  • #Wrecsam2025 UK City of Culture bid receives further support from the FAW

#Wrecsam2025 UK City of Culture bid receives further support from the FAW

Wales national football team and staff have been photographed showing their support for Wrexham’s bid to become City of Culture in 2025.

At the recent camp that saw Wales beat Austria 2-1 in a world cup qualifier as well as playing a friendly against the Czech Republic, players and staff took time out to pose for photos with the colourful Wrecsam bid logo.

    FA Wales have previously stated:

“The Football Association of Wales itself was founded at the Wynnstay Arms Hotel in Wrexham in 1876 – and the town has been an integral part in the development and success of Welsh football ever since.

Clubs in the town and the surrounding areas are rich in passion, history and tradition. The recent developments taking place both on and off the field will hopefully create an exciting and successful future and we as an association want to play our part.

On the behalf of all of us here at the Football Association of Wales, we wholeheartedly support your bid, and we look forward to working with you over the next few months (and beyond) to plan a number of events and opportunities to ensure that Wrexham is named UK City of Culture 2025.”

You can get more information on the bid by going to wrecsam2025.com as well as following the #Wrecsam2025 #tag on twitter

  • Warning on the dangers of late-night online shopping

Warning on the dangers of late-night online shopping

Guest article from the Competition & Markets Authority

A new poll of 2,000 UK adults has revealed that over half (54%) of late-night online shoppers said they had done so while drinking alcohol and more than 8 in 10 (86%) shopped while distracted watching TV, leaving them vulnerable to misleading sales tactics.

As the cost of living continues to increase, and with almost one-third of all retail purchases now taking place online, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has become increasingly concerned about the impact of “sneaky” sales practices on consumers.

The survey comes as part of the CMA’s new campaign The Online Rip-Off Tip-Off to help shoppers spot and avoid misleading online tactics, which could result in them being ripped off.

This latest phase of the campaign warns shoppers that such sales ploys can be even more effective at manipulating them if they shop at certain times of the day, or when they are in certain states of mind. And it advises all shoppers to be careful before they drink and click.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Initial research highlighted that misleading tactics are designed to play on behavioural biases, often without people realising that they are being manipulated. This means they can be even more effective when shoppers are distracted, hungry, or tired for example.

With 8 in 10 people who shop online late at night saying they do so, or have done so, while watching TV, and around three quarters saying the same about listening to the radio/music (69%) or scrolling on social media (70%), this latest poll highlights how easy it is to be unwittingly misled.

The CMA also warns that no one is immune. Its survey revealed that more than a third of Gen Z, dubbed the ‘digitally native’ generation, admit to being susceptible to online rip-offs. And they are the biggest night-time online shopping spenders, splurging £290 on average last month.

George Lusty, Senior Director for Consumer Protection, explained: “As the cost of living continues to rise, every penny we spend must count. We’re increasingly concerned about online businesses using sales tactics to push people into parting with their cash.

“And the time of day or mindset you’re in when shopping can make you more vulnerable to being unwittingly misled. Check out the CMA’s Online Rip-Off Tip-Off, which has been launched to help shoppers spot and avoid potential online rip-offs.”

4 common misleading online tactics are:

    • Subscription traps – misleading a customer into signing up to, and paying for, an unwanted subscription that can be difficult to cancel
    • Hidden charges – unexpected compulsory fees, charges or taxes being added when someone tries to make an online purchase
    • Pressure selling – a tactic used to give a false impression of availability or popularity of a product or service
    • Fake reviews – reviews that do not reflect an actual customer’s genuine opinion or experience of a product or service

Fronted by TV presenter and consumer champion Angellica Bell, the Online Rip-off Tip-Off campaign launched with a film depicting misleading online tactics in a real-life market, with the key message “you wouldn’t put up with it offline, so don’t do so online”.

The aim of the campaign is to make consumers aware of misleading online practices, understand the negative impact they can have and provide tips on how to avoid them. Find out more at www.gov.uk/ripoff-tipoff

  • Doorstep crime and scams awareness training in Wrexham

Doorstep crime and scams awareness training in Wrexham

Google ‘scams and fraud’ and you will receive nearly 74 million hits. The subject grows on an almost daily basis especially as criminals tweak their cons to facilitate a particular victim. Here in Wrexham, we are no different to other parts of the country – we too suffer at the hands of criminals to offences of fraud in one way or another.

But, Wrexham County Borough Council believes in enhancing protection for its community members and has engaged the help of a team to work in partnership with your local Trading Standards Officers and your local Police Officers.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Operation REPEAT (Reinforce Elderly Persons Education at All Times) is a structured programme of training sessions to health and social care staff, which includes volunteers, support workers, carers and professionals who have individual contact on a regular basis with members of the local community who are susceptible to doorstep crime and scams.

Health and social care professionals are some of the best placed people to monitor those at risk, as research suggests 80% of all such victims are already in receipt of health and social care services.

Starting this week a number of training sessions will take place here in Wrexham to cover both the town and rural communities. Working with our Trading Standards and Police Officers, Operation REPEAT will engage with our care organisations to enable their staff to be in a position to support and better safeguard our older vulnerable people from doorstep crime and scams.

Historically, doorstep crime and scam prevention was directed at the victims themselves, with the Police and other organisations using leaflets and meetings to pass advice onto older and vulnerable people. Unfortunately, leaflets are often discarded and those in need of the message may not have capacity to remember what they were told the previous day.

The principal aim of Operation REPEAT is to allow key messages to vulnerable clients to be continually reinforced on a daily or weekly basis by health and social care sector staff. By utilising the existing community workforce to deliver this advice, there is an increased awareness of these crimes within the community and a more targeted approach at prevention.

  • The Safe Places Scheme

    The Safe Places Scheme

This article is part of a series of blog articles being published this week in support of World Autism Acceptance Week 2022.

The Safe Places Scheme provides reassurance to people who may feel vulnerable when they go out, helping them to live a more independent lifestyle.  Knowing there are safe places in their community offering help if needed, helps people feel safer and more confident going out in their community.

    How does the scheme work?

Local shops, businesses and organisation sign up to become a “Safe Place”. A sticker is placed in the window or on a door of a Safe Place, identifying that help is available there.

If you are someone who may feel vulnerable while out, you can sign up to the scheme and get your own Safe Places card to carry with you. The card will show contact details for someone you trust so that a member of staff in a Safe Place can call them if you need help.

As well as calling the trusted contact person on your Safe Places card, members of staff at a Safe Place can:

      • Find you somewhere safe to wait and reassure you until the situation is resolved
      • Call the police or an ambulance if it is an emergency

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Alwyn Jones, Head of Service for Social Care said, “Safe Places is a National Scheme that Wrexham signed up to a few years ago. We are very lucky to have several Safe Places in Wrexham and we are extremely proud that we were the first county in Wales to adopt the scheme. Hopefully it will continue to grow from strength to strength, giving vital support to those that need it in our community.”

Apply for a Safe Places card

If you wish to use the Safe Places scheme you can fill out the application form. You’ll need to provide some details about yourself, along with the names and phone numbers of up to three trusted contacts (this is someone who can be called when you need help – it could be a family member, carer or friend).

Once you have sent your completed application, our Wrexham Safe Places team will explain how to use the scheme. You will receive a list of Safe Places in Wrexham and the Safe Places card with your chosen contacts numbers on, to carry when you are out and about.

  • Don’t abuse parking enforcement officers – they’re just doing their job, and you might end up in court

Don’t abuse parking enforcement officers – they’re just doing their job, and you might end up in court

Imagine this. There are no rules when it comes to parking. You can park anywhere, anytime. You can park wherever you like, for free.

    What would it be like?

Roads would get blocked, accidents would happen and people would get hurt. Individuals and businesses would suffer, and we’d all get fed-up pretty quickly.

That’s why parking enforcement officers are good guys. Ok…you might not think that if you’ve ever had a parking ticket, but they’re there to make sure people follow the rules and to prevent parking chaos.

They have a really tough job, and sometimes they get abused. Foul-language, insults and even physical threats.

It’s not fair, and Wrexham Council and its partners won’t tolerate it – as one person found out when they were taken to court recently for being aggressive to one of our officers.

They were found guilty and sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £107 in court costs.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

    An important role

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council says:

“Enforcement officers have a positive impact on our community, and without them we would all find life very difficult and frustrating.

“They help ensure people park sensibly and follow the rules, and keep our town centre flowing.

“We won’t tolerate anyone being abusive towards our enforcement officers, and will make every effort to liaise with the police and the courts to deal with aggressive behaviour.

“So please respect them as they go about their job. They play an important role in keeping our town centre safe, and deserve to be treated in a polite and civil way.”
