warm places’ scheme – so there are more places where people can go to stay warm if they’re struggling to heat their home.
    • Signposting people to information, so they can claim what they’re entitled to and make the most of the support available. Actions include:
      – Providing information on the council website about benefits and grants, tips for reducing household bills, coping with money-worries etc.
      – Making sure council staff (especially frontline employees) know where to signpost people to for help.
      – Holding information events across the county borough.
      – Using the council’s Housing Hotline magazine to make sure council tenants know where to get support.

The group – which will meet once a fortnight to begin with – includes councillors from all political groups on Wrexham Council, as well as council officers.

Councillor David A Bithell, who chairs the group, says:

“It’s really positive to see all the political groups coming together to work on this issue, and we identified some solid actions during our first meeting.

“The cost of living crisis is a national problem, and although we can’t fix it, there are things we can do as a local council to help our communities.

“Everyone on the group is one hundred percent committed to working together to do what we can, because we all recognise that people need practical help right now.

“By making sure people know what support is available, and helping them put meals on the table and stay warm, we can hopefully make a difference.”

Lighting it green and making a swoosh for Recycle Week

Walking around Wrexham you might notice a couple of changes this week.

If you’re taking a stroll through Llwyn Isaf during the evenings, you’ll see that the Guildhall balcony is being lit green until October 23.

And if you’re travelling along St Giles Way, you’ll notice our recycling ‘swoosh’ in the grass by the steel sculpture.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “We’re delighted to be once again adding our support to Recycle Week. This year the campaign focuses on one of the biggest barriers people have around recycling, which is the confusion about what can and can’t be recycled. It’s important to give people all the information they need so that can recycle correctly and confidently. We’ll be sharing recycling information throughout the week, and Wales Recycles have also set up the website RecycleWeekWales.org.uk which people can visit to get their recycling questions answered.”

National Adoption Week: Could you provide a loving forever home?

National Adoption Week takes place from the 17th – 23rd October.

During National Adoption Week, we are aiming to raise awareness of adoption in Wrexham and North Wales.

Lead Member for Children’s Services, Cllr Rob Walsh, said: “If you’ve ever thought about adopting a child or children, there is a wealth of knowledge in our Adoption Team and dedicated social workers who all work together with local families and local schools to build better futures for local children. If you need any more information or would like to take the next step in your adoption journey, please contact the team. They are extremely knowledgeable and more than happy to help with any questions or information you may need.”

If you have room in your heart and home, then there’s every chance that you can adopt. We welcome applications from everyone regardless of relationship status, sexuality, beliefs or ethnicity. If you have the flexibility and resilience to give a child – or children – a happy home, we’d love to hear from you.

As a starting point for adoption, you must:
    • Be able to provide a safe and stable home for a child
    • Be at least 21 years old – but there’s no upper age limit
    • Be a resident of the UK
    • Have no cautions or convictions against a child (the same applies to any other members of your household)
    • Have finished fertility treatment more than 6 months ago
    • Have a strong, stable and enduring relationship if you are with a partner

Recycle Week 2022 will answer your recycling questions

Recycle Week 2022 takes place from 17 to 23 October and aims to answer your recycling questions so that we can all recycle better together and help Wales in our continued push to become the best recyclers in the world (we’re currently third).

Recycle Week is the largest national annual recycling campaign and is delivered in Wales by Wales Recycles.

“Give people all the information they need”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “We’re delighted to be once again adding our support to Recycle Week. Avoid ‘wishcycling’

Wishcycling is basically putting something in the recycling bin and hoping it will be recycled, even if there is little evidence to confirm this assumption. This inevitably leads to contamination, so it’s really important you don’t do this.

Is there that one item that you’re not quite sure what to do with? Just head over to RecycleWeekWales.org.uk and get the answer to your question 🙂

    #Wrexcycle20

We’re going to be working with several Eco-Councils based in Wrexham schools over the coming months, as we continue to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of having a kerbside recycling service in Wrexham

We’re setting twenty challenges to celebrate #Wrexcycle20! If you’re a teacher and your school are interested in joining this challenge it’s not too late to do so. You can register your interest by emailing Wrexcycle20@wrexham.gov.uk

The challenges will cover themes including reducing single-use plastics, recycling, composting and eco-wrapping.

    Keep up to date

We’ll be sharing recycling tips on our social media platforms throughout the week, and you can follow the #RecycleWeek hashtag to get involved.

  • New development in Wrexham to create ‘specialist’ supported living homes for single parents and their children

New development in Wrexham to create ‘specialist’ supported living homes for single parents and their children

    Guest article – ClwydAlyn

ClwydAlyn housing association in partnership with Wrexham Council and developers Harley and Clarke will soon welcome its first tenants into a new supported living scheme in Wrexham that will provide a safe haven for single parents and their children.

This comes following a recent review into supported living which identified a need for specific accommodation within the area.

Executive Director of Care & Support at ClwydAlyn, Edward Hughes said:

“Created with the hope to provide safety, refuge and guidance to pregnant women, or a parent with young babies who have little or no support; this collaborative venture will offer a safe haven for giving them the hope they need to get back on their feet.

“Many of these parents are no stranger to abuse, neglect and trauma and this new scheme will be a place where they will be welcomed with open arms into safety.

“Now in its final stages of development, the scheme will provide residents with the love they need to help them thrive, offering support throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond with their children in a safe space that will hopefully help them find a way forward.”

The accommodation will consist of four units with shared communal lounges such as a resident lounge, kitchen, dining room and garden, staffed 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Each resident will have a dedicated support officer, with the support being tailored to meet the individual needs and aspirations of residents. During their stay we will equip them with the skills to enable them to live independently in the community whether this being learning how to manage a home, improve their health and wellbeing, or access employment or training.

The support workers will also work alongside our residents to help prepare for motherhood during their pregnancy and to assist them to build a strong foundation to go on and enjoy a fulfilling and rewarding lifetime as a parent.

Councillor David A Bithell, Wrexham Council’s Lead Member for Housing, said:

“Every parent and baby should have somewhere safe, where they can get the support and kindness, they need to build a positive future.

“As a council, we’re committed to protecting vulnerable parents and their children, and this new supported housing facility will make a real difference to so many lives.

“I’m delighted we’ve been able to work with ClwydAlyn on this project, and it’s a great example of how organisations can work together to support the most vulnerable in our communities.”

    Edward Hughes added:

“No single parent should be left alone or afraid, and these new homes will ensure that they will be placed in a safe and supportive environment that will help them rebuild their lives and enable them to become strong, independent, and focused parents.”

  • Our new and improved bin and recycling collection calendars are available

Our new and improved bin and recycling collection calendars are available

The new bin and recycling collection calendars for 2022-23 are now up on our website and they look a little different than they did last year.

We wanted to make them more accessible, so the calendars are now made up of three tables, with each table showing the bins and recycling we’ll be collecting on the specified dates.

The first table shows the dates we collect Refuse, Recycling and Food Waste, the second shows the dates we collect Garden Waste (if you’re signed up), Recycling and Food Waste, and the third shows the few winter dates when we just collect your Recycling and Food Waste.

Our new and improved bin and recycling collection calendars are available

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “We wanted to make the bin calendars easier for everyone to follow, so you will notice they look a bit different this time. You can view your calendar by visiting wrexham.gov.uk/bins; it’s really simple way to see all your collection information quickly, and it will help to prevent you from missing out on any collections.”

    Some things to note

    • Your collection day remains the same
    • Garden waste collections will be reduced during the winter months of December, January and February. Fortnightly collections resume again from March
    • There will be no collections on December 26 or 27 this year, although affected residents will be able to put extra recycling and food waste out the following week

    Bin reminder alerts

You can also sign up for email alerts, which will be sent the day before your collection day to remind you to put your bin out and which bin to put out.
