  • Jazz comes to Tŷ Pawb!

    Jazz comes to Tŷ Pawb!

Jazz fan? Or do you simply want to try something new?

Then, why not come along to Tŷ Pawb on Wednesday, June 5 at 8pm to hear the delights of the Brownfield Byrne Hot Six?

Performing a brand of infectious swing, the Hot Six, co-led by Liam Byrne (tenor sax) and Jamie Brownfield (trumpet) play classic jazz from New Orleans through the great American song book to mainstream, inspired by the classic small groups and swing era stylists of the late 1930s and early 1940s.

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

The Brownfield Byrne Hot Six has managed to forge an original sound whilst staying firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, and continues to prove popular at jazz clubs and festivals across the country.

Trumpeter Jamie Brownfield, winner of the Rising Star category at the 2012 British Jazz Awards, has a broad playing style. More recently, Jamie has just returned from New Orleans after winning a prestigious British Airways competition to perform during a VIP flight to the city for the famous Mardi Gras, where he got the chance to play with one of his modern trumpet heroes, Leroy Jones.

Liam Byrne plays tenor sax. He is a postgraduate of London’s Guildhall School of music and also the bands arranger. A growing favourite with jazz clubs around the country he can often be heard guesting with numerous bands including the Andy Prior Big Band, and has recently performed to great acclaim with US tenor saxophonist Harry Allen in a band with the UK’s Dave Newton and Dave Green on piano and double bass.

On keyboards, Tom Kincaid has become the first choice of many touring artists and band leaders, and has performed with jazz saxophonist Art Themen and Scott Hamilton, as well as his childhood hero, rock ‘n’ roll legend Shakin Stevens.

The Brownfield Byrne Hot Six is completed by Andy Hulme (guitar), Jim Swinnerton (double bass) and Jack Cotterill (drums).

  • Events will mark 10 years for Aqueduct World Heritage Site

Events will mark 10 years for Aqueduct World Heritage Site

We’ve got a lot of fantastic attractions on our doorstep in Wrexham.

And later in the summer, we’ll be marking the first decade since some of our finest historic attractions received international recognition.

June 27 will mark 10 years since the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was inscribed as a World Heritage Site (WHS) by UNESCO.

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

We – along with partners in the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site Board – have organised a series of events throughout the summer and well in to the autumn to celebrate the 10 year anniversary, with a range of community and arts events taking place across the 11-mile WHS area, as well as at the aqueduct itself.

The upcoming events include Lego aqueduct building sessions at the Canal & River Trust’s visitor centre in Trevor; arts workshops at Corwen and Llangollen run by Denbighshire County Council; a photography competition run by Wrexham Council to highlight many of the sights in the WHS area – and many more.

On June 29, a community fun day will take place in Trevor Basin, with coracles and canal boats open to the public, a variety of community stalls and activities – and Techniquest Glyndŵr will be on hand providing insight on building aqueducts and bridges.

But the fun won’t stop there – there’ll be the usual fun and bright lights of Underneath the Arches, and the aqueduct’s 10th year anniversary will also be represented at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

And as part of the celebrations, we’re also inviting children to take part in a poetry contest, which could see them winning a trip along the Llangollen Canal in a horse-drawn boat – find out more details about the children’s poetry competition on the Glandŵr Cymru website.

Just click here for the full list of events.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Chair of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site Board, said: “The World Heritage Site is a huge asset for us in this area, and during the last 10 years has brought thousands of people to this part of Wales.

“UNESCO recognition was very much deserved for this area – not just for the way the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was constructed out of cast iron, the impressive aqueduct and viaduct at Chirk, but also the 11 miles of civil engineering, and the natural beauty of the Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen.

“As well as seeing an increase in its popularity as a tourist attraction, partners have also invested heavily in improving features and facility throughout the World Heritage Site, and with that in mind it’s right that we recognise not just the anniversary of the inscription of the area by UNESCO, but also the level of investment seen in the site during the last decade.

“I’d like to invite everyone to take part in those events taking place as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations – not just the community day taking place in the Trevor Basin on June 29, but also the other upcoming contests and competitions to recognise the World Heritage Site Area’s special importance.”

  • Knock, knock…want to buy a mattress? Don’t get a nasty surprise

Knock, knock…want to buy a mattress? Don’t get a nasty surprise

You get a knock at your front door.
You open it and there’s a man.
He has his van parked at the edge of your driveway.
He’s offering to sell you a mattress.
It seems like a good deal.
It’s much cheaper than the one you were thinking about buying.
    But there’s a reason for this…

There’s been reports around Wrexham of people selling mattresses from the back of vans and it’s important to be aware that this is a scam…don’t get tempted into making a big mistake.

COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

    A potentially fatal hazard

That’s because these mattresses aren’t what they appear to be. Sometimes the mattress you’re being offered was made from used spring units and dirty fillings, even if it looks fine on the outside.

Or the mattress was made for less than £50 from a very basic spring unit with a polyester fibre pad or a layer of cheap foam over it, and covered in a cheap material…but that’s if you’re lucky.

Either way, the mattress almost certainly hasn’t undergone testing to see whether it meets the UK mattress flammability regulations…and we’re sure you don’t want this potentially fatal hazard anywhere near you or your family.

    “A low quality, substandard product”

Roger Mapleson, Trading Standards and Licensing Lead, said: “If someone turns up at your doorstep offering to sell you a mattress, it’ll almost certainly be a low-quality, substandard product that won’t have been tested against UK mattress flammability regulations.

“The mattress was probably put together for a fraction of the ‘cheap’ or ‘bargain’ price you’re being offered it for, so it’s really important to be aware of this type of scam so you don’t fall victim to it.”

    Extremely convincing

The people selling these can be extremely convincing too – they have company names very similar to well-known brands, with professional looking logos blazoned on their vans and polo shirts – but their products are far from what they seem.

If they sense you’re not sure, they’ll tell you how it’s all legit and it’s just excess stock from a store that was closing down, or perhaps from a cancelled order.

The mattresses might be wrapped up in plastic to look nice and shiny with labels showing their supposed recommended retail prices, but it’s not what it appears to be.

Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it usually is 🙂

If you want to complain or get any advice about goods or services you have bought please contact Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 03454 040506.

  • How these Wrexham pupils became Premier League recycling stars

How these Wrexham pupils became Premier League recycling stars

In January, Sky Ocean Rescue and the Premier League launched the Plastic Pollution Challenge, which asked primary school pupils to pledge how they would cut their use of plastics.

(The Plastic Pollution Challenge is part of the wider Premier League Primary Stars teaching resources)

The Clywedog and Taff class (Year 3) at St Mary’s Primary school in Wrexham proved they were more than up for the challenge with their recycling heroics being rewarded with a visit to Sky Studios in London.

There were over 13,500 entries to the competition from pupils across England and Wales, and St Mary’s was one of ten schools selected to visit London and present a news report about their recycling pledge ‘Think and Reuse’.

WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

The news report created by the class will be shared on the Premier League Primary Stars site and a panel of judges will choose an ultimate winner. Also, the school will receive a visit from Plasticus the Sky Ocean Rescue whale, plus the Premier League Trophy and some other special guests!

Whilst in Sky Academy Studios the pupils were divided into four teams, with each team being responsible for filming a section of the news report. The pupils were all given roles in their team such as producer, cameraman and news reporter. They were also fortunate to have a tour of the Sky Studios and visited Sky News and Sky Sports.

The recycling pledge they developed was ‘Think and Reuse’ and they’ve been spreading this message across Wrexham by asking local cafes to put their ‘Refill not Landfill’ recycling posters in their shop windows.

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport said: “This is fantastic news on so many fronts. Firstly, it’s great that the children and their school have taken it upon themselves to get involved with recycling, and then they’ve taken it further by spreading their message to a wider audience.

“But to then see their work get rewarded with a visit to Sky Studios is wonderful – it shows that hard work and caring about the future of the planet pays off. Everyone should be extremely proud of themselves.”

The visit took place on Wednesday, May 15 and pupils and teachers had a great time with the school regularly tweeting throughout the day.

    https://twitter.com/stmaryswxm/status/1128769915681484800

Rachel Acton, Headteacher at St Mary’s said: “We’re so proud of our Year 3 children who are educating our school community with their pledge ‘Think and Reuse.’ It’s so important that our children understand their responsibility to look after our planet and they, alongside our Eco Committee, are truly leading the way.”

“It’s wonderful to think that through their work, the children have been inspired to think of new initiatives to improve recycling facilities in the school and to educate all members of the school community, including the catering staff.”

Think and Reuse put into action

The whole of St. Mary’s have now taken on the ‘Think and Reuse’ pledge. In future events such as discos and sports days, single-use plastics will be avoided. A ‘no plastic lunchbox challenge’ has been introduced encouraging children and parents to think, “Do I really need plastic packaging?”

School assemblies about the alternatives to single-use plastics have also taken place. The children are also in the process of making plastic bottle greenhouses and the school has introduced a crisp packaging recycling scheme.

    What do the children say?

Here’s some great quotes from some of the children from St Mary’s 🙂

Cali: “I think it’s so important to reduce and recycle plastic as it’s our world and we need to protect it.”

Eric: “We’ve learnt so much about recycling in our plastic topic and I think we should try and teach everyone how important it is and why.”

Austeja: “We want people to think before they buy plastic. Do they really need to buy it or can they use a reusable item such as a bag, lunchbox or bottle instead?”

Want to find out more about the packaging you use?

Take this quiz on single-use plastics and see how you get on…
