    About the White Ribbon Campaign

White Ribbon UK is the leading charity working with men and boys to end violence against women. This year’s White Ribbon Campaign will see, thousands of people will take action and raise awareness to prevent violence before it starts.

#AllMenCan is their leading message this year. It was developed for them in March when the shocking murder of Sarah Everard brought women’s experience of men’s violence to the forefront of everyone’s minds.

It also opened up many conversations about men taking action and making a stand and many have gone on to make the White Ribbon Promise (Link https://www.whiteribbon.org.uk/promise) and will be wearing their White Ribbons to show their support for the campaign.

  • Hope House & Tŷ Gobaith launch biggest care fundraising appeal ever

Hope House & Tŷ Gobaith launch biggest care fundraising appeal ever

Guest article by Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith

A children’s hospice is asking people in North and Mid Wales, Shropshire and Cheshire to donate like never before as it aims to raise £500,000 in just 36-hours to fund its end of life care for children and families for a whole year.

Their Final Moments Matter campaign will run from 10am on Sunday, November 21 until 10pm on Monday November 22.

Already local businesses and key supporters have pledged £250,000 of support. This will be used as match funding for every donation made during the 36 hour period. Only if £250,000 is donated by the public will the match funding pledges be completely unlocked and the £500,000 raised.

Fundraising Director Simi Epstein said she really hoped the community would come together as one to embrace local families whose hearts were breaking and to help make sure they were not isolated in their pain and grief.

“At Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith we know that Final Moments Matter and that the last moments of a child’s life should be as precious as their first,” she said.

“That is why our mission is to make sure that no one faces the death of a child alone, so that every family facing the death of a child gets the very best care and support when and where they need it.

“We have been pledged £250,000 of match funding to enable us to reach our goal. But we need your help to unlock that cash.”

The fundraising campaign will be based online, with supporters asked to become ‘Team Leaders’ and spread the word by sharing messages and videos about the work of the hospices by social media, email and WhatsApp to inspire support from the people they know.

When Evan Williams from North Wales died suddenly in his sleep weeks before his 13th birthday, his mum Jane said the hospices were there for them.

“Evan had no illness at all. He was fit and healthy and he simply went to bed and died in his sleep,” she said.

“I found him when I went to wake him in the morning. It was a huge shock for us all. I can honestly say if we hadn’t had Hope House I don’t know what we would have done.”

If you would like to get involved in Final Moments Matter either by running a fundraising team or making a donation you can find more information at hopehouse.org.uk/fmm or call the Fundraising Offices on 01691 671671.

You can also follow Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith’s social media channels to follow the progress of Final Moments Matter.

The new play area is officially up and running following a launch event attended by Cllr Beverley Parry-Jones and Broughton Community Council, at the facility.

New play equipment including a multi-unit with slide and climbing wall, swings, spinning dish, spring see saw and park bench are included at the new facility as well as a space for informal play.

Cllr Beverley Parry-Jones said “It’s great to see this play area getting used by the local children. It’s an extremely welcomed facility in the community and I’m sure that it will be enjoyed for many years to come.”

The scheme was funded by a £30,000 Section 106 payment received from the Housing Developer to improve facilities for local residents.

Consultations and management was carried out by Wrexham County Borough Council in conjunction with Broughton Community Council who provided local feedback on which play facility they would like to see built for local children to enjoy.

The winning design was produced by HAGs-SMP and the equipment was installed by a local Wrexham firm ACE Play.

  • Doing some shopping online for Christmas? – Please check this out

Doing some shopping online for Christmas? – Please check this out

As we head into the final shopping hurdle before Christmas, chances are you’ll be looking to do a lot of your shopping online.

Wrexham’s Trading Standards team is advising shoppers to keep any eye on some basic online safety checks when buying goods or presents online – and the vast majority of them take just a few seconds to carry out.

Research from National Trading Standards shows more than two thirds of shoppers leave out key safety checks when shopping online – leaving themselves at risk of fraud.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

And nobody wants to put themselves at risk of losing money just before Christmas.

Some basic checks to keep yourself safe

If buying products from an online seller, there are a few basic things you can do to keep yourself safe from fraud.

    • Don’t be taken in by promotion or discount offers shared on social media – these can look inviting, but often link to “copycat” websites so fraudsters can steal your details.
    • Look for reviews of the product or retailer/seller – and ask yourself whether or not they look genuine.
    • Are there lots of spelling or grammar mistakes on the website? If so, that could be a hint that the business is not professionally run.
    • Make sure the website has an encrypted address – this’ll show up if there’s a padlock symbol in the taskbar (where you type in the address), or if there’s an “s” at the end of the “http” part of the address. If so, this means that the website is using an encrypted system, which keeps your details secure.
    • Does the company have a landline number you can call if you have any problems?
    • Read the small print – notice if anything seems odd, repetitive or in incorrect English.
    • Don’t be tricked by an impossible bargain – if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.
    • Keep in mind that fraudsters exploit high demand – if shops run out of things like toys and games, crooks will step in and sell poor quality or imitation versions.
    • Don’t panic buy – just make a few common-sense checks like those above and make sure you’re not handing your details over to a criminal.

Lots of on line retailers are far busier than usual because of Covid and quite a few have struggled to meet demand resulting in delays and mistakes and significant difficulty in getting a positive response.

Check on line reviews of web traders, especially if you have not used them before and they are not familiar to you.

Shop early to avoid chance of failure to deliver on time and give yourself time to respond if good don’t arrive or are unsatisfactory.

Where goods cost more than £100 using a credit card can give you extra protection in the event that things go wrong or, check what protection your bank can provide where you pay with a debit card.

If you think that any online or face-to-face seller is selling potentially dangerous goods, or that something you have purchased is making you feel suspicious, tell Citizens Advice by calling the Helpline to Users on 03454 04 05 06.
If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • Buy toys safely this Christmas

    Buy toys safely this Christmas

Many of you will be buying your Christmas gifts in the coming weeks but with the increase in online sales there’s an increased risk that you may not be buying safe or genuine toys.

Here’s a few tips to help you along:

Know who you are toys buying from

Wherever you are shopping, remember reputation matters. Is the seller widely recognised for safe and reliable toys?

Get as much information on the seller as you can, especially if you’re buying
    from an online marketplace.

Not everything sold on an online platform is supplied by them. If the actual
supplier is not based in the UK, you may face increased risks.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

Always read the warnings and instructions

Toys must be clearly marked with age restrictions, which are based on risks such as choking hazards.

    Always follow the age recommendations.

    Consider special needs

Children with special needs might be more vulnerable, so keep this in mind when shopping.

    Avoid toys with small parts

They can be a choking hazard.

    Look out for strangulation hazards

Loose ribbons on toys and costumes can pose risks to young children.

    Compare the sellers

Bargains may be too good to be true. Compare the toy’s price with other sellers. If it’s a fraction of the cost, it’s likely to be counterfeit.

    Check for button batteries

Ensure that any button batteries in a toy are safely behind a screwed down flap.

    Check for product recalls

You can check if the toy you’re buying has been recalled at productrecallcampaign.gov.uk

If you’re looking for a new career and want to help people in your community, a job in social care could be the right move.

  • Dining Out this Christmas? Look before you book!

Dining Out this Christmas? Look before you book!

If you’re planning that special Christmas meal with work colleagues, friends or family – we’re reminding you to ‘look before you book’.

Christmas is a time to enjoy good company and good food without worrying about food poisoning. But the truth is, you can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy the staff look or by how busy it is.

It’s the things you can’t see – like germs spread by bad hygiene practices – that you need to consider.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest – check the food hygiene rating.

The food hygiene rating tells you about hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. It’s really easy to check.

Just go online and check the Food Standards Agency website or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker.

The ratings are determined by our Public Protection officers, and run from 0-5, with a 5 rating meaning a very good level of food hygiene.

Food businesses in Wales are required by law to display their rating sticker following an inspection.

98 per cent of food businesses are rated 3 or better, so there are plenty of places with good standards and you can easily avoid taking your family to those not meeting the grade. Having the green and black sticker on display in the window and checking online for the rating will help you make a better informed choice.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member Communities and Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “It’s easy for people in Wrexham to check hygiene ratings online and choose a restaurant for their Christmas parties that takes food hygiene seriously.

“This is an important time for local businesses. A good food hygiene rating is something to be proud of, and it matters to consumers”.
