All pupils were given a work book to complete and took turns to introduce themselves and ask questions in Welsh. The day formed part of a unit in GCSE Welsh and provided supporting evidence towards the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification ‘use of the Welsh language.’

Siwan Jones from Siop Siwan speaking to students

Curriculum Leader for Welsh at Rhosnesni High school, Meinir Tomos Jones said: “Providing opportunities for students to speak Welsh within a range of real-life contexts is integral to our Welsh provision at Ysgol Rhosnesni. “Hosting a Welsh language careers fair ensures that Ysgol Rhosnesni students practise their Welsh, a key employability skill, within a formal setting with local employers; this instils confidence and gives them an advantage as they enter a competitive employment market.

Welsh language officer at Wrexham County Borough Council Stephen Jones said: “Pupils gained a good insight into the important role that the Welsh language plays in people’s daily lives and in the workplace. This event also demonstrates how being able to speak Welsh can boost employability.

Business Engagement Adviser (Wrexham) for Careers Wales Lesley Lloyd said: “The event at Rhosnesni High School gave young people exposure to many more insights about people’s career ‘journeys’ and shared valuable information about bilingual skills in the world of work and the opportunities using the Welsh language may bring.  “An indicator of the interest, commitment and satisfaction made by the supporting organisations is conveyed in their enthusiasm to participate in future Welsh in the workplace events at Wrexham schools.”

TfW are spending £800 million on new trains throughout their network and the Class 197 will be the first of the brand-new stock to enter service in North Wales before the end of this year.

Providing an increase in capacity, reduced emissions and enhanced comfort onboard, these trains will allow TfW to run faster and more frequent services to key routes including to destinations such as Holyhead, Fishguard and Liverpool.

Offering leather seats, modern air conditioning systems, wider doors and customer information screens, the new trains will transform the customer experience. They’ve also been fitted with electronic charging points and disability features for those with limited mobility.

Cllr David A Bithell, Deputy Leader with responsibility for strategic transport, said, “I welcomed the opportunity to see first-hand these very impressive trains.

“It’s great to see such investment in Wales and to see such commitment to upgrading services for customers across Wales and the borders by Transport for Wales.

“I’m sure passengers will appreciate the improvements when they come into service in the area later in the year.”

Alexia Course, TfW’s Director of Transport Operations, said: “At Transport for Wales we’re continually moving forward with our transformational plans to improve public transport for the people of Wales and the borders.

“The Class 197s on show at Chester railway station today will be an important part of the transformation of the Wales and Borders network, and when they enter service, they will enable us to run more services and carry more customers in comfort.

“The construction of our new trains has been four years in the making, and customers and colleagues are incredibly excited to welcome passengers onto them from later this year.

“It’s also important to recognise that these trains have been made in Wales at the CAF factory in Newport and the building of them has provided jobs and supported the local economy”.

The Class 197s will be operating across wales and the borders including Cardiff-Holyhead and the Borderlands Line (Wrexham-Bidston)

  • 323,700 tax credits customers have one month left to renew

323,700 tax credits customers have one month left to renew

    Guest article – HMRC

323,700 customers are yet to renew their tax credits ahead of the deadline, with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reminding them to do so by 31 July – or their payments will stop.

Tax credits help working families with targeted financial support – so it’s important that customers renew before the deadline to ensure they don’t miss out on money they’re entitled to.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Customers can renew their tax credits for free via GOV.UK or the HMRC app.

Renewing online is quick and easy. Customers can log into GOV.UK to check on the progress of their renewal, be reassured it’s being processed and know when they’ll hear back from HMRC.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said:

“There’s just one month to go for our tax credits customers to renew. It’s easy to do online or on the HMRC app – search ‘tax credits’ on GOV.UK.”

Customers choosing to use the HMRC app on their smartphone can:

    • renew their tax credits
    • make changes to their claim
    • check their tax credits payments schedule, and
    • find out how much they have earned for the year

HMRC has released a video to explain how tax credits customers can use the HMRC app to view, manage and update their details.

If there is a change in a customer’s circumstances that could affect their tax credits claims, they must report the changes to HMRC. Circumstances that could affect tax credits payments include changes to:

    • living arrangements
    • childcare
    • working hours, or
    • income (increase or decrease)

The UK Government has recently announced a Cost of Living Payment of £650, payable in two separate lump sums of £326 and £324, for households receiving certain benefits or tax credits, to help with the cost of living. If tax credits only, they are eligible for each payment. HMRC will contact them and issue payments automatically, with the first being made by the autumn. Customers do not need to contact HMRC or apply for the payment.

More information on the Cost of Living Payment, including eligibility, is available on GOV.UK.

Tax credits are ending and will be replaced by Universal Credit by the end of 2024. Many customers who move from tax credits to Universal Credit could be financially better off and can use an independent benefits calculator to check. If customers choose to apply sooner, it is important to get independent advice beforehand as they will not be able to go back to tax credits or any other benefits that Universal Credit replaces.

HMRC is urging customers never to share their HMRC login details. Someone using them could steal from the customer or make a fraudulent claim in their name. HMRC is also warning people that if someone contacts them saying that they are from HMRC and wants the customer to transfer money urgently or give personal information, they should never let themselves be rushed. The department urges people to take their time and check HMRC’s advice about scams on GOV.UK.

  • The story of the lost luggage and the library book

The story of the lost luggage and the library book

The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Wrexham Library building.

We asked if you could send us your stories, items and memorabilia and we just had to share this one from library member, Bethan Rogers.

If you’ve ever lost your luggage you’ll know it is really stressful, and you worry if you’ll be able to get it back.

Did you ever think the library could come to the rescue? It didn’t cross Bethan’s mind…but this is how she was reunited with her luggage after losing it on a train travelling to Cardiff from her home town of Wrexham.

Renew your green bin for 2022/23 now – collections begin from September!

“I was on my way to Cardiff for an overnight stay and when I got onto the train I put my small silver suitcase in the luggage rack and took a seat not far away.

“Looking out of the window as we left one of the stations, I remember seeing a lady walking away from the train and thinking ‘Oh she has the same suitcase as me!’, but little did I know that it was actually MY suitcase she was walking away with.

“When it was my time to get off the train I went to where I had left my case, to find it gone. The only case left in the rack was a similar-sized, brown case.

“I started to panic and told one of the guards. They said I needed to report it at the desk as stolen, which I did. Then, since I had no luggage, contact lenses, or toiletries I got back on the train and came home again.

“The very next morning I had a phone call from Wrexham Library. They asked if I had lost a suitcase as a very kind lady had dropped it off at the library in Wrexham for me!

“Luckily, I had taken my library book with me and when the lady discovered she had picked up the wrong case she looked inside and found it. She rang Wrexham Library and they tracked me down!

“I never leave home without a book and I have never been so relieved to have been a Wrexham library member and an avid reader!”

If you have a story, photos or memorabilia about Wrexham library, please let us know so we can include it in our 50th anniversary celebration later this year. Contact the library on 01978 292090, library@wrexham.gov.uk or you can call in to you local library.

  • £45,000 awarded for development of Football Museum in Wrexham ⚽

£45,000 awarded for development of Football Museum in Wrexham ⚽

We’ve received the fantastic news that we’ve been awarded a £45,000 development grant  to progress plans for the  Museum of Two Halves – the Football Museum for Wales by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The award offers us the opportunity to secure a further grant of over £2 million to complete the project.

This means the plans to refurbish the Grade 2 listed Wrexham Museum building to be both a local history museum and a nationally styled football museum with improved facilities and new off-site collections store can now move forward with confidence.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

The grant will help the project team to develop its plan of events, activities and learning programmes that will ensure the new museum will serve not just communities across Wrexham County Borough, but also throughout Wales.

The new Football Museum galleries will provide a permanent display space for the every growing Welsh Football Collection for the first time since it was established in 2000.

The two part museum will see the whole two storey building brought back into use increasing its potential as a hub for learning, enjoyment and well-being attracting an estimated 80,000 visitors annually.

Cllr Paul Roberts, Lead Member for Partnerships and Community Safety, said, “This is brilliant news for Wrexham and I look forward to receiving updates on progress and to eventually enjoying visiting the Museum of Two Halves – The Football Museum for Wales and the new Wrexham Museum.”

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council said, “Once again we have reason to celebrate in Wrexham and this excellent news is especially welcome. I would like to thank all the staff involved in bringing the project this far and also the National Lottery Heritage Fund for their recognition of the football sporting heritage in Wales and here in Wrexham – the spiritual home of football.”

Andrew White, Director of the National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales said, “We’re excited to award this development grant to the Museum of Two Halves – the Football Museum for Wales. This investment will allow the Wrexham County Borough Council to develop a plan for the project that they can pitch to us for further funding to deliver on the dream.”

Ian Bancroft, the Chair of the steering group for the project added “The new galleries will capture the passion, the emotion and the experience that football fans have felt for the game ever since the Football Association of Wales (FAW) was formed in 1876 at Wrexham’s Wynnstay Arms Hotel.

“The timing of the project could not be better with the FAWs 150th anniversary in 2026 and the recent qualification of the national football team for the World Cup.”

  • Get help with summer holiday childcare costs

Get help with summer holiday childcare costs

    Guest Article: HMRC

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is reminding thousands of parents and families in Wales not to miss out on financial support that can help pay for childcare during the summer holidays.

Through Tax-Free Childcare, families can receive up to £2,000 a year per child – or £4,000 if their child is disabled – to put towards the cost of childcare. And it is available for children aged up to 11, or 17 if the child has a disability. The money can help towards the cost of holiday clubs, before and after-school clubs, childminders and nurseries, and other approved childcare schemes.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

The government will pay 20% of childcare costs by topping up the money paid into a Tax-Free Childcare account. This means for every £8 paid into the online account, families will automatically receive an additional £2 in government top-up.

More than 13,575 families in Wales used Tax-Free Childcare in March 2022 – the highest number of families recorded using the scheme since it was launched in April 2017 – but thousands more could be missing out. Research published earlier this year by HMRC estimated that about 1.3 million families could be eligible for this government support.

Parents and carers are being urged find out more about Tax-Free Childcare via the Childcare Choices website.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said: “Tax-Free Childcare can make a big difference to families, helping with the bills for things like holiday clubs, nurseries, childminders and after school clubs. It’s easy to register – search ‘Tax-Free Childcare’ on GOV.UK.”

Helen Whately, HM Treasury’s Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said, “Tax-Free Childcare helps families with the cost of childcare bills but we know that thousands of parents could be missing out.

“That is why I’m encouraging families to sign up now and save on childcare costs.

“There are lots of fantastic holiday clubs and childcare providers to help working parents during the upcoming summer holidays, so now is the time to take advantage of this support.”

For thousands of families who use Tax-Free Childcare, the money they save each month on their childcare costs is money that goes back into their pockets. Accounts can be opened at any time of the year and can be used straight away, and money can be deposited at any time and used when needed. Any unused money that is deposited can be simply withdrawn at any time.

Caroline from Portsmouth uses Tax-Free Childcare to help pay for her children’s after school and holiday clubs and explains why she uses it. Caroline said:

“I’m a busy working mum with two children and I find Tax-Free Childcare is easy and straight-forward to use. I go on to the system every month and set the amount I need to pay to my childcare provider. The financial support definitely helps but I also like the flexibility and how Tax-Free Childcare helps me budget for my childcare costs.”

With the school summer holidays approaching, it is more important than ever that parents and carers are able to access the financial aid they qualify for. It can reduce their costs, help them to stay in work, or help them work more hours.

More than one million families in the UK are entitled to some form of government childcare support and the government is encouraging those eligible to not miss out on their entitlements. Families can find out what childcare support is best for them via Childcare Choices.

To ensure that parents get the childcare support they are entitled to, the government is launching an awareness raising advertising campaign this week.
