Mrs Gill Davies, a teacher at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School, is retiring. And after more than four decades dedicated to the children, their families and the school’s staff, there is a lot to celebrate.
Mrs Davies began working at the school after completing her nursery nurse training and, remarkably, has remained at the school ever since.
Over those four decades, she has become one of the most familiar, trusted and loved members of staff, touching the lives of countless children and their families.
During her time at St Mary’s, Mrs Davies has worked under just three headteachers – Mr Mike Greaney, Mrs Kathy Jones and the present headteacher, Mrs Rachel Acton. Through changing times in education and generations of pupils passing through the school, her commitment, care and professionalism have never wavered, approaching everything with warmth, kindness, creativity and a wonderful sense of humour.
Headteacher, Rachel Acton, said: “Whether welcoming a nervous child on their first day, offering reassurance when it was needed most, or sharing a joke to make everyone smile, Mrs Davies has a unique ability to make children feel safe, happy and valued.
“On behalf of the entire St Mary’s School family, thank you, Mrs Davies, for 43 years of unwavering dedication, kindness and care. We wish you every happiness in your retirement and thank you for everything you have given to our school family.
“But her impact extends far beyond the classroom. Many former pupils have since returned to St Mary’s as parents themselves, with Mrs Davies then helping to welcome and support the next generation of their families. Few people can say that they have played such an important role in the lives of a school community for so long.”
Throughout her career, Mrs Davies has worked alongside many colleagues, forming lifelong friendships and earning the respect and admiration of everyone she has met. Staff past and present describe her as the heart of the school, someone who has always put children first and someone who has embodied the caring values that lie at the centre of St Mary’s.
As she begins a well-earned retirement, Mrs Davies leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of love, warmth and dedicated service. While she will be greatly missed by pupils, parents and colleagues alike, her influence will continue to be felt for many years to come.
