  • Important information for dog owners in Wrexham

Important information for dog owners in Wrexham

If you’re a dog owner – and we know there’s lots of you out there – you should be aware of the restrictions that are in place across Wrexham when you’re out with your dog.

They’re there to protect you and your dog and members of the public who aren’t dog owners.

If you take your dog to one of our country parks they dog can run around free and have a great time but they should be on the lead when they’re in the car parks and Visitor Centres. This makes sense and protects you and your dog from harm.

If you dog is running free though in our parks and causing distress or nuisance to others though you must put it back on the lead when asked to do so by an authorised officer who can be an Enforcement Officer or Park Ranger.

GET INSTANT NEWS AND INFO FROM WREXHAM COUNCIL WITH MYUPDATES.

If you’re with your dog on the public footpaths and highways your dog should be on a lead at all times.

Dogs aren’t allowed on bowling greens, marked sports pitches and fenced children’s play areas, skate parks, tennis courts and multi use games areas.

“Pick up the poo or a £100 fine for you”

We wouldn’t want you to get fined for not picking up your dog’s poo so please make sure you take a bag with you whenever you’re out with your dog so you don’t get caught out.  It is an offence not to pick it up and some irresponsible dog owners have been caught and fined for it.

The restrictions are part of the Public Spaces Protection Order  which came into force earlier this year following public consultation which showed strong support for control of dogs in certain areas of our parks and visitor centres.  They apply all over the county borough and are clearly signposted in our parks and public areas.

“more owners now picking up after their dogs”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said:

“The new measures have been in force since March and have been largely well received by dog owners and non-dog owners.  We’ve kept them simple so there shouldn’t be any confusion about where dogs can and can’t go and I think they allow for dogs to be exercised properly and responsibly.  Picking up after a dog has fouled is and always has been our main area of concern and I am pleased to say that since we started fining more for this particular offence officers are reporting more owners are now picking up after their dogs.”

If you don’t stick to the measures in place you could be fined so please make sure you’re familiar with them when you’re out and about with your four legged friend.

  • Are you willing to risk a £50,000 fine?

Are you willing to risk a £50,000 fine?

Let’s face it we all have rubbish that we need to dispose of and that’s why most of us either use our household waste bin or if we have too much we take it to the household recycling centre.

There are some of you out there though that think it’s OK to leave it in or around our litter bins.  They are meant for just that “litter”, stuff that people need to dispose of when they’re out and about like a crisp packet or empty can.

“litter bins are not for business waste”

Litter bins are not meant for dumping general rubbish or, what’s happening more and more is some businesses have also taken to using them for their shop waste.  Litter bins are not for business waste.  Businesses should have a trade contract to safely remove their rubbish and our enforcement teams will be speaking to one or two who have been identified to make sure they don’t carry on doing this.

    “It’s lazy and unacceptable”

Cllr David A Bithell Lead Member for Environment and Transport said:

“Unfortunately this problem is increasing which means our resources are taken up by removing rubbish from businesses and householders who cannot be bothered to take it to our recycling sites of dispose of it in their own household bin.

“There are no more excuses.  Facilities are available for people to use rather than dump on the side of a litter bin which is lazy and unacceptable. Most of the general public use the facilities available or recycle their waste in a responsible manner,  what’s become more concerning is that some businesses are also doing the same instead of having a contract for disposing of their waste correctly  We are having a particular problem in Rhosddu and Smithfield areas at the moment and I have asked our team to pay particular attention to these areas.

“Our Enforcement Team are taking a hard line in tackling this problem and will not hesitate to prosecute those who abuse the law and a fine of up to £50,000 can be issued if people are caught.”

Household Recycling Centres are available at three sites in the county borough, Bryn Lane on Wrexham Industrial Estate, Brymbo and Plas Madoc.  You can find more about them here

At the Bryn Lane site there is a Recycling shop run in partnership with Nightingale House.

  • A statement on the fire safety of our external wall insulation systems

A statement on the fire safety of our external wall insulation systems

As part of the ongoing drive to improve council housing across the county borough, we’d like to further reassure tenants that the external wall insulation we’re using complies with safety standards.

Following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower, councils across the UK faced questions about the type of materials they were using.

Wrexham Council would like to further reassure tenants and residents that the external wall insulation we install has been subject to in-depth testing and complies with British Standards and current Building Regulations.

    Independent fire safety tests

We use two types of external wall insulation system, depending on the type of building.

These are both insulated render/brick slip systems, designed for low-rise buildings, rather than the ventilated rain-screen system used to refurbish Grenfell Tower.

We have recently consulted with the two manufacturers which supply external wall insulation systems to the council.

They have given us further reassurance that both systems have passed full, independent fire-safety tests.

    Extensive modernisation programme

We are currently continuing with the external wall insulation programme across the county borough.

The work is being carried out in stages and will be completed by 2020.

The insulation is being installed on non-traditional properties such as steel-framed and timber houses.

These types of buildings are generally harder and more expensive to heat than cavity-wall insulated, brick-built houses.

External wall insulation is designed to improve the energy-efficiency of the properties and make them cheaper for our tenants to heat, as well as extend the lifetime of the buildings by protecting their structures from the elements.

This work is part of the council’s extensive modernisation programme to ensure we achieve the Welsh Government’s Welsh Housing Quality Standard.

“I get to work all over the county borough..”

A recently recruited joiner explains what he enjoys about working for the Repairs Service:

“My job involves going out to council properties and I work on all kinds of joinery jobs such as door frames, locks, windows, staircases and full kitchen installations in void properties. I applied for a job with the Council because I knew they had a good reputation as a well-run organisation and I’d get a chance to learn more skills and further my career prospects.
