  • Counselling support for young people in Wrexham

Counselling support for young people in Wrexham

This blog is one of a number of stories we will be posting about Youth Work Week 2019

Our young people’s counselling team, Outside In, works across Wrexham, with services provided at eight primary schools, all of our secondary schools and the Info Shop on Lambpit Street which offers sessions up to the age of 25.

The team is made up of experienced counsellors, all of whom can tailor their sessions according to each individual’s needs and wishes.

Young people can be referred to counsellors by school staff, pupils themselves, parents, school nurses and others.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

Each young person receives an individualised approach to attaining their goals, which could be helping them to reduce social isolation, specific work on confidence and self-esteem, managing their emotions including anger, bullying, and/ or self-harm.

Counselling is extremely important because we need to take care of ourselves both mentally and physically. Counselling can support young people with education, training and employment, relationships and many other areas of their life that they may not feel able to speak to anyone else about, such as LGBT issues, gender identity, sexuality, family issues, and anxiety.

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, said: “The Outside In team does incredible work in providing a reassuring and confidential setting for young people to discuss a variety of issues that may be causing mental health conditions, or other problems in their day-to-day lives.

“Any young person who thinks that they might benefit from some counselling should get in touch – there’s no need for them to stay silent or feel alone.”

    Drop In

There is also a counselling drop in session at the INFO shop from 10am until 12pm every Tuesday.  This gives young people the opportunity to speak to a counsellor and for the counsellor to assess the needs of the young person who may be in crisis or requiring additional support.

  • More news for Techniquest Glyndŵr and the town centre!

More news for Techniquest Glyndŵr and the town centre!

There’s further good news for the town centre today as Techniquest Glyndŵr announce it has secured major funding of £2.5 million from the Inspiring Science Fund and Welsh Government in conjunction with ourselves. This will contribute to the overall project cost of £2.8 million

It means the Wrexham based science centre will finally be able to realise its long-held dream of moving to the town centre into the empty former TJ Hughes building.

The move will enable the Science Centre to make use of the much larger premises to offer an ambitious programme of science events and a much wider selection of interactive exhibits to the public and schools from across North Wales and North West England.

£750,000 has been secured in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council from the Welsh Government’s Targeted Regeneration Investment Programme will enable acquisition and refurbishment of this key property. The £1.75million funding awarded comes from the ‘Inspiring Science Fund’ and is intended to boost greater engagement and interest in science and technology amongst under-represented groups across the UK.

The bid for funding had the support of several key agencies in Wrexham including Wrexham Glyndŵr University and ourselves as we support the regeneration of the town centre.

The plans outlined in the bid have also received widespread public support, demonstrated by the large numbers of local people who visited the temporary science centre pop up over the summer months when it was open during Wrexham’s series of monthly street festivals.

Local businesses in the town centre have also expressed their approval for the proposal to create a new town centre attraction which they see will help with the long term economic future of the town.

Many have been backing the #MyTQG campaign over the last year and everyone from local government, businesses and the public have been right behind it.

Techniquest Glyndŵr are now looking to local industry to support them financially and in kind as they work hard over the next two years to develop the site and even more exciting projects.

The award of the funding begins an intensive 12-month period during which the town centre building will be purchased and converted into a fully operational science centre to replace the existing centre on the Plas Coch Campus of Wrexham Glyndŵr University.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Mark Pritchard said: “This is excellent news for Techniquest Glyndŵr and the town centre. It will really open up this part of town once again and I would like to both congratulate staff and thank them for their hard work in securing this funding. The development will be part of the town centre regeneration which will see the Henblas Street and Chester Street areas brought into residential and retail use. With an announcement expected soon about the former BHS store the future is looking bright for this area of town.”

Scot Owen, Techniquest Glyndŵr Centre Manager said: “We’re thrilled to have secured the future of Techniquest Glyndŵr within the heart of our community here in Wrexham. This move has been part of our vision for quite some time and now we’re able to actively begin to put our plans in place.

Techniquest Glyndŵr is committed to Wrexham and the town centre community, which goes hand in hand with inspiring young minds through STEM subjects. Having somewhere so embedded within the community will only be a positive for all.
We now continue to look forward in what is a very exciting time for both ourselves and Wrexham as a whole, with a fantastic opportunity to create something special for our region.

Lynda Powell, Director of North Wales Science said: “This is absolutely great news – for Techniquest Glyndŵr, for Wrexham town centre, and for STEM in North and Mid Wales.

“This funding will help secure Techniquest Glyndŵr in a key town centre location – one which is seeing a range of private and public sector investment. The development will be a key part of the regeneration of our town centre.

“It means that Wrexham Glyndŵr University can continue extending the community work it has been doing with its portfolio of science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses. That work is an investment in our regional skills base that has been has developed alongside industry partners, and it will help to boost our economy for years to come.”

11-25? Be a part of the important issues!

This week is Youth Work Week and throughout the week we will be publishing articles about the different areas of youth work the council provides and supports.

This first article is focusing on the Senedd Yr Ifanc (Wrexham Youth Parliament).

So, what’s the aim of Senedd Yr Ifanc?

Senedd Yr Ifanc works hard to tackle the issues that are important to people aged 11-25. The aim is to give young people a place at the debating table when it comes to the big changes that could affect the rest of their lives.

GET PUBLIC PROTECTION EMAIL ALERTS NOW!

    When do they meet?

The Senedd meets every last Monday of the month in Wrexham Guildhall. The meetings are structured with formal and informal sections. During a Senedd meeting professionals will come to speak to the Senedd to gather the views and opinions of specific issues. Senedd meetings can also include debates, issue based work groups, training, consultations and much more.

How do I become a representative?

Any young person can become a representative of the Senedd.  They will be responsible for ensuring that the views of other young people from their group, forum, school etc. are considered in matters affecting young people across the county. As a representative, they are also responsible for feeding any information, answers and updates from the Senedd back to youth groups, forum, school etc.

The Senedd gives young people the chance to have their say and a voice on matters that affect them.

  • Food waste recycling – some handy tips

Food waste recycling – some handy tips

Do you recycle food waste? In Wrexham, with weekly collections, free caddies and free caddy liners, it’s definitely easier than ever to recycle your leftovers.

With that in mind, we thought we’d give you a short list of handy tips to help you become a recycling superhero.

And even if you already recycle food, you still might find some of these tips useful 🙂

WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

    Handy tips

Having a barbecue? Take your food caddy outside with you and pop any bones or leftovers inside as you go along. It makes cleaning up afterwards much easier…just make sure you shut the lid to avoid any pesky flies.

Running low on caddy liners? Tie an empty liner to your caddy handle on your collection day and we’ll leave you a new roll. Simple as that!

Enjoy a morning brew? Tea bags can be recycled in your food caddy. More of a coffee person? Well, the same goes for any leftover/out of date coffee granules too.

Got something going mouldy in your fridge? Pop it in a caddy liner and put it straight into your larger food caddy ready to be collected. Remember your caddy gets emptied every week…if you put in your black bin, it’ll sit there for a couple of weeks and get stinky.

Got an uneaten ready meal? All the food is recyclable in your food caddy, plus you can recycle any cardboard boxes and plastic trays too…just make sure they’re clean when you recycle them.

Fancy an ice lolly? When it’s sunny, most of us are partial to an ice lolly, but what do you do with the wooden stick? Because these, like any wooden cutlery, can be recycled in your food caddy!

Got a fussy family member that doesn’t eat all the food you make for them? Whether it’s your grandkid, child or sibling, make sure the leftovers get recycled in your food caddy.

Fancy giving our one-week challenge a go? This is for the people that don’t currently recycle food…yes, we can hear you – “I don’t recycle food because I don’t really have any leftovers”. Give food recycling a go for a week, you’ll be surprised by how many leftovers you actually have. You can order a caddy for free from our website if you need one.

You can view a detailed list of what can be recycled as food waste here.

    “A number of benefits”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport says, “More and more people are starting to recycle their food waste, but we know that we can do even better. There are a number of benefits to recycling your food waste, such as weekly collections and free caddy liners, and we want to encourage people to take advantage of these.”

Another one of these benefits is having extra space in your black bin…find out why ‘Space Is Ace’ by taking our fun recycling quiz.
