New artwork for Tŷ Pawb’s Wal Pawb

Wal Pawb is an annual commission of six artworks to be displayed across two Tri-Vision billboards within Tŷ Pawb.

The six new Wal Pawb artworks have been created by artist Alan Dunn. They are a “celebration of the hard working traders, community members and behind-the-scenes Tŷ Pawb staff.”

The six new designs have been developed over 12 months in collaboration with artists Natasha Borton and Meilir Tomos, Tŷ Pawb market traders, staff and visitors.

Alan Dunn said, “I started visiting Tŷ Pawb in July 2021 wanting to explore a kind of post-Covid desire to celebrate food and a return to ‘real’ socialising. From then to the final work, I was privileged to work closely with artists Natasha Borton and Meilir Tomos and through them I met a staggering range of people across Wrexham, from Tŷ Pawb market traders, through staff and visitors. I was immediately taken by the energy and feistiness of the (then) Town which really reminded me of my birthplace Glasgow and Liverpool where I’ve lived for over 25 years – no strict lines between artists, musicians, poets or community activists. I wanted to capture all this in just four words and six photographs!

One day I was sat having a coffee from Curry on the Go and I overheard someone say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and the whole project fell into place – we’d all create FOUR SUPERWORDS of Welsh, English, Portuguese and Polish that cross-checked food, music, poetry and all those little Wrexham stories that only a few will recognise. We wanted the designs to be equally bold and monumental, like record sleeves and billboards for all the bands we love, with dramatic lighting, rockstar poses and our final three ‘Sgt Pepper’ style tableaux that celebrate hard working traders, community members and behind-the-scenes Tŷ Pawb staff.”

  • Welsh Blood Service. Please Keep Giving Blood

Welsh Blood Service. Please Keep Giving Blood

Guest article – Welsh Blood Service

Local residents are being called upon to help patients in need by giving blood with the Welsh Blood Service.

Donations are still needed daily by hospitals to treat patients with a range of conditions, including mothers and babies during childbirth; cancer patients receiving chemotherapy as part of their treatment; and by patients involved in emergencies.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

The Welsh Blood Service has also experienced a sustained period of high demand from hospitals as they continue to reintroduce services such as routine operations that require blood products. This increase means more blood donors are needed to help meet these additional needs.

One donation has multiple uses as it can be split into three products red cells, platelets and fresh-frozen plasma, meaning one donation can save or improve up to three adults or six babies’ lives.

Across Wrexham, over 600 donations of blood and blood products are needed each month to provide care to patients at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

Appointments are available at three locations – St Margaret’s Church Wrexham, The Hand Hotel, Chirk and  Hafod Colliery Centre, Rhosllanerchrugog.

Alan Prosser, Welsh Blood Service Director, said, “Every day around 350 donations are needed to help the 20 hospitals in Wales we supply, including Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

“We’ve always had great support from our donors in the area but we’re urging more residents to consider becoming blood donors and supporting patients in need. We’ve managed to increase our capacity in the area and we’re hoping this will help make it easier for people to donate.

“We are particularly calling on existing O negative, O positive and A positive donors to come forward but if you are a new donor and don’t know your blood type don’t worry, please sign up and we’ll do that bit for you.”

“Last month, 352 potentially lifesaving donations were made in Wrexham.

“As a Service, we rely on the generosity of people living in Wales to provide vital donations to patients.

“By giving up just one hour of your time, you have a unique opportunity to make a difference to people in your community and beyond.

Additional safety measures are in place at all our donation sessions, all staff wear face masks and every item is cleaned between use.

Alan continued: “If you’ve never donated before, why not try something incredible this week – sign up to donate at one of the sessions in your local area and become a lifesaver.”

Crown festival celebrates Jubilee at St Giles Church

Guest article – The Church in Wales

A giant handmade replica of the St Edward’s Crown is the centre-piece of a Crown Festival at St Giles’ Church marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year.

The crown, which is suspended from the bell tower, is eight foot wide and has been decorated by members of the church congregation. A further 100 smaller crowns made by schools, community groups and the congregation are on display around the church.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

The St Edward Crown is the crown used at the moment of coronation. It was made for Charles II in 1661, as a replacement for the medieval crown which was thought to date back to the eleventh-century royal saint, Edward the Confessor.

The festival is open until the end of August.

The Vicar of St Giles, Canon Jason Bray, said, “The large St Edward Crown was made and decorated by members of the church community, but David Lambert who is a design and technology teacher from St Joseph’s Catholic and Anglican High School has been the prime mover.

“Other crowns have been made by children from St Giles’ Church in Wales Primary School, local Guides and Cubs groups, children from church, and talented members of the church community. They include a crown of thorns, knitted tea cosy crowns, and some very creative technology and history crowns from the school children.

“It all makes for a stunning spectacular in the church which we hope will attract many visitors, just like our Angel Festival earlier in the year.

  • Have you renewed your garden waste collections yet?

Have you renewed your garden waste collections yet?

It’s that time of year again! Residents can now pay for their garden waste to be collected between September 2022-September 2023.

Simply visit wrexham.gov.uk/gardenwaste before September to make your payment online. It’s the quickest and easiest way, and you get to do it at a time that suits you. Just make sure you’re signed up by September to avoid missing any collections.

The charge for 2022/23 remains frozen at £25 per green bin per year, and the service runs from Monday, September 5, 2022 until Friday, September 1, 2023.

If you paid for garden waste collections last year (2021/22), your green bin(s) will continue to be collected until September 2.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Environment, said: “We’re pleased to be able to freeze the cost of the service until September 2023. The £25 per green bin per year charge will keep the cost of the Wrexham service one of the lowest in England and Wales. Residents can renew from Monday, June 27, and will need to make sure they have paid for the 2022/23 service by September to avoid missing any collections once the current service expires.”

Renew your green bin for 2022/23 now – collections begin from September!

    Please pay online where possible

The easiest way to pay for the service is online at wrexham.gov.uk/gardenwaste. If it isn’t possible for you to pay online you can call Streetscene to make a card payment, but you are likely to experience a wait if you do so. We highly recommend paying for the service online where possible.

    New stickers for 2022/23

Everyone who signs up will receive a sticker pack with a new sticker, which should be displayed on your bin lid from September.

We’re asking residents to NOT put their new sticker on their bin lid until the new service starts in September. Please continue to display your 2021/22 sticker until that service expires on September 2.

    No cash or cheque payments

In previous years, we’ve had a number of customers who attempted to pay for the service by sending cash and cheques to us. We must reiterate that we are unable to accept these payments.

I don’t want to renew the service – will you remove my garden waste bin?

Any unwanted garden waste bins can be removed on request. Once requested it may take a number of weeks for the bin to be collected. In the meantime, make sure your bin remains empty, accessible, but not left out causing an obstruction.

It may be worth keeping hold of your old garden waste bin for now because, if your garden waste bin has been removed and you change your mind in future, there is a charge for a new one.

What can I do with my garden waste if I do not want to pay for the collection service?

You can take your garden waste to one of our household waste recycling centres (free of charge). Alternatively, you could compost garden waste at home.
