A new kind of gallery opens at Tŷ Pawb…

Shoppers are in for another treat at Tŷ Pawb thanks to a brand new store which has just opened it’s doors for business!

Gallery 01 was officially unveiled to the public by the Mayor of Wrexham, Cllr Andy Williams, at a grand opening on Friday.

The new store, based in Tŷ Pawb’s south arcade, specialises in top brand names for occasional wear, jewellery, shoes, fragrance and gifts, as well as bath and body products.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

A new and unique store for Wrexham

Ashley Vaughan-Pearson, Manager of Gallery 01, said: “We are very pleased that we’ve managed to secure one of the shop units at Tŷ Pawb. The current state of the shopping scene in Wrexham has made room for shops like ourselves to pave the way for more independent outlets that can bring something new and unique to the town.

“Not everyone wants to buy clothes online these days. They want to be able to see, feel and try on the items and to get friendly, face to face service from the staff who work there.

“I’m also delighted that my sister, Lea, has been able to join us for the opening. She works as a HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) First Response paramedic in Manchester and actually received a Woman of the Year award in 2017 for being one of the first responders at the Manchester Arena bombing.

“2018 is the year of the woman and this is a shop that specializes in women’s clothing and accessories so there was no one more ideal and inspirational i could think of to help me open the shop than Lea.”

More new businesses opening at Tŷ Pawb

Gallery 01 is one of three new business to open at Tŷ Pawb in the last few weeks. The other two include Kamilla Hair Studio, and Teenage Wildlife, which stocks an eclectic collection of vinyl records and retro clothing.

The Mayor said: “I’m delighted to see another high quality retailer moving into Tŷ Pawb. The stock here looks really fabulous and I’m sure new visitors will be very impressed with what’s on offer. Three new businesses opening at Tŷ Pawb is very positive news for Wrexham and another step in the right direction to put us firmly on the map of attractive shopping destinations.”

Lead Member for People – Communities, Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, Cllr Hugh Jones, said: “It’s very pleasing to see the market stalls at Tŷ Pawb now occupied with such a variation of eclectic businesses. There is truly something here for everyone and I hope this will help to continue to attract new visitors over the summer and grow Tŷ Pawb’s reputation as a landmark attraction in the town.

“The combination of markets, arts and community events at Tŷ Pawb is a great achievement for the town and something we are very proud of.”

    Gallery 01 is open from 10am-5:30pm Monday-Friday and 9:30am-5:30pm on a Saturday.

  • Could you support someone’s health and well-being?

Could you support someone’s health and well-being?

Do you run a service which could help or support a person’s health and well-being?

That could be anything from a small business to a busy community group.

While we as a council can provide more formal care, there are plenty of people out there that can help out with what we’d call “informal support”.

SPOTTED A POTHOLE? REPORT IT HERE.

That can cover a lot of ground.

There are things that can be provided by businesses, like mobile hairdressers, gardeners or cleaners.

But it can also be handled by community groups – anything from luncheon clubs to bingo sessions.

And they can help out in ways we can’t, filling up those gaps that the formal care arrangements that we offer normally can’t reach.

And in lots of cases, that type of support can be indispensable, and help someone stay in their home for longer.

Read on if you think you can help – it’ll even give you the opportunity for free advertising!

    Dewis Cymru

Our aim is to provide an-easy-to-use list of all these services, which gives people who need support the chance to find the help they need.

And that’s where Dewis Cymru comes in.

Dewis is an online service which helps connect those in need of support

Although the work behind Dewis involves a lot of different partners and providers, the service itself is pretty simple and easy to use.

It’s there to help direct people to the services they need – and, on the flip-side, help services get in touch with people they might be able to help.

And the great news is – it’s FREE to sign up!

If you think you can help, head to the website at www.dewis.wales and register your details.

Signing up to Dewis and adding your information is easy and the site provides all the directions you’ll need.

But for more guidance or more info on this service, contact our officers at commissioning@wrexham.gov.uk

“They can help out where we can’t”

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Dewis Cymru is in an invaluable resource, and as well as making sure all those who need support know they can look it up on Dewis, we also want to make sure that all those providers who can help are signed up to it as well.

“Many of them can help out where we can’t, and Dewis publicises their services to users completely free of charge.”

One of the great things about being in Wales, is that you’re never more than an hour from the sea. How cool is that?

And it’s not just spending time on the beaches and coastline that’s great – there’s loads to do along our rivers, lakes and routes to the sea in North East Wales.

  • Celebration event for RAF Wales honour

Celebration event for RAF Wales honour

This year sees the centenary of the RAF, the world’s first independent air force, and we’ll be celebrating by awarding a Civic Honour to RAF Wales to mark the occasion.

And in traditional Wrexham style this means a big and free town centre celebration for everyone to join in. The event will begin when the RAF Wales muster on Llwyn Isaf and there’ll be RAF exhibitions both inside and out and lots of activities for people of all ages. Highlight of the day will be a fly over by the iconic Dakota – military transport plane. It will all take place on August 25 so put the date in your diary!

SPOTTED A POTHOLE? REPORT IT HERE.

For us in Wrexham the Dakota is particularly appropriate as it was the type of plane flown by David Lord, VC, DFC, whose bravery ensured essential supplies were dropped over Arnhem during World War II even though his plane was damaged and burning and he eventually lost his life. His bravery is recognised in a memorial plaque at the Memorial Hall in Bodhyfryd.

The event will take place alongside the Street Festival on the August 25 which should guarantee a day to remember!

Cllr David Griffiths, Armed Forces Champion, said: “This is very appropriate for their 100 anniversary year and I hope my fellow councillors will be as supportive of this as I am.”

  • Great news for bus users in Wrexham

Great news for bus users in Wrexham

Bus users in Wrexham will soon benefit from the launch of a new budget bus operator.

EasyCoach is part of the easyGroup family of brands, led by billionaire easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou.

From Wednesday 27 June, easyCoach’s trademark orange and white buses will serve Wrexham and the surrounding area, and the man at the wheel of the enterprise, founder Andrew Martin, is confident locals will enjoy an improved service at lower prices.

SPOTTED A POTHOLE? REPORT IT HERE.

Andrew says: “The Wrexham bus service network has fared badly recently, with the closure of two out of three major operators since 2016. Having just one dominant operator isn’t great for the consumer, so we saw an opening for an innovative brand that would bring a breath of fresh air to the town. We guarantee fares will always be lower than our main competitor’s, giving customers more bang for their buck.”

EasyCoach launches with four main services. Route 2 operates from Oswestry to Wrexham five minutes ahead of Arriva West Midlands. Likewise the 2D Wrexham to Cefn-Mawr will leave five minutes before Arriva’s 2C service. Working in tandem, both easyCoach routes will deliver a service from Plas Madoc, via Ruabon and Johnstown, to Wrexham Bus Station every 15 minutes.

    “Reinstate much-missed services”

EasyCoach will also reinstate the much-missed Wrexham to Wrexham Industrial Estate bus, operating as route 42. Similarly easyCoach’s new route 44 will offer a service from Wrexham to Barker’s Lane at 30-minute intervals.

Andrew says: “Getting out of town to the industrial estate, as well as getting into town from residential areas, has been extremely difficult for anyone without a car. EasyCoach is set to change that. Besides cheaper fares, we will also have promos throughout the year, as well as concessions for passengers who are retired or disabled.”

EasyCoach will also make it simpler and cheaper to get from Wrexham to both Liverpool and Manchester Airports.

Andrew explains: “We already run easyBus airport shuttles from Wrexham. Anyone with an easyBus ticket to the airport can now travel for free on an easyCoach into Wrexham bus station, and then it’s a simple change for the airport service. This won’t just save money, but also means more convenience for passengers and fewer cars on the road.”

Andrew’s wife Sarah hails from nearby Shrewsbury, so the entrepreneur, who recently sold his French easyBus business to National Express Group, is delighted to be creating jobs in the local area.

    “10 drivers recruited”

So far 10 drivers have been recruited, including one who has decided to come out of retirement. All will be thoroughly trained to provide the best in customer service ahead of the 27 June launch.

Andrew says: “There are no security screens on our buses so the driver isn’t separate and hidden away. We want them to be open and available to help the public, which builds relations with our valued passengers.”

Work is currently being completed on the easyCoach depot in Rhosymedre, which is being painted orange in keeping with the easyGroup’s instantly recognisable colour.

If the Wrexham service proves a success, Andrew hopes to expand into other towns as well.

    “Passengers feel they deserve more”

He says: “The philosophy of the easyGroup is very much about taking on the big boys. We know from feedback in Wrexham that passengers feel they deserve more, and through cheaper fares and better service, easyCoach is well-placed to provide it. We’re a UK company and proud to be investing in the local community. Although we’re focussing on Wrexham right now, we’re identifying other areas where we could potentially roll out the brand.”

Cllr David A Bithell Lead Member for Environment and Transport said the bus industry more recently has seen significant decline and welcomed new services and companies to Wrexham. He added Easy Coach have moved their depot to Wrexham from Shrewsbury which also provides new jobs and a boost to the local economy. Wrexham council wish the new venture a success.

Twenty million to be spent on major redevelopment

Coleg Cambria is set to undergo a £20 million redevelopment of one of their sites, which could revolutionise the learning experience in North-East Wales.

The college has pinpointed Cambria’s Yale Campus in Wrexham in the next stage of upgrades, with £40million spent on several sites in the previous 18-months.

The college’s plans include a three-storey complex kitted out with the latest technology and learning equipment to give students the best opportunity to achieve their goals. Meanwhile, a 200-seater conference hall and cutting edge study space is also within the college’s plans.

SPOTTED A POTHOLE? REPORT IT HERE.

Along with IT Suites and meeting rooms, the facility will also concentrate on North Wales’ sporting prowess and leaning on bringing the best out of the region with a revolutionary sports facility.

In terms of a time frame, the’yre aiming to begin building as early as 2019 in preparation for the 2020/21 academic year, subject to approval.

Chief executive of Coleg Cambria David Jones said in a statement: “As we prepare to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Coleg Cambria, this latest development reinforces our commitment to Wrexham and to the region, and to the education and careers of this and future generations of learners.

Mr Jones went on to say, “we have achieved so much and established ourselves as probably the number one college in the UK based on current performance. That makes me so proud, as we are shaping the culture of thousands of young people in modern, innovative and welcoming facilities – this new-look campus would take us even further in achieving our goals.”

In addition to over £10m of money that the college has generated, it is looking to secure additional match funding from the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and Education Programme to support the plans, and is in the final stage of completing a detailed business.

Students and staff will be consulted before final plans are put in place and according to Mr Jones their input is ‘vital’.

These plans are sure to be welcomed following the success of a £10million development of Wrexham’s Bersham Road and the recent £3.5million build of the Business Centre in Northop.

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, welcomed the news, he said: “These are very exciting proposals and will further enhance the education facilities for young people in Wrexham and the surrounding area.”
