  • Want to help the homeless? Read more here

Want to help the homeless? Read more here

You’ll likely have heard of some of the news around homelessness in Wrexham.

The current use of the Groves is well-known, and we know that people want to do what they can to help out.

Some people have already set up collections of supplies, food and money to support the vulnerable people currently on the site.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

These people look hungry – can I give them food, supplies or money?

We completely understand and respect people’s drive to help out those in need.

After all, the service users and vulnerable people involved are human beings, and it’s only natural that people want to help.

But it is strongly advised that you not give food or money directly to those in need.

It might help them in the shorter term, but in the longer term, it means they have money to spend on drugs, which only locks them in to a dangerous and damaging habit – and nobody wants that.

And if they get money and food from members of the public, there’s no incentive for them to engage with agencies that can support them long-term.

Instead, consider giving what support you can to a charity which has the resources and expertise needed to help these individuals and tackle these problems in the long-term.

But I really want to help – isn’t there anything I can do?

Of course. Charities and similar organisations working in the area are always on the lookout for donors or volunteers, and will welcome support offered.

For more information on how you can really make a difference and to find out more about where support is needed, contact Ty Croeso, Grosvenor Road, Wrexham, LL11 1BT (Ty Croeso is run by The Wallich, a charity which supports the homeless in Wales).

  • How a derelict house got a new lease of life…

How a derelict house got a new lease of life…

A former derelict townhouse has been refurbished, ready to go on the market, thanks to a Wrexham Council initiative.

The property, in Rhosddu, had previously been in poor condition, with a number of internal and external issues which made it virtually uninhabitable.

A new kitchen and bathroom were installed as part of the refurbishment, as well other improvements such as re-plastered walls.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

    Help from Houseproud

The work to improve the property was coordinated by Wrexham Council, through the Houseproud scheme. The scheme helps homeowners to carry out improvements by arranging all the work on their behalf and ensuring that reliable tradesmen and contractors are used.

Help to fund the work was provided by a loan from the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places (VVP) fund. This is a project designed to help regenerate town centres, coastal communities and Communities First areas around Wales.

The refurbishment work was carried out by P.V. Groom Ltd.

Paul Martin (WCBC Housing Renewal Surveyor), Sion Wynne (WCBC Housing Partnership Officer), Cllr Terry Evans (Lead Member for Economy – Economic Development and Regeneration), Cllr David Griffiths (Lead Member for Housing)

    Money spent will be recylced

Local Councillor for Grosvenor, Cllr Marc Jones, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring this property up to good condition and it’s great news that it will soon be on the market.

“It’s important that we do everything possible to meet people’s housing needs in Wrexham so it’s very positive to hear that schemes like this are proving successful and that the money spent will be recycled to improve other empty or derelict properties in the future.”

Lead Member for Economy – Economic Development and Regeneration, Cllr Terry Evans, said: “This is a great example of how Vibrant and Viable Places funding can help make a real difference in our local communities. It’s allowed us to fund improvement work which may not have been possible otherwise and it now means we have a home in very good condition, ready to go on the market.”

Lead Member for Housing, Cllr David Griffiths, said: “The Houseproud scheme really does offer a great service for any homeowners looking for a safe, easy way to get those essential jobs done professionally and with the minimum of fuss. I’m pleased to see it has achieved such great results here and that we’ve been able to transform this property.”

  • If an election was called tomorrow could you vote?

If an election was called tomorrow could you vote?

We’re about to start sending out forms asking you to check and update the information on the electoral register.

We call this the “Annual Canvass” and it’s a really important exercise to make sure that anyone who isn’t on the register can get their names on on it quickly. You mightn’t be on there because you’ve recently moved house or have just turned 18. Whatever the reason if you aren’t on the register you can’t vote.

As soon as you receive the form please check the details. You then have two options:

    • If all the details remain the same visit www.householdresponse.com/wrexham, call 0800 197 9871 or text NOCHANGE followed by both parts of your security code to 80212 – standard charges will apply.

    • If the details need to be updated or if someone needs to be added or removed you should visit www.householdresponse.com/wrexham and make the necessary changes. Once this is done you should register new people on www/gov.uk/register-to-vote. You will need to have your National Insurance Number available. If you are unable to register online you will be sent an Invitation to Register form which you should complete. Once this is done you will be registered to vote.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

Research by the independent Electoral Commission showed that home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. 94% of people who have been at their property for more than sixteen years will be registered compared to 30% of people who have lived in an address for less than one year.

Private renters are also far less likely to be registered than those who own their property outright with 95% of home owners in Wales on the electoral register compared to 51% of private renters.

Dr Helen Paterson, Returning Officer, said:

“It’s really important that you respond as soon as possible so we can make sure we have the right details on the electoral register. We’re not expecting to go to the polls again for some time but, as has happened earlier this year, an election can be called at any time so please get on the register now by completing the form and returning it as soon as possible.”

It’s also a legal requirement to give the information asked for in the Annual Canvass – even if you have no changes to make. There is the possibility that you could be fined up to £1,000 for not doing anything so please open the form as soon as it arrives and do what’s required.
