  • 5 things to look forward to at Underneath the Arches 2019

5 things to look forward to at Underneath the Arches 2019

Underneath the Arches 2019 is now only a few short weeks away and the excitement’s really starting to set in.

In preparation we’ve compiled a list of some of a few things to look forward to at the upcoming event.

    1. It’s fun for the whole family

Picture this. You see a quality looking event advertised online. There are drinks, music, good food and a stunning back drop. You’re ready to buy your tickets until you see the dreaded “NO CHILDREN UNDER 16”.

Fortunately this won’t be an issue with the upcoming Underneath the Arches, the event is very much a family affair and parents are encouraged to bring the kids along.

    2. Chairs are permitted

Hate standing up for extended periods of time? So do we. Luckily this is something Underneath the Arches has taken into consideration by permitting all attendees to bring along a chair.

APPLY ONLINE FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT IN SEPTEMBER NOW!

    3. Breath-taking Location

There are only 3 World Heritage Sites in Wales and the Wrexham County is lucky enough to be home to one of them. What better way is there to celebrate this than by hosting a massive festival at the base of the site on a (hopefully) gorgeous summer day? This year also marks 10 years of World Heritage Site Status for the aqueduct meaning there’s all the more reason to attend!

    4. ‘Bring your own drink’ policy

There’s not much worse than paying admission for a festival only to discover you’re forced to pay through the nose for a brand of drink you don’t even like.

Underneath the Arches addresses this issue by allowing attendees to bring their own alcohol to the event (provided they’re of legal age).

Make sure you check the permitted alcohol list below:

    • 8 x 440ml cans / or 330ml bottles of beer, lager or cider or…
    • 1 x 75cl bottle of wine or…
    • 1 x 50cl or 0.5ltr bottle of spirits

    5. A great opportunity to take photos

Make this Underneath the Arches more than a memory by capturing your favourite moments.

Nabbing a few pics might even land you a few tickets for next year’s instalment!

Has this got you in the mood for this year’s Underneath the Arches 2019? Then you can buy your tickets here or by clicking on the button below.

  • Don’t get tricked by this potential investment scam

Don’t get tricked by this potential investment scam

Trading Standards have become aware of a potential scam relating to the sale and purchase of land in Florida. Be very careful if you’re approached by anyone about this.

Trading Standards advise you should always be very wary of promises of investment opportunities. If you’re planning to purchase land anywhere, always do lots of research and get trusted legal advice from an independent solicitor or legal advisor.

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

Never agree to anything or sign any documents before thoroughly checking out all details. Members of the public have previously lost lots of money to this type of scam when either the land didn’t exist or there turned out to be other hidden costs attached to the purchase.

Be very careful…and remember if something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

If you want to report something you think is suspicious, please contact either Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 03454 040506 or North Wales Police on 101.

  • “Mission to Mars” for local schools

“Mission to Mars” for local schools

Solving challenges, making robots and navigating Mars doesn’t sound like an ordinary school day but for these Wrexham pupils that is exactly what it was.

16 schools came to the Catrin Finch Centre at Glyndwr University for a special event where children were tasked with challenges linked to Mars Exploration.

Pupils aged between 9 and 14 used their creativity to make robots to navigate the canyons of Mars using special technology and their own individual design flare.

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

Working in groups, children and teachers took part in a number of challenges that tested science, technology, engineering and maths skills. Pupils used coding to guide their robots through a course, designed to imitate the surface of Mars.

Simon Billington, Wrexham Council said, “This event tested the pupils’ creativity, problem solving and digital skills. Not only was it challenging, but it was also a lot of fun. We were pleased that a total of 16 schools attended the event and we hope to do more events like this in the future to support the upcoming new curriculum in Wales.”

Throughout the day pupils and teachers used a range of devices and equipment including Lego, Crumble, Microbit, Chromebooks and Google Classroom to help them test their ideas and find possible solutions to the problems faced in Mars Exploration.

The event was run by Wrexham’s Schools ICT Support Service and sponsored by Wrexham’s Google Partner, Getech Education with additional support from, Redfern Electronics, Reads Construction and Creative Hut.

    The attending schools were:

    St Pauls

  • Best Bar None Scheme launched in Wrexham

Best Bar None Scheme launched in Wrexham

The official launch of the Best Bar None (BBN) scheme 2019 in Wrexham took place yesterday at the town centre’s Nightsafe meeting.

Nightsafe is a partnership between licensees, North Wales Police and Wrexham Council working together to promote safety in the night time environment.

Best Bar None Wrexham is part of the national voluntary Best Bar Scheme for night time venues, designed to keep staff and customers safe while recognising excellence in their industry via an audit of over 120 criteria covering everything from responsible and safe management to customer care.

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety said, “Participation in the Best Bar None Scheme is voluntary and requires a great deal of commitment and hard work from all of the participants.

All pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants that enter the scheme should be commended for the work they are doing to make Wrexham a safe place”

Best Bar None is a national accreditation scheme supported by the Home Office and the drinks industry aimed primarily at promoting responsible management and operation of alcohol-licensed premises. It has now been adopted by 75 town and cities across the UK.

Alison Watkin, Community Safety Officer, Wrexham County Borough Council Said, “We are looking forward to receiving applications for the Wrexham BBN Awards 2019 and encourage licensed premises to participate, no matter how small or large they are – everyone is welcome and will be given support throughout the process. We really want partners in the night time environment to work together to demonstrate that Wrexham provides a fun and safe night out.”

Wrexham’s BBN scheme was presented with an award in February this year at the National BBN Awards 2018 held at the House of Lords

Pubs, clubs restaurants and bars within Wrexham will undergo an assessment period where they are judged against criteria and then given suggestions on how to improve or given the accreditation.

Participating licensees are encouraged to act responsibly and take pride in their premises and surroundings and, in doing so, put something back into their town and local communities. The scheme culminates annually in an awards ceremony, which celebrates the achievement of all of the premises.

The scheme is open to licensed premises, with 13 town centre venues participating last year.

All premises that enter the Best Bar None Awards Scheme are audited by trained assessors and, if successful, will become an accredited member of the scheme achieving either a Gold, Silver or Bronze award. The top premises are then put before an independent judging panel, who select the winners in each category.

Ann Williams, North Wales Police Eastern Licensing Officer said, “Prevention is key to creating a safe night time economy and Best Bar None provides us with an excellent opportunity for all partners and venues to work together to keep people safe.  Wrexham BBN has already been recognised nationally for the initiatives and training delivered on vulnerability work which will continue, but I very much look forward to working with the trade this year on some of our new criteria focusing on Action Counters Terrorism Awareness and Knife Crime.”

  • Safety advice for unmodified Whirlpool tumble dryers

Safety advice for unmodified Whirlpool tumble dryers

Safety advice for consumers for Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan and Proline tumble dryers manufactured between April 2004 – September 2015.

Consumers affected by a Whirlpool safety issue, who still have unmodified tumble dryers, have been told to unplug them immediately and seek a free modification.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has repeated its safety advice to people who may have one of the estimated 500,000 Whirlpool tumble dryers still to undergo modification.

APPLY ONLINE FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT IN SEPTEMBER NOW!

Following a recent review by OPSS, consumers whose Whirlpool tumble dryers have been modified can continue to use them safely, according to the instructions. However, those with an unmodified, affected tumble dryer have been told to unplug them and not use until they have been modified, free of charge, by Whirlpool.

OPSS has published specific requirements for Whirlpool to act on and the investigation is ongoing.

All consumers should always follow manufacturers’ instructions, including thoroughly and regularly clearing out the lint tray of tumble dryers.

Whirlpool’s affected brands are: Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda, Swan, Proline. For further information, please contact Whirlpool or visit the brands’ websites.

Consumers should always be vigilant and register appliances at Register My Appliance to ensure they receive updates on product modifications and recalls.

Consumers are encouraged to: visit the GOV.UK Product Recall page for up-to-date information on current recalls.

Anyone with concerns about product safety can call the Citizens Advice consumer service line on 03454 04 05 06.
