Ysgol Cae’r Gwenyn visited by naturalist Iolo Williams

The school based on Prince Charles Road was formerly known as Wrexham Early Years Centre-but is now known as Ysgol Cae’r Gwenyn (translated from Welsh to English this means field of the bee’s).

In opening the new extension Iolo Williams said …“What I have heard is that this is a very special school…and what you have done here is excellent, it lifts my heart, you have combined two things that are very important to me in combining the use of the Welsh language for the name and wildlife…when I walked in I was told that you already have this wildlife area here, I think that’s fantastic because schools like this and us as individuals, we have to do everything we possibly can to help our wildlife, particularly to help our bees…I’m genuinely delighted to come here and privileged that you have asked me to come and open this.”

Headteacher Rhian Hughes said: “It was a bit of a pipe dream to have Iolo here to officially open our new school extension and launch our new name, so having him here today is absolutely wonderful. “We’re really proud of our school and our achievements. “We have a rewilding area in our school garden that Iolo was very impressed with and keen to explore. “We’re so grateful to Iolo for taking the time to visit us. It made our celebration extra special.”

Ysgol Cae’r Gwenyn Chair of Governors Jane Howells said – “We’re a lovely school and now have a fabulous new extension and name. “We have fantastic pupils, staff and parents and really are like a family here.”

Lead Member for Education Cllr Phil Wynn said: “I’d like to thank Iolo Williams for attending to officially open Ysgol Cae’r Gwenyn’s extension and wildlife area. The school extension and garden will be of huge benefit for pupils for many years to come.

  • 8 Green Flags Continue to Fly High across Wrexham’s Green Spaces

8 Green Flags Continue to Fly High across Wrexham’s Green Spaces

We’re pleased to say that once again eight areas in Wrexham have retained their coveted Green Flag Award.

Flags are awarded for areas that have excellent visitor facilities, high environmental standards and commitment to delivering great quality green spaces.

Acton Park, Alyn Waters Country Park, Bellevue Park, Ponciau Banks Park, Tŷ Mawr Country Park and Wrexham Cemetery along with community award winners Maes y Pant and Plas Pentwyn will all be flying their flags for the next 12 months.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said, “Once again we are very pleased to share the good news about our beautiful country parks and green areas. It’s a huge credit to staff and the volunteers who spend many hours ensuring they remain in excellent condition for the thousands of visitors they receive every year.

“Their work is particularly appreciated this year following several storms in February that caused considerable damage to trees and a huge check and clean up followed to ensure areas remained safe and attractive for visitors.”

“Ten of our country parks are also protected for future generations under the Open Green Spaces initiative operated by Fields in Trust which ensures they will remain areas the public can enjoy for generations to come.”

The Green Flag Award programme is delivered in Wales by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, with support from Welsh Government. Independent green space experts volunteered their time to judge applicant sites against eight strict criteria, including biodiversity, cleanliness, environmental management, and community involvement.

A full list of award winners can be found on the Keep Wales Tidy website www.keepwalestidy.cymru
