  • Help with childcare costs for working parents of 3 to 4 year olds

Help with childcare costs for working parents of 3 to 4 year olds

Most working parents of 3 or 4 year old children could be getting government help with childcare costs.

Under the Childcare Offer for Wales, you could claim 30 hours of early education and childcare in Wales a week for up to 48 weeks of the year. It aims to make life a little bit easier for parents by offering help with childcare costs.

The offer has already helped parents from all over Wales to return to work, increase their hours or work more flexibly.

Whatever the offer means for you and your family, don’t miss out on your share of government help with childcare.

Renew your green bin for 2022/23 now – collections begin from September!

Applications for the Childcare Offer For Wales are open right now across Wales.

If you are a childcare provider, you can find information and guidance on the Welsh Government website.

    What’s included in the offer?

The Welsh Government Childcare Offer for Wales means that most working parents of 3 to 4 year olds can now claim funds towards the cost of childcare.

This means 30 hours of early education and childcare in Wales for eligible parents.

The 30 hours is made up of a minimum of 10 hours early education a week and a maximum of 20 hours a week of childcare.

It is available for 48 weeks of the year, meaning that the offer can help with childcare cover for some of the school holidays.

Find out more about the Childcare Offer for Wales and apply here.

Playwork sessions are most suitable for 5-12 year olds, but all ages are welcome. Under 5s must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Parents are welcome to stay if they wish. Children over 5 are able to attend independently, but we require a registration form to be completed by an adult at the 1st session they attend.

Sessions vary depending on the site, the weather and what the children want to do that day. Sessions usually get messy so we recommend old clothing and dressing suitably for the weather. All our sessions are outdoors and most do not have access to toilet facilities.

Play sessions are not a substitute for childcare and it’s the parent’s responsibility to make arrangements with their child regarding pick up/permissions to leave site etc.

If children require additional support to access the sessions, we offer the inclusion project. Forms can be completed online for this service & a member of the team will be in touch with the family to arrange support. https://www.wrexham.gov.uk/service/childrens-social-care/play-and-youth-support-team

  • Progress report on our plans to be carbon zero by 2030

Progress report on our plans to be carbon zero by 2030

Our Decarbonisation Plan was approved in May 2021 and an update on progress will be given to the Homes and Environment Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday 20 July.

The Plan focusses on four key themes (Buildings, Transport and Mobility, Land Use and Procurement) as well as some higher level actions which are key to our response to addressing the climate emergency.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Officers have continued to work at pace to ensure we remain well placed to deliver our commitments as part of the Plan and also meet the national and regional challenges and targets set.

Whilst some of the work remains challenging due to gaps in available technology such as a ready supply of suitable replacements for fossil fuelled heavy goods vehicles and the legislation required to address such things as Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure on streets, there are some key activities and building blocks that have already started to ensure our structure, policies, strategies and services all consider the carbon impact – of our activity or our carbon impacts?

The amount of work associated with decarbonising our services and also acting as a lead to the broader decarbonisation aspirations for Wales has should not be underestimated.

However, there are some key activities and building blocks that we have already begun to develop that will ensure we are ready for change.

The report shows our progress against 5 points which are key to our ensuring we reach carbon zero with some additional updates provided in the appendices.

    • Working with partners
    • Carbon baselining, monitoring and evaluation
    • Council priority, governance and accountability
    • Elevating decarbonisation in our decision making, and evaluating impacts of Council decisions
    • Defining workstreams and detailed action plans for each of four themes

Cllr David A Bithell, Deputy Leader and Climate Champion, said, “We’ve made good progress with establishing the framework for achieving carbon zero by 2030. We’ve also installed EV charging points at several locations across the county borough and invested in ensuring our buildings are energy efficient.

“But there’s still hurdles to jump as we move forward and we will continue to work to improve and establish energy efficiencies in our working practices and plans.”

You can take a look at the report here and watch the Homes and Environment Scrutiny Committee here.

  • Take care in the extreme heat

Take care in the extreme heat

Guest Article – Public Health Wales

Experts at Public Health Wales are warning people to take extra care in the extreme heat that is forecast over the next few days.  Temperatures are expected to reach the early to mid-thirties by Monday in some parts of Wales.

Very hot weather that lasts for a few days, or more, can cause dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  It’s very important to look after children, the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. Check in regularly with loved ones, friends, family and neighbours.

It is advised to make changes to your usual routines to cope with the extreme heat.  This includes avoiding strenuous activity in the middle of the day when the sun is at its hottest, drinking plenty of water and wearing a hat, sun cream and light coloured, loose clothing, ideally with long sleeves. Keep rooms cooler by closing blinds and curtains and closing windows.

Dr Sarah Jones, Consultant in Environmental Public Health at Public Health Wales said: “We are not used to extreme heat in Wales, so it is important that people don’t just treat it like another hot day. You should take extra care to follow the health advice to protect yourself and others.”

Think carefully before you undertake activities and always plan ahead. If you are running an outdoor event, make sure you have done a risk assessment that includes the extreme weather.

Young children find it difficult to regulate their body temperature, so take care to keep them cool.  Don’t cover babies’ prams or buggies with blankets or cloths – this prevents air circulating and can make it hotter for them.  If little ones sleep in a room that is difficult to cool, use lighter bedding and clothing and open the door and a window, if it is safe to do so.

If you feel dizzy, weak, anxious or have intense thirst and headache during the hot weather, tell someone and take the following action.

    • Move to a cool place as soon as possible
    • Drink some water or fruit juice to rehydrate
    • Rest immediately in a cool place if you have painful muscular spasms (particularly in the legs, arms or stomach after sustained exercise during very hot weather) and drink milk or fruit juice
    • Medical attention is needed if heat cramps last more than one hour
    • Consult your doctor if you feel unusual symptoms or if symptoms persist

It’s important to know the symptoms of heatstroke.  Call 999 if you think someone has heatstroke, as it is a medical emergency. If you are concerned about any symptoms you, or someone you know are experiencing, contact your GP or visit NHS 111 Wales to check your symptoms.

    Symptoms of heatstroke:

    • Feeling unwell after 30 minutes of resting in a cool place and drinking plenty of water
    • Not sweating, even while feeling too hot
    • A high temperature of 40c of above
    • Fast breathing or a shortness of breath
    • Feeling confused
    • A fit (or seizure)
    • Unconsciousness
    • Not responsive not

The hot temperatures may make it tempting to jump into rivers, lakes and other water, but the water may still be very cold and there is a danger of suffering cold-water shock.

If you do get into trouble in the water, remember to #FloatToLive. The dangers of drowning are also higher if people have been drinking or taking drugs.

More information about extreme heat is available on our extreme hot weather pages.
