Cost of Living and Wellbeing Events in Wrexham

As the cost of living spirals, we are aware that many of our tenants and residents will be struggling to make ends meet.

Wrexham Council’s housing department has teamed up with other agencies and organisations to put together a series of cost of living and wellbeing events across the borough, where tenants will be able to access information from a variety of partner organisations on topics such as energy efficiency, water efficiency and bill reduction, debt advice and financial support.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

The Wrexham Communities for Work team will be available to assist people with gaining employment skills, from assisting with cv preparation and interview skills to being able to signpost tenants to vacancies in the area.

Financial Inclusions Officers from the Council’s housing department will be available to assist tenants wherever possible and help them to maximise their income.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Housing said, “The Council, and in particular the housing department, are very conscious of the effect the cost of living crisis is having on our tenants and we are very keen to support our tenants wherever we can. Local estate offices each have a Financial Inclusion Officer based within them, whose role is to help tenants to maximise their income.

“Up to April 2022 they have provided assistance to over 775 tenants and have had a positive effect on both tenants’ financial position and their mental wellbeing. We are keen to promote this service and Financial Inclusion Officers will be available at all the events that have been organised and I would urge anyone who is struggling to either attend one of the events or contact their local housing office.”

Dates, times and locations of the events are:

    Monday 7 November 9am – 1pm Brynteg Memorial Hall

    Monday 14 November 1pm – 3pm Ty Pawb

Friday 18 November 10am -1pm Gwersyllt Resource Centre

    Monday 21 November 1pm – 4pm Johnstown Community Centre

Thursday 24 November 1pm – 3pm Plas Madoc Leisure Centre

Friday 18 November 10am -1pm Gwersyllt Resource Centre

When it comes to the cost of living, making sure you claim all the help and support you’re entitled to could make a huge difference.

WELSH MEDIUM EDUCATION-THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Around three quarters of the world’s population speak two or more languages.

Speaking more than one language opens up a wide range of social activities and expands horizons.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

When applying for your child’s school place it is well worth considering the benefits a Welsh medium education can offer.

Wrexham County Borough Council is committed to providing good quality education and equality of access in the national language of choice.

We work closely with a range of partners and stakeholders to further raise standards in literacy and numeracy, and to tackle the impact of poverty on education achievement.

We have produced a booklet offering further information on the advantages of a bilingual education.

The booklet offers a guide to the benefits of bilingualism, dispels certain myths, offers case studies and also signposts to further Welsh language resources and organisations.

We have also produced a case study video that showcases the benefits of a Welsh education.

Lead Member for Education Cllr Phil Wynn, said: “An important step in a child’s educational journey comes when applying for their school place. “This year the closing date for applications lands on November 18th. “Reading through the booklet produced will give you a more informed decision when choosing either a bi-lingual, or English education for your child.”

Lead Member for Environment, Culture and Welsh Language Champion Cllr Hugh Jones said: “With the Welsh football team qualifying for the World Cup, the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, and other Welsh success stories shining a light on Wales as a nation, and the Welsh language-there is a growing popularity for learning Welsh. “A Welsh language education is a skill that could give your child a competitive advantage for life.”

  • A brand new exhibition has opened at Tŷ Pawb

A brand new exhibition has opened at Tŷ Pawb

The Tŷ Pawb Open takes place every two years at Wrexham’s multi-award winning markets, arts and community venue.

This year’s edition of the exhibition features works by over 150 artists from across the country, working in a range of mediums including paint, print and sculpture.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

This follows a fantastic response to the open call, held earlier this year. Over 220 artists submitted more than 600 artworks for consideration.

All the featured artists and their friends and families were invited to a special evening event to officially open the exhibition.

Visitors to the exhibition are able to cast a vote for their favourite artwork. The ‘People’s Prize’ winner will be announced at the close of the exhibition in January.

All the works are for sale – ideal for some early Christmas shopping!

Cllr Hugh Jones said: “The Open exhibition is one of the most popular exhibitions on the Tŷ Pawb’s calendar. The huge range of colours, variety and creativity on show make it an accessible and enjoyable exhibition for all ages.

“The gallery really does look stunning and our thanks must go to all the artist who contributed works, and to the hugely talented team who helped organise and put the exhibition together. I would encourage anyone visiting Tŷ Pawb during the busy autumn and winter period to pop into the gallery and make the most of this wonderful space.”

  • British Military Tattoo “A thoroughly enjoyable event”

British Military Tattoo “A thoroughly enjoyable event”

The British Military Tattoo returned to Wrexham on Saturday with their show The North Wales Military Music Pageant “A Reel of Remembrance” and a truly spectacular evening it turned out to be.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

The audience was entertained and inspired by performances from:

    • The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of The Royal Welsh
    • The Regimental Mascots of The British Army
    • The Royal Welch Fusiliers Corps of Drums
    • The Massed Military Wives Choir and Soloist Ava Gordon Butler
    • The British International Tattoo Pipes and Drums
    • Liverpool Concert Orchestra and Canzonetta Choir
    • Military Drill Displays form The Military preparation College of Training
    • Batala Bangor representing The Commonwealth
    • Emma May School of Irish Dance
    • White Rose Highland Dancers
    • Roberts Bakery Band

    And many more

Before the musical spectacular there were military displays from all three armed services and a wide selection of stands and activities for the whole family to  enjoy.

Cllr Beverley Parry Jones, Armed Forces Champion, who attended the event said, “This was a particularly poignant event as we followed a musical journey through each decade of the former Queen’s reign. There were stirring musical performances throughout the evening and it was a thoroughly enjoyable event.

“As we approach the British Legion Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Sunday it was a fitting tribute to our armed forces and brings to the front of our minds the ultimate sacrifice made on our behalf so that we can enjoy the freedom that we have today.”

The Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Brian Cameron was also in attendance and said after the event, “What a truly inspiring event and such an honour to see it here in Wrexham where our armed forces are particularly close to our hearts. It’s been an eventful year for the armed services and I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in all the events that have been held.”

Organiser, Gareth Butler, said, “We were really excited about bringing this event to Wrexham once again and had increased the number of tickets available following the success of last year’s event. Wrexham didn’t disappoint and it proved to be a really uplifting and reflective event and was an evening to remember.

“I very much hope that we can gain enough support to make this an annual event for the area and already have our show “The Mighty Atlantic” Commemorating The Battle of The Atlantic written and cast for July 15th 2023.”

The event was in aid of the Not Forgotten Veterans Charity.

  • Closing Ceremony for the Knife Angel… a new journey then begins for Wrexham

Closing Ceremony for the Knife Angel… a new journey then begins for Wrexham

Members of the public are invited to the closing ceremony for the Knife Angel on Wednesday 26th October at 6pm when the statue will be lit up and are encouraged to bring along a battery tea light candle or a torch.

There will be a few short speeches around the base of the statue which looks amazing when lit up.

The Knife Angel has been well received in Wrexham with lots of individuals and organisations visiting to see it. Some groups affected by knife crime made a special visit to the city centre to see it and many were moved by its presence.

Help with the cost of living – claim what’s yours, reduce your bills, look after your health.

Students from secondary schools and Coleg Cambria have also visited and had workshops about knife crime and the feedback from them has been very positive.

The Knife Angel leaves us on 1 November to begin its journey to Gwent but Wrexham’s story will continue. The lasting legacy of the Knife Angel will be the continued engagement of partner organisations, including the police and youth services, with young people in order to keep the conversation about knife crime relevant and appropriate.

In Coleg Cambria’s Bersham Road campus work continues on our own Knife Dragon which is about a third completed but already standing over 2 metres. The Dragon is being made using weapons safely handed in at local police stations as part of regional amnesty campaigns and may eventually contain knives that were handed in during the Knife Angel’s visit.

It’s expected to be completed next summer and will initially be on display at the campus.

  • Stop Loan Sharks Wales – Does “I Just need £20 for the meter” sound familiar?

Stop Loan Sharks Wales – Does “I Just need £20 for the meter” sound familiar?

Stop Loan Sharks Wales has launched a new campaign to help communities in Wales recognise the signs of illegal money lending and signpost the support available.

We’re not talking huge amounts of money – it could be £20 for the electric meter. But that amount could end up becoming much, much larger with interest payments adding up week after week after week.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

It could also be a casual arrangement to begin with and it may take place at the school gate, on What’s App or whilst enjoying a pint after work but as repayment becomes due some situations can become threatening.

People who are struggling financially can often look for a quick fix, but it’s really important to know that there are always much better options than lending from ‘loan sharks’.

    There is help available

The message to anyone in this situation is that there is help available. You can report in confidence to the illegal moneylending team who can support you and tackle the criminals.

Stop Loan Sharks Wales urges Wrexham residents to make sure that anyone offering to lend money has a consumer credit authority. If you are a loan shark victim, or think there may be a shark operating nearby then pick up the phone and call now on 0300 123 311.

Specialist client liaison officers will support and assist victims, advising on debt and other problems.

    Your Credit Union

If you’re struggling financially, and need support, using your Credit Union is a far cheaper and safer way of getting a loan.

Some benefits of doing this are:

    • Easy application
    • Low interest rates
    • Quick decisions
    • No early repayment penalties
