HMRC warns customers about Self Assessment tricksters

Guest Article – HM Revenue and Customs

As HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) prepares to issue emails and SMS to Self Assessment customers, the department is reminding them to be on their guard after nearly 800,000 tax-related scams were reported in the last year.

Fraudsters use Self Assessment to try and steal money or personal information from unsuspecting individuals. In the last year alone, HMRC has received nearly 360,000 bogus tax rebate referrals.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

The Self Assessment deadline is 31 January 2022 and customers may expect to hear from HMRC at this time of year. More than 4 million emails and SMS will be issued this week to Self Assessment customers pointing them to guidance and support, prompting them to think about how they intend to pay their tax bill, and to seek support if they are unable to pay in full by 31 January.

However, the department is also warning customers to not be taken in by malicious emails, phone calls or texts, thinking that these are genuine HMRC communications referring to their Self Assessment tax return.

    Scam email:

    HMRC

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said: “Never let yourself be rushed. If someone contacts you saying they’re from HMRC, wanting you to urgently transfer money or give personal information, be on your guard.

“HMRC will also never ring up threatening arrest. Only criminals do that.

“Scams come in many forms. Some threaten immediate arrest for tax evasion, others offer a tax rebate. Contacts like these should set alarm bells ringing, so if you are in any doubt whether the email, phone call or text is genuine, you can check the ‘HMRC scams’ advice on GOV.UK and find out how to report them to us.”

Criminals use emails, phone calls and text messages to try and dupe individuals, and often mimic government messages to make them appear authentic. They want to trick their victims into handing over money or personal or financial information.

Customers can report suspicious phone calls using a form on GOV.UK; customers can also forward suspicious emails claiming to be from HMRC to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk and texts to 60599.

HMRC has a dedicated team working on cyber and phone crimes. They use innovative technologies to prevent misleading and malicious communications from ever reaching the customer.

    Scam email:

    HMRC

Since 2017 these technical controls have prevented 500 million emails from reaching HMRC’s customers. More recently, new controls have prevented 90% of the most convincing SMS messages from reaching the public and controls have been applied to prevent spoofing of most HMRC helpline numbers.

HMRC is also reminding Self Assessment customers to double check websites and online forms before using them to complete their 2020/21 tax return. People can be taken in by misleading websites designed to make them pay for help in submitting tax returns or charging to connect them to HMRC phone lines.

Customers who are in any doubt about whether a website is genuine should visit GOV.UK for more information about Self Assessment and use the free signposted tax return forms.

Partnership working in Wrexham leads to simulator staying

Councillors and business leaders were at Xplore in Wrexham Monday, October 18, to celebrate the extended stay of the Tenstar simulator in Wrexham until March 2022.

The funding has been secured via the Welsh Governments’ Communities for Work Plus programme and it is hoped that it will be successful in closing the skills gaps experienced by local companies in logistics and warehousing. It may also encourage people to think about a career path that they hadn’t considered before and encourage women into an industry that is seen as one dominated by men. I look forward to hearing more about the success of the project and how it has helped both those looking for work and employers alike.”

  • Covid-19 briefing note – wear a mask (and help save Christmas?)

Covid-19 briefing note – wear a mask (and help save Christmas?)

Unless you’re exempt, you still need to wear a mask in most indoor spaces in Wales – including shops and stores, and on public transport.

But not everyone is sticking to the rules. And if enough people ignore them, we have a lot to lose…

We could lose our health. Maybe we could lose some of our freedoms.

Worst of all, someone we love could lose their life (people still die from Covid every day).

Wearing a mask is a small price to pay if it helps ensure we have a happy and healthy Christmas.

    🙂

The booster jab is important – get yours

Booster jab appointments are being offered by letter to eligible people across North Wales.

It’s really important that you don’t delay accepting your appointment.

Why do I need a booster?

Like other vaccines, the levels of protection can begin to wane over time.

By having a booster dose, you’ll be extending the protection you gained from your first two doses – giving you longer term protection.

And most importantly, it helps reduce the risk of you being admitted to hospital due to Covid-19 infection this winter.

The booster jab is important – make sure you get yours when offered

    Get your flu jab too

If you’re eligible for a flu jab, please take up the offer.

Most people won’t be offered their flu jab and Covid booster at the same time. Your booster will probably be given to you at a Covid-19 vaccination centre, while your flu jab will in most cases be given at your GP surgery.

Most people will be sent separate appointment letters for both jabs.

Does someone you live with have Covid, or symptoms?

    Self-isolation rules in Wales

How to get your Covid pass

From Monday (November 15), if you’re over 18, you must show the NHS Covid Pass to enter theatres, cinemas and concert halls – in addition to nightclubs and similar venues.

You can get your pass from the NHS UK website (you can’t use the NHS app to get the pass if you live in Wales). The pass can be downloaded and printed.

    You must be:

    • Aged 16 or over.
    • Registered with a GP in Wales.

You’ll need to upload a photo of one of the following:

    • Passport
    • Full UK driving licence
    • Full European driving licence

(If you don’t have photographic ID or a relevant smart device, you’ll need to request a paper NHS Covid certificate.)

If you’re heading to town this weekend please don’t forget to download your Covid Pass before you leave.

It’s now a legal requirement to show your vaccination status or a recent lateral flow test result in order to enter some premises.

You can show these quickly on your NHS Covid Pass which you can download from the NHS website.

It is easy to do at home so don’t leave it until you are outside a venue, in the dark when you don’t have access to a vital piece of information.

It’s also useful if you are planning to travel abroad or to show your employer that you are fully vaccinated and don’t need to self-isolate if you’re identified as a contact by the Test, Trace Protect (TTP) team.

You can find out more about the Covid Pass on the Welsh Government Website.

  • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site Website relaunched after make-over

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site Website relaunched after make-over

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal UNESCO World Heritage Site website has had a makeover to meet accessibility standards, making it easily available and fully bilingual on mobile phones and tablets.

In addition to the new look, the website now offers access to new learning content and collections not normally available, giving a virtual experience from home, allowing you to watch, read and discover this iconic place and experience some of the greatest aqueducts, tunnels, cuttings and embankments ever built.

Work in social care and be the lifeline your community needs.

This has been achieved through the addition of new education and learning activities for families and schools, telling the story through objects and the creation of virtual tours of the 11 mile corridor.

The website was launched during a visit from the Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, Dawn Bowden to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site.  During the visit, the Deputy Minister, said; “I’m delighted to visit this remarkable site – and to meet with people who have such a passion for this World Heritage Site.  The new website will help to introduce the aqueduct and canal to new audiences of all ages.

“The past eighteen months has been challenging for so many sectors, and I’m pleased to hear that the Cultural Recovery Funding from the Welsh Government has been of assistance during this difficult time.

“It’s great to hear that the team is now looking to the future and at plans which will ensure that the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site continues to deliver benefits, both economic and cultural for our communities, our businesses and our young people – and to be a positive beacon promoting the region and Wales throughout the world.”

Ian Bancroft, Chair of the World Heritage Site Board said “The updated website gives all the information you need to visit not only the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct but also the surrounding towns, villages and attractions along the 11 miles of the World Heritage Site.

“Along with Wales’ other three World Heritage Sites – Pontcysyllte is a vital cog in Wrexham’s tourism offer and having this easily accessible modern website will only further enable a greater understanding of the site and allow visitors to plan ahead in order to continue visiting this remarkable area.”

Mark Evans, director for Wales from Glandŵr Cymru, said: “The 11 miles of the UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts thousands of boaters and tourists to Wales every year. The website will now help promote this special site across the world and allow people to discover the history of this globally important heritage site.

“The Llangollen Canal is part of this beautiful landscape and is home to some engineering masterpieces, including the impressive Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which is well worth a visit for the views over the Dee Valley.

“Our research shows spending time next to water makes us all feel happier and healthier so plan your visit today and come and see this wonderful part of Wales.”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said, “Having a website that is both modern and fully accessible to all is essential to satisfy the global audience that this site attracts.

“It also gives a virtual visitor experience for those who are not fortunate enough to be able to visit in person. I would like to thank everyone involved for their work on this website and look forward to seeing the progress on the Business Ambassador Scheme.”

World Heritage Site Business Ambassador Scheme

The website will continue to develop with the introduction later in the year of a World Heritage Site Business Ambassador Scheme which builds on the existing North Wales Tourism Ambassador scheme.

It’s designed for tourism businesses from within the 11-mile World Heritage Site to be featured following the completion of a couple of short modules, showing a commitment and dedication to going that extra mile to advocate the area to visitors.

This will help support post Covid tourism business recovery and continue to develop a thriving tourism economy, with truly passionate people at the heart of it.

You can visit the website at www.pontcysyllte-aqueduct.co.uk

The new look website has been supported by funding from the Welsh Government’s Regional Tourism Engagement Fund and new activities funded through Wales Cultural Recovery Fund.
