  • Warning: disposing of gas bottle canisters

Warning: disposing of gas bottle canisters

    Empty gas canister?

It’s important that you return them to your supplier.

Gas canisters are potentially hazardous and should not be put in your rubbish bin. It’s best to check with the company you bought it from as they should be able to refill or dispose of it for you.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

Empty gas canisters can be extremely dangerous if disposed of in your recycling or general waste bins and could explode or hurt someone.

Never put any of these in the residual/black waste bin

    • Portable batteries (found in laptops/cell phones/hearing aids/watches/portable cameras/torches/electric toothbrushes/razors/hand-held vacuum cleaners), rechargeable batteries and domestic batteries (AA/AAA/9 volt) – Recycle them at most shops and supermarkets which sell batteries or take them to the Household Recycling Centres
    • Small household fire extinguishers – take them to the HRCs
    • Non-refillable gas bottle canisters (used for small cooking heaters BBQ) – IF they have no fluid or gas inside, recycle them with plastics and cans at kerbside BUT if they have anything left in them, take them to HRCs

For a full list of what can be recycled in Wrexham, take a look at this handy guide.

  • Public Briefing Note – 07.08.20

    Public Briefing Note – 07.08.20

This note provides an update on the information posted on this blog on 31.07.20.

    Key messages for this week

    • As the town centre, pubs and restaurants continue to re-open please enjoy but enjoy responsibly, we will take action where legal restrictions are being broken to protect the health of residents and employees
    • We’re continuing to re-open services
    • Birth Registrations
    • Please remember to continue to follow all the guidelines to Keep Wrexham Safe

But first – a thank you from the Leader and Chief Executive….

“Once again we’re delighted to offer our huge thanks to everyone in Wrexham for their continued support of the efforts that are going into re-opening our services.

The amount of risk assessments that are being undertaken is incredibly high but absolutely essential if we are to continue to keep our staff and customers staff and credit must also go to our staff who are undertaking this mammoth task.

Life will remain very different for some time to come and we must all continue to be vigilant to the ever present of Covid-19 if we wish to Keep Wrexham Safe.

The successful outcome to the easy access testing centres at Caia Park and Hightown last week shown 11 people out of almost 1400 tested were found to have Covid-19 and they have now gone through the Test, Trace and Protect system and people are now self-isolating where necessary.

It was an excellent result and we continue to liaise with Public Health Wales (PHW) and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to monitor what’s going on in Wrexham and we are ready to take any further action quickly should it become necessary.

Thank you all: Ian Bancroft, Chief Execuctive, Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council.

    We’re continuing to re-open services

This week saw the re-opening of Wrexham County Borough Museum and Archives and Caffi Cyfle at Alyn Waters Country Park. We’re now working on leisure facilities opening from August 17 and various other services and we’ll bring you news of these as soon as we have confirmed dates.

Across the county borough pubs re-opened their doors to customers for the first time since March and we’re pleased that the majority are taking precautions to keep everyone safe.

Sadly, following the opening of drinking establishments to their beer gardens, two failed to comply, even after a warning. They have now been issued with non-compliance notices and our Licensing department will keep a regular check on these and all similar establishments to ensure they take all the necessary precautions.

    Birth Registrations

The Registration Service recommenced registration of births last Monday, August 3, for babies born in Ysbyty Maelor, Wrecsam.

To keep customers and staff safe during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and to use our limited resources in the best way possible, we have made changes to the service.

Reminder – reliable sources of information about Covid-19

Latest information on the virus and what people should do about it is provided by:

  • Stone snakes at Alyn Waters!

    Stone snakes at Alyn Waters!

During the lockdown many local park visitors have been decorating stones to add to the stone snakes on both the Llay and Gwersyllt sides of Alyn Waters Country Park.

These fantastic pieces of spontaneous environmental art will soon be slithering off to be relocated in a slightly safer location in the parks to act as a reminder of the creative spirit, which has helped us all through the lockdown.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

Park staff, visitors and local councillors have all suggested that the snakes should be rescued from the winter mud and puddles because they are too good to ‘return to nature’ just yet!

    Alyn Waters

If you would like to add a decorated stone to the snakes they will remain in situ for the next few weeks.

The stones of the Gwersyllt/Bradley snake will be collected for relocation near tp the visitor centre on Wednesday, August 26, and the Llay snake will be collected the following week on Wednesday, September 2, to be relocated in the park.

    Alyn Waters

If you do not want your stone to be part of the relocated ‘covid coils’ then please feel free to collect them before these dates.

  • Have you planned your night out?

Have you planned your night out?

Lots of  pubs in the town centre and rural areas will be opening their doors to customers to enjoy a drink inside for the first time this weekend – they will have safety measures in place to ensure your safety and the safety of their staff.

As there will be restrictions in the numbers of customers allowed in all premises please plan your night out carefully if you are intending to go out this weekend or in the future.

Establishments may look very different – there could be screens in place where social distancing cannot be guaranteed or to protect staff or you may not be able to use cash or go to the bar.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

Many pubs will be only open to people who have pre-booked, you will also not be able to stand and drink either inside or outside licensed premises, you will be asked to give personal details so the Test Track and Protect system continues to work well should any Covid-19 positive cases be identified in any establishment you may have visited. If you don’t give your details you could be refused entry. You will also be expected to stick to the social distancing that will be in place.

Many pubs have already been visited by our Licensing team and advised of what they should be doing to maintain social distancing and hygiene.

Please check before you go out where’s open, do they have any special arrangements in place for booking beforehand?

If an establishment looks too busy then please don’t visit as this may cause unnecessary problems for staff who may have to ask you to leave.

Please remember that there are no public toilets available in the town centre.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Mark Pritchard, said “We have taken the decision to maintain free parking in our car parks in the town centre in order to support the wide variety of independent traders who are based here. ”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Development, said: “Wrexham has an excellent independent base of traders who deserve the support of people in Wrexham to help them move forward following the strict lockdown. They have gone to a lot of trouble to ensure the are able to open safely and we have also supported that work with town centre signage, a one way system on Bank Street and social distancing wardens. • Two premises served with “Compliance Notices” after ignoring social distancing guidelines

Two premises served with “Compliance Notices” after ignoring social distancing guidelines

Not sticking to social distancing guidance has landed two licensed premises in Wrexham with “Compliance Notices” after initial warnings were ignored.

Working with North Wales Police, the Council’s Licensing department has been visiting licensed premises over the last three weeks to remind those in charge of their obligation to ensure that social distancing is in hand to provide a safe environment for staff and customers.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

The two affected premises have now received their “Compliance Notice” and will be kept under scrutiny by licensing. If they continue to flout the rules they risk being prosecuted.

“No excuse for ignoring public safety”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communties, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, says: “We know that licensed premises have had a difficult time during the lockdown but that’s no excuse for ignoring public safety requirements, particularly after warnings had been given.

“I hope this serves as a warning to all who have a responsibility for the safety of their staff and customers that we will take action. Coronavirus is still amongst us and we all need to remain vigilant to this. Social distancing and hand hygiene are two of the key messages we are trying to get across to everyone in order to continue to keep Wrexham safe.”

Inspections of licensed premises have been taking place since the Welsh Government allowed premises to reopen outside areas. Pubs and bars have been able to open indoors from August 3, with measures in place to control social distancing. Reports show that there has generally been a high level of compliance despite a few isolated incidents where the rules were not being applied.

  • At the End of the Rainbow – Food Bags Scheme providing lifeline during lockdown

At the End of the Rainbow – Food Bags Scheme providing lifeline during lockdown

During lockdown people across Wrexham started to do things differently and here at Wrexham Council teams worked in partnership with the voluntary services to make sure no child went hungry.

The scheme was named ‘At the End of the Rainbow’ (AER) after consultation with children and one of them even designed this great logo 🙂

    Food bag Scheme

The staffing of the AER Food Bags scheme is made up of 3 Teams; Wrexham Family Information Service (with support from other Children’s Services staff), the School Meals Catering Service and AVOW staff and volunteers.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

The scheme started at the beginning of May and will run until the end of August. In addition to the food bags, families also received craft bags and information about sources of help and advice if they need it.

220 food bags per week to families

The scheme is now delivering approximately 220 food bags per week to families who need them all across Wrexham, with each bag containing enough food for one school aged child for breakfast and lunch for 5 days.

The AER Teams have received lots of positive feedback from families about the food bags, including the following comments:

“The food is delicious and the bread is the nicest bread ever. The delivery is very much appreciated.”

“It was lovely and really helpful and grand. No waste whatsoever”.  Mum was really positive and grateful and thanked us.

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Children’s Services, said: “It was extremely important that vulnerable children across Wrexham continued to receive enough food to keep them healthy and to relieve stress on their parents. The AER teams should be extremely proud of what they have and continue to achieve. Thank you to everyone that has been involved in this successful partnership work to bring this essential service to our children and their parents.”
