    5 interesting things about Bersham

(John Wilkinson cannon – courtesy of Wrexham County Borough Museum and Archives)

Well folks we’re firmly into 2019, and it feels like a great time to give you the next instalment of ‘five interesting things about places in Wrexham County Borough’.

And next up is Bersham 🙂

For many of us, when you say Bersham, the immediate thought is Bersham Ironworks, and whilst we will touch on that, we’re also hoping to treat you to a varied selection of things about this fantastic place.

Because there’s plenty to know…in truth it could’ve been much more than the usual ‘five things’.

APPLY FOR A SEPTEMBER 2019 NURSERY SCHOOL PLACE

Anyway, enough beating around the bush. Here’s our five interesting things about Bersham…

    1. ‘Iron-Mad’ Wilkinson and Bersham Ironworks

John Wilkinson came to Wrexham in 1753, when his family purchased Bersham Ironworks.

It was in the 1760’s, when John, along with his brother William, took full control and they enjoyed great success as profits improved terrifically.

But John wasn’t just a wily businessman…he would also look to experiment and was a great inventor, hence he was given the nickname ‘Iron-Mad’.

In 1774, John patented his new technique for boring iron guns from a solid piece. This involved rotating the gun barrel, rather than the boring bar, which made the guns more accurate and less likely to explode.

John’s story at Bersham is quite fascinating, and we could never fully do it justice with a few paragraphs…

Bersham was quite simply, one of the most important iron manufacturing centres in the world because of his brilliant work.

You can find more information about Bersham Ironworks and John Wilkinson on the main council website.

    2. Plas Power Woods

If you’re a keen walker, Bersham can cater for this too, with the vast Plas Power Woods…it’s over 100 acres.

The woods run along the River Clywedog, from Coedpoeth through to Bersham. It forms part of the highly recommended Clywedog Valley Trail, for which we have a great walking guide you can download from the council website.

Plas Power Woods is packed with history, and contains one of the most impressive sections of Offa’s Dyke.

Go and have a look for yourselves – the Western Weir, Nant Bridge and Bersham Lodge are some of the many highlights.

Plas Power Woods Bersham Coedpoeth Offa's Dyke

    3. The Davies brothers

Robert and John Davies were brothers and exceptional smiths, hailing from Bersham, who are renowned for their high quality work with wrought-iron.

They were active in the 18th century and you’ve probably already seen a lot of their work…

The gates at Chirk Castle and St Giles Church have both been attributed to the Davies brothers, and there are several more examples of their work across the local area.

A very talented family indeed 🙂

    4. St Mary’s Church

We’ve covered a number of beautiful churches in many of our previous ‘five interesting things’ blogs, and St Mary’s (also known as Plas Power church) is no exception.

John Gibson designed it in 1875 for Thomas Fitzhugh, with the intention for it to be used by the Plas Power household and its dependants.

It was built in a Romanesque style with rock-faced rubble and has many distinctive features, including the chevron mouldings and two-toned bands that surround the window and door arches.

Impressive heavy wooden gates with cast iron bolts give entry to the church.

A tower was later added to the church in 1895, which was built in three stages.

    5. Allen ‘Alf’ Pugh

Allen, sometimes known as ‘Alf’, was born in Bersham in 1869.

He was a football player, who played goalkeeper to a decent level for Rhostyllen Victoria for many years. He also spent a season playing for Wrexham from 1885-86.

And he made an unlikely single appearance for Wales in very unusual circumstances.

On April 15, 1889, Wales were playing a match against Scotland at the Racecourse ground, but the regular goalkeeper failed to turn up as his club team refused to release him.

Kick-off was delayed as a replacement goalkeeper was sought…enter Allen ‘Alf’ Pugh!

‘Alf’ was substituted some 20 minutes into the match, when the regular goalkeeper eventually turned up, but this match has significance for a number of reasons.

He actually became the first ever player to be substituted in international football.

And it was also the first time that Scotland had failed to beat Wales (this was their 14th meeting and the match ended 0-0).

Twenty minutes that put ‘Alf’ into the history books.

We hope you enjoyed this instalment 🙂

If you did, keep your eyes peeled for the next one.

  • How this pup stole the show at Tŷ Pawb’s art exhibition

How this pup stole the show at Tŷ Pawb’s art exhibition

An amateur artist from Wrexham is celebrating after winning a prestigious prize at a local exhibition.

Austin Griffiths won the ‘People’s Prize’ at the Wrexham Open Exhibition with his painting of ‘Lucy’ the dog.

The Wrexham Open is North East Wales largest open art exhibition. Over 300 works by 180 artists were displayed at the two co-host venues, Tŷ Pawb and Undegun, between October and December 2018.

The People’s Prize for the Wrexham Open was decided through a public vote. Visitors to the two venues were able to view all the works and nominate the work they thought should win.

The winner was announced at the closing ceremony of the event just before Christmas.

    A ‘wonderful surprise’

Mr Griffiths said: “I’d like to thank the public for choosing my painting. It’s a wonderful surprise because this is the first time I’ve entered the Wrexham Open.

“I’m from Wrexham myself but I didn’t start painting properly until after I’d retired. I’d previously worked on the railways and in the celanese factory at Redwither.

“After retiring I started practising art a lot more. I joined the Workers Education Association and also a summer school in Harlech.”

“The dog in the painting, ‘Lucy’, is actually from a dog calendar I had. I’m so thrilled to have won such a prestigious award with it.”

    Exhibition a great success

As well as the People’s Prize, four other prizes were also awarded by a panel of judges at the opening of the exhibition. The winners were as follows:

Judges Prize – Lesley James – Opposing Views (Tŷ Pawb)

Socially Engaged Practice – Louise Short – Sunset Over Stanlow (Tŷ Pawb)

Lens-based Media Prize – Alan Whitfield – Marram Grass House (Undegun)

Young Person Prize – Gideon Vass (Undegun)

Tŷ Pawb’s Curator, James Harper, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with 2018’s Wrexham Open. The quality and variety of works across both venues was outstanding and this has been reflected in the support and positive comments we’ve had from visitors.

“It’s very fitting that the People’s Prize, the final award to be announced, went to a local amateur artist. We hope Austin’s work, and the exhibition as a whole, will inspire many others to get creative and to keep on supporting our flourishing local art scene.”

  • Wrexham’s Local Development Plan – where are we now?

Wrexham’s Local Development Plan – where are we now?

Following a decision at its meeting on November 22, 2018, the Council has submitted its Local Development Plan (LDP) to the Welsh Government for Examination in Public.

Before this Examination can take place we want to give you the opportunity to comment on the “Focused Changes” – changes we want to make, based on the responses we received to our consultation.

These changes will be subject to a formal six-week public consultation between Monday, January 7 and 5pm on Monday, February 18.

Importantly, representations made at this stage must stick to the Focused Changes and should clearly express support or objection. Representations should not propose further changes. Any representations submitted at Deposit Stage do not need to be re-submitted.

APPLY FOR A SEPTEMBER 2019 NURSERY SCHOOL PLACE

    You can take part here.

The Examination will then be carried out by an independent inspector who will decide whether the Plan is fundamentally ‘sound’.

The Inspector will assess the soundness of the Plan as a whole rather than simply considering individual objections, and will base her judgement on the evidence available, the representations made and the particular circumstance of the Plan and the area.

The Submission Documents can be viewed here.

  • Draining Stryt Las Pond for Fish Removal and cleaning

Draining Stryt Las Pond for Fish Removal and cleaning

Visitors to Stryt Las Park in Johnstown may notice some work taking place to the large pond to drain and clean it.

The Rangers do this every year to give the lake a good clean up. Litter in the lake is unsightly and often dangerous to the many birds that live on the lake at Stryt Las.

Traffic signs, bikes, thousands of cans and bottles and the ever present shopping trolleys have all been removed from the mud in previous years.

APPLY FOR A SEPTEMBER 2019 NURSERY SCHOOL PLACE

Any fish present in the lake will be netted by Natural Resources Wales and relocated to another pond or a lake that needs stocking. We remove the fish for the benefit of the rare Great crested newts that inhabit this site. Unfortunately fish like to eat Great crested newts and as the newt is a protected species and Stryt Las is a designated Special Area of Conservation the ponds need to be kept free of fish.

The ducks and swans that live on the lake at Stryt Las are free to fly to other ponds, as they often do, returning at a later date. The ranger has requested that visitors to the park do not feed the ducks. Feeding the ducks and swans encourages the birds to be less fearful of people, which makes them more vulnerable, especially to dogs, a particular problem while the lake is drained.

If you would like to help the rangers clean out the lake, please give the rangers a call on 01978 822780. Once the fish have been caught and the rubbish cleared the lake will be allowed to refill naturally.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “The park is visited by many people during the winter months and regulars will be used to this annual clean up. The Rangers work hard to protect Special Area of Conservation and the protected newts and other wildlife that live on the site.”

Don’t miss your chance! Grants available to help community groups in Wrexham

Do you want to set up a new group for adults in your local community?

Could you host a luncheon club?

Is a group you attend looking to expand?

Well, the Community Inclusion Grant could help you!

Our Adult Social Care Team helps to fund lots of different projects and groups for adults across Wrexham.  From luncheon clubs, Yoga and art classes to bird watching and line dancing.

The grant aims to support the start-up of community based activities or expand groups and lunch, supper and breakfast clubs which support the independence, health and wellbeing of individuals living within their community.

Applications can be submitted throughout the year for consideration at quarterly Grant Panels.

Following on from the success of the Community Inclusion Grant since 2012, we are now widening the eligibility criteria. This means that we will welcome applications from schemes that support older adults and adults with learning and/or physical disabilities and mental health problems, as well as informal carers.

Since 2012 the Grant has helped nearly one hundred groups in the County Borough.

Mr Phil Coops, said, “Funding from the Community Inclusion Grant has made it possible for our small group to obtain and make available equipment and material for the use of the whole community in a manner that has not been available before. We can now help the senior members of the district remember their previous years and recollect the past that they will enjoy.

“The process for obtaining the grant is quite simple to navigate and the staff were always available to help should there be any problems. As a group, they have been invaluable in helping us to carry out our successful application and project for the community.”

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: “Having now extended the grant criteria these grants are open to a much wider variety of community groups.

“This is excellent news, the grants have already supported lots of community activities across Wrexham and I would encourage anyone who is thinking of setting up a community group or wants to build on an existing group to get in touch with the commissioning team.”

Grants can be used for sessions run by volunteers where people can meet together on a regular basis for activities. Proposals are invited from individuals and organisations for activities such as:

    • Lunch with good company

  • Plans for increases at primary school

Plans for increases at primary school

Plans on increasing capacity at a village primary school will be discussed by our Executive Board.

Back in the autumn, we held a consultation on whether or not we should increase capacity at Ysgol Bro Alun, a Welsh language primary school in Gwersyllt.

The majority of the responses we received during the consultation were very supportive of the proposal, and as such, we’re now looking at the next steps.

APPLY FOR A SEPTEMBER 2019 NURSERY SCHOOL PLACE

Alongside the positive responses received during the consultation, we also know that demand for Welsh medium school primary places in Wrexham is projected to grow in the next few years.

On Tuesday, January 8, our Executive Board will look at proposals to permanently increase capacity at Bro Alun.

The plans would look at creating spaces for a further 105 pupils – at a rate of 15 per year group, bringing the school’s maximum capacity up to 315 (plus 45 nursery places).

The first year of increases would start in September 2019 at both nursery and reception, each of which would gain an extra 15 pupil places. The increase would be limited to those year groups only.

The admission number would increase by 15 places per year until the school reaches its new maximum capacity of 315.

Executive Board members will discuss the plans on January 8 – you can watch the webcast here.

  • Future of Erlas site to be looked at by Executive Board

Future of Erlas site to be looked at by Executive Board

Senior councillors will discuss plans for the future of the former Bryn Estyn and surrounding Erlas site in the New Year.

We started looking at the possible future of the site in 2011, when we carried out an office accommodation strategy to look at how we use all of our office buildings and whether or not they could be improved – or sold or demolished.

Plans for Erlas were examined as part of that review, and back in 2015, we commissioned an ecological survey for the site to prepare it either for sale or demolition.

APPLY FOR A SEPTEMBER 2019 NURSERY SCHOOL PLACE

A lot of work was done to look at the ecological impact either option would have on the land – but those surveys are now out of date, and new surveys will be needed.

With that in mind, our Executive Board will be looking at proposals for the site when they next meet in January.

Proposals in front of the Board will include carrying out ecological surveys to allow us to demolish Erlas House.

Our Adult Social Care department will also work alongside the Erlas Victorian Walled Garden group, who currently lease part of the site to provide training opportunities to adults with learning disabilities, to see what their plans are for the future as part of our adult social care work opportunities review.

We’ve also worked closely with Operation Pallial to make sure residents of the former Bryn Estyn are kept up to date with plans for Erlas.

And we’ve also liaised with First Choice Housing, and the Armed Forces Rehabilitation Centre, both of whom use or operate out of the site to make sure they know what our plans are.

The proposals will be discussed by members of the Executive Board on Tuesday, January 8.
