£175,000 secured to progress repairs to B5605 Newbridge Road

Funding of £175,000 from Welsh Government has been confirmed to progress the work needed to repair the extensive damage caused to the B5605 earlier this year during Storm Christoph.

As reported previously we have continued to work on the ground and with Welsh Government to provide the technical and assessment reports and establish costs to ensure this road is brought back into use as soon as possible.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

The funding will cover our preliminary, assessment and design costs.  The ground investigations have just completed and we await the options report.

Cllr David A Bithell Lead Member Environment and Transport said, “I am pleased we have secured funding from Welsh Government of £175k for the next stage of this process to develop a business case for all the options available to repair the road.

“We are currently carrying out geotechnical work and hopefully this will be complete by the end of December. We then need to consider options and design for work and will be submitting them to Welsh Government as soon as possible.

“We are aware of the extensive inconvenience and impacts this is having on local communities and businesses and hope to be in a position early in the new year to progress with options for repair work. We hope this will be fully funded following storm Christoph.”

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • City status benefits statement summarises the 10 key benefits for Wrexham

City status benefits statement summarises the 10 key benefits for Wrexham

A summary of the independent work for city status outlining the key benefits of city status is being shared with Councillors, partners and residents in advance of the decision that will be taken by the Council in December.

The statement identifies 10 key benefits that Wrexham could capitalise on if it becomes a city, including:

    1. Increased sense of local pride.
    2. A platform to promote Wrexham.
    3. Opportunities for local institutions and businesses to raise their profile and attract investment. e.g. University
    4. More potential to attract skilled and ambitious students, employees and investors to Wrexham. e.g. Hospital
    5. Opportunities for the community, infrastructure, and services to grow and develop more sustainably.
    6. A focus for future branding and marketing campaigns.
    7. Greater awareness of Wrexham’s history, culture and language – attracting more visitors and supporting the local economy.
    8. More potential to attract major projects.
    9. The ability to collaborate with Welsh and UK cities on specific city projects and initiatives.
    10. Increased expectations of ‘place making’ that in turn create more vibrant places to live, work and invest.

The statement has been published ahead of a key decision by Wrexham Council’s Executive Board on whether to submit a bid for city status and was part of the decision agreed at Council to promote the benefits as widely as possible.

You can read the full statement on Wrexham Council’s website.

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, says:

“The statement has been written by the experts appointed to look at city status as part of a wider piece of place shaping work and summarises the key benefits from their research. This statement provides all of us in Wrexham with a really valuable insight and short summary into the key benefits of becoming a city.”

Councillor David A Bithell, Deputy Leader of Wrexham Council, adds:

“The report makes it clear that city status would be part of a bigger place shaping picture, and one of many tools that will help strengthen community well-being, identity and pride in Wrexham.”

  • Stickers to remind residents to pay for garden waste collection service

Stickers to remind residents to pay for garden waste collection service

Residents who put their green bin out for collection but haven’t paid for the garden waste collection service won’t get their bin emptied and will instead have a sticker placed on it to remind them how they can sign up for the collections.

Have you had one of these stickers appear on your green bin recently? 👇

If you haven’t paid for the 2021/22 service, just head over to wrexham.gov.uk/gardenwaste and follow the simple instructions to pay.

The service charge has been frozen at £25 per bin and runs from the date you sign up until September 2, 2022, so it’s better to sign up sooner rather than later to get the best value. Simply put, the earlier you join, the more collections you’ll get.

“We don’t want these people to miss out on any collections”

Darren Williams, Chief Officer Environment and Technical, said: “We’ve introduced the stickers as a way to inform residents who haven’t paid, but are still putting their green bin out for collection, how to renew the service. Some probably haven’t realised that the new collection year started at the end of August and we don’t want these people to miss out on any collections. We want to try and give them the information how to pay and the stickers are a direct way for us to do this. Anyone yet to pay that wants the collections can visit wrexham.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call Streetscene to pay, and they will still get many months of collections for £25 if they sign up soon.”

Get over 9 months collections if you sign up soon

Autumn is always a popular time for gardening with leaves falling from trees and having dead plants from the summer to clear. If you didn’t get round to renewing in August, but now wish you had, please be aware it’s not too late to join!

If you sign up now, you can still get around 9 months of collections, whereas if you left it for a further month before signing up, you’d only get 8 months collections for the same price.

Please pay online if you can

Paying online is by far the easiest and most convenient way to sign up to the service, as you can do it any time you want and it only takes a couple of minutes.

If you’re unable to do this, you can call Streetscene to make a card payment, but please be aware that you’re likely to experience a wait if you do so.

Allow 10 days for your sticker

Residents who sign up for the service will be issued with a new sticker for 2021/22 collections, which will need to be displayed clearly on your bin lid. Please allow at least 10 working days to receive your new sticker pack from the date you sign up.

    Monthly collections Dec 2021-Feb 2022

Garden waste collections will run once a month from December 2021 to February 2022 for those who have paid for the service, with normal fortnightly collections resuming in March.

Reminder – green bin collections switch to monthly for winter period

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • Don’t get scammed by a Fly Tipper

Don’t get scammed by a Fly Tipper

Did you know that over 70% of fly-tipping incidents contain household waste, and over 40% of Wales residents are at risk of being scammed by a fly-tipper.

It’s usually by a “man in a van” who advertises on social media that for a very reasonable sum they’ll take your rubbish – many aren’t legally allowed to use the household recycling centres and resort to taking your money and fly tipping it around the county borough.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

We all have a “duty of care” to make sure that our waste is disposed of responsibly and safely and if any fly tipped waste is traced back to us we’ll be fined up to £300 or even prosecuted.

Many companies operate legally to take your waste and there’s an easy way to find out if the one you’re using is – ask to see their Registered Waste Carrier card.

You could also ask where your waste is going and request a receipt for the service you are paying for.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said, “There’s lots of responsible people out there who will take your waste and give you a good service. However, we should all be aware that this isn’t the case all the time and we should make sure that the person we hire to clear our waste is legally registered and isn’t a fly tipper.

“Let’s all care for our environment and make sure our money goes to properly registered and responsible companies.”

Remember CARE when booking a waste removal service:

    • Check for a registered waste carrier
    • Ask where their waste is going
    • Record the vehicle make and registration involved
    • Evidence the transaction by requesting a receipt

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • Supporting Carers Rights Day

    Supporting Carers Rights Day

Wrexham County Borough Council fund NEWCIS to deliver the carers service across Wrexham, and is working collaboratively to ensure as many carers as possible are reached, supported, and are aware of the rights they have as unpaid carers.

    Rights as an unpaid carer

Carers Rights Day (this year held on 25th November) is an annual campaign that aims to raise awareness of unpaid carers rights.

The Coronavirus pandemic has made it more important than ever for unpaid carers to be aware of their rights as access to services and juggling work and care has become much harder. NEWCIS (who provide support for unpaid carers across north east Wales) are committed to supporting carers through these difficulties.

    Make Yourself Known

This year the campaign has a new social media hashtag #MakeYourSelfKnown- following the hashtag should make it easier to find more information on carer rights, as well as the chance to explore events and activities associated with the hashtag.

NEWCIS get behind the campaign every year; and aim to empower carers with timely information and support.

Whether you are a new carer or have been caring for someone for a while, it is important that you understand your rights and are able to access the support that is available to you.

Making yourself known to NEWCIS will mean that you will receive relevant information, one to one support, training and counselling.

    Funeral planning and bereavement support

This year’s theme is ‘funeral planning and bereavement support.’ Not something that we usually talk about or like to think about-however if you make yourself known to NEWCIS they could help you feel less overwhelmed by offering support and advice should it be needed.

Cllr John Pritchard, Lead member for Health and Adult Social care said: “If you are a carer for someone, then knowing your rights is important. “NEWCIS can help you with support and information so please do make yourself known to them.”

  • Beware of Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals

Beware of Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals

As we approach Black Friday and Cyber Monday our Trading Standards officers are advising anyone buying online to be aware of the pitfalls that may turn out to be a disappointment or even worse unsafe.

Last year online retail sales in the UK hit a record £130.6 billion! It’s expected to remain high this year but not all line sellers are genuine and many are out to take your money for substandard or fake goods.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

There’s also many companies that increase prices before Black Friday and Cyber Monday in order to claim they’ve reduced them by a significant amount. You can check price trackers by using the Camel Camel Camel website or similar site to make sure you’re really getting a bargain.

There’s lots of other things that you can look out for especially scams where unscrupulous companies will use.

Here’s a few simple things to help keep you safe:

    • Don’t be taken in by promotion or discount offers shared on social media – these can look inviting, but often link to “copycat” websites so fraudsters can steal your details.
    • Look for reviews of the product or retailer/seller – and ask yourself whether or not they look genuine.
    • Are there lots of spelling or grammar mistakes on the website? If so, that could be a hint that the business is not professionally run.
    • Make sure the website has an encrypted address – this’ll show up if there’s a padlock symbol in the taskbar (where you type in the address), or if there’s an “s” at the end of the “http” part of the address. If so, this means that the website is using an encrypted system, which keeps your details secure.
    • Does the company have a landline number you can call if you have any problems?
    • Read the small print – notice if anything seems odd, repetitive or in incorrect English.
    • Don’t be tricked by an impossible bargain – if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.
    • Keep in mind that fraudsters exploit high demand – if shops run out of things like toys and games, crooks will step in and sell poor quality or imitation versions.
    • Don’t panic buy – just make a few common-sense checks like those above and make sure you’re not handing your details over to a criminal.

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, “The first question to ask yourself is, “Do I really need this item?” Recently published research by Which? shows that over half of shoppers regretted their Black Friday purchases last year. If you really do need that new TV or coffee maker be careful and follow the simple checks above to make sure your money is well spent and you are not disappointed.”
