  • Portuguese Protocol signing is a First for the UK

Portuguese Protocol signing is a First for the UK

There were historic scenes at the Guildhall today when His Excellency The Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Mr José Luís Carneiro, signed a Co-operation Protocol with Wrexham Council.

The signing is the first of its kind in the UK and only the fifth in Europe.

    “Close working relationship”

The Protocol recognises the close working relationship between the Council and the local Portuguese groups and its role in contributing to the well-being of Portuguese nationals in Wrexham.

GET SNAPPY – FOLLOW US ON SNAPCHAT.

The Protocol will promote a sustainable relationship with the Portuguese community and will also be of help to us meet our public sector duties under Equalities and the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act 2015.

The guests invited to see this event included representatives from the two Portuguese run community groups in Wrexham – Associacao da Cultura Portuguesa Gra Bretanha and the Comunidade de Lingua Portuguesa de Wrexham.

The Protocol does not need any funding from the Council and it will recognise the ongoing commitment of the Consulate General of Portugal in Manchester to the Portuguese community in Wrexham. It will also help us to tackle discrimination, promote equality of opportunity and promote good relations.

    “Wrexham is leading the way”

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council who signed the Protocol on behalf of the Council, said: “I am delighted that Wrexham is leading the way in the UK to formally establish a Protocol of Co-operation between the Portuguese Government and Wrexham County Borough Council which will not only strengthen our excellent working relationship with the local Portuguese community who are living and working in Wrexham but also with the Portuguese Government.

His Excellency The Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities, Mr José Luís Carneiro, said: “In the UK as in Portugal, local councils are essential in embracing and ensuring a successful integration of migrants in the community. This applies at many levels: employment, language and culture, business development and municipal services. In this way, this type of Protocol aims to establish a good context for integration, at all levels, across municipalities where there is a significant Portuguese community, as in Wrexham, with activity which can be appreciated by local authorities.”

  • Guess who’s just had a sneak preview of Tŷ Pawb?

Guess who’s just had a sneak preview of Tŷ Pawb?

There’s only a few weeks to go until the opening of Tŷ Pawb – Wrexham’s brand new £4.5m markets, community and arts facility which has been funded by the Arts Council Wales, Welsh Government and Wrexham County Borough Council.

But, while most of us will have to wait until the official opening (stick it in your diary – Dydd Llun Pawb on April 2), a group of lucky youngsters have been able to get an exclusive tour of this impressive new facility as the building work reaches the final stages.

GET SNAPPY – FOLLOW US ON SNAPCHAT.

Secondary school pupils from St Mary’s school, Ysgol Y Grango and Hafod Y Wern were among the lucky few to get the tour treatment – and we even let the teachers in too!

Tŷ Pawb gets a thumbs up from the pupils of St Mary’s. Also pictured (left to right) are: Kelly Jones (The Consortium), Ellie Ashby (WCBC Gallery Assistant), Miss Heather Williams (Teacher, St Mary’s School), Cllr Phil Wynne (Lead Member for People – Education), Mrs Sarah Chapman (Teacher, St Mary’s School), Cllr Hugh Jones (Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Member for People – Communities, Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety), Alison Hourihane (Wynne Construction)

    The rooms are nearly ready

As part of the tour, the children were able to see some of the exciting new spaces which will soon be filled with all kinds of exhibitions, arts and cultural community events.

This included the new market hall, where traders will soon be getting their new stalls ready for action, the huge new performance area and the impressive looking exhibition room, Gallery One, which even has its own climate control to protect the more fragile exhibits!

The children were shown photos and designs for Tŷ Pawb, including some snaps of how it used to look which help to show how much work has been done to convert the old People’s Market into this impressive new building.

    Shepherd’s delights…

There was also something rather unusual to see amongst the concrete and bricks. A traditional shepherds hut! During 2015/16 the gallery commissioned artist Antonia Dewhurst to work with The Caia Park Partnership and Stars Wrexham to design and build a full scale Shepherd’s Hut.

The project enabled young people (16-25) to develop transferrable skills to help them find employment. It’s based on the design of one the typical huts which once would have been dotted all over the fields and farms of rural Wales. The hut will now be used as a workshop/studio space within Tŷ Pawb.

Once the main tour was over, the children from St Mary’s took part in a short workshop where they were able to design their own Shepherds Huts using a range of art materials.

The tour was organised by our team at Oriel Wrexham (soon to be Tŷ Pawb), with support from our contractors, Wynne Construction, who are carrying out the building work on Tŷ Pawb, and The Consortium, who provide stationery and materials for our schools.

They were able to provide the support as a Community Benefit scheme. This is when contractors who work with the council contribute or donate something ‘extra’ which benefits the local community or economy.

Bringing ‘world class’ arts and culture to our doorstep

Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Member for People – Communities, Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, Cllr Hugh Jones, said: “It’s wonderful to see the enthusiasm which is now building up around the opening of this fantastic new facility.

“Getting our local schools and young people involved with arts and culture is going to be an integral part of Tŷ Pawb. All the children who’ve visited have been very excited with what they’ve seen and there will be many more visits like this to come once we are up and running.”

Lead Member for Education, Cllr Phil Wynn, said: “This is a very exciting time for Wrexham and I believe this new facility is going to become an invaluable resource for our local children. It’s bringing world class arts and culture to their doorstep and there is certainly a real buzz building up as we wait for work to be completed.”

Tŷ Pawb opens officially to the public from April 2.

  • Don’t let alcohol spoil your Six Nations!

Don’t let alcohol spoil your Six Nations!

The Six Nations championship is just around the corner. The first match kicks off with Wales playing Scotland on Saturday February 3rd at 2.15pm. You might be planning on heading to Wrexham to watch the rugby – which is fantastic! We want to ensure that everyone who does head into town has a safe and enjoyable time.

Therefore, we want to remind you that too much alcohol can turn a great night into a bad one. You can end up going home early, getting into trouble or getting hurt.

We are encouraging people to cut back on how much they drink at home before going out – so-called ‘pre-loading’ or “prinking” – as well as how much they consume when visiting bars, pubs and clubs in the town.

Plenty of people enjoy going out having a few drinks, but if you fail to recognise when it’s time to call it a night, a few drinks becomes too many drinks, your judgement can become skewed and you’re more likely to behave badly or get injured.

GET SNAPPY – FOLLOW US ON SNAPCHAT.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “This is about reducing the strain on public services such as the police, ambulance staff and hospitals at a time when they are already under massive pressure.

“Alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour makes for a poor night-time economy and pub scene. Anything we and our partners can do to look at the causes of it and encourage people to curb it before it becomes a problem is a great help.”

Inspector Paul Wycherley said, “The #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign isn’t aimed at those who drink responsibly – it’s there to help identify the minority of people who have had too much alcohol and could end up being a danger either to themselves or others.

“People need to ask themselves whether they want their night to end early because they’ve been refused entry to a bar due to them having consumed too much alcohol too early.”
“Drink sensibly and enjoy watching the rugby with friends. Otherwise, you may ruin their night out too if they have to take you home early.”

Wrexham Council works in partnership with North Wales Police, Public Health Wales, the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), the Area Planning Board, Glyndwr University and Coleg Cambria to deliver the #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign.
