Women councillors, we want you in 2022

A cross party group of women Councillors in Wrexham are calling for more female candidates to stand in the next council elections in 2022. The call is driven by the fact that only 10 out of Wrexhams 52 Councillors are women, a level of 19% which is below the Welsh average.

Event organiser Cllr Adrienne Jeorrett said ” We’re working cross party to encourage more women to put their names forward as candidates next time around, if 50% of the local population are women then it’s important our politics locally is also representative. That sadly isn’t the case at the moment but it’s something we hope to change with events like the one we have planned on International Women’s Day at Ty Pawb.”

Cllr Carrie Harper added: ” Women bring a new perspective to the political table and more women in the Guildhall is something Wrexham could really benefit from. There are some great male councillors too but it’s clear we need a better balance than we have at the moment. We want to tell people as loudly as we can that you don’t have to be male, white and retired to do this job.”

Cllr Sonia Benbow Jones said: “We’re encouraging women from all backgrounds, whether they want to stand for a poltical party or as Independents to come along to the event. It’s a chance for people to ask us about what it’s like to be a Councillor and for us to explain why we feel it’s so important more women throw their hat in the ring in 2022″.

Fellow organiser Cllr Gwenfair Jones added: ” We’re hoping for a good turn out for this first event but are also hoping to organise more in the run up to 2022. We’re also happy to come and speak to other local groups about this in the future and they’re very welcome to get in touch.”

The ‘Women councillors we want you in 2022’ event will be held in Ty Pawb on Sunday 8th March in Gallery 2 between 12pm and 1pm. It’s part of a series of events at the venue for International Women’s Day.

  • Executive Board set to vote on new benefits for Foster Carers

Executive Board set to vote on new benefits for Foster Carers

Senior councillors are set to discuss plans to adopt two new beneficial policies for our foster carers in Wrexham county borough. The Council Tax Discretionary Discount Scheme for foster carers and the Foster Friendly policy for Wrexham Council staff will be discussed in the Executive Board meeting on March 10.

The Council Tax Discretionary Discount Scheme would allow all foster carers approved by Wrexham Council to be eligible for a 75% reduction in their net council tax. The aim is to encourage prospective foster carers who live in the Wrexham area to apply with Wrexham County Borough Council rather than Independent Fostering Agencies. This policy would also make being a foster carer for Wrexham Council more attractive to potential foster carers and ensure that local children are kept in the Wrexham area which is vital to their sense of identity and provides continuity in education, health and community.

SIGN UP TO PAY FOR GREEN BIN COLLECTION

The councillors will also be discussing a fostering friendly policy for Wrexham Council Staff. It would mean that all council employees who are approved or being assessed as foster carers with Wrexham Council will be entitled to up to 5 days extra annual leave to enable them to attend relevant meetings and training sessions in their role as foster carers.

These policies will assist with the recruitment and retention of foster carers living in Wrexham and will reduce the number of children placed with independent fostering agencies outside of the county borough. It will also improve the outcomes for looked after children and reduce the financial and resource implications of children being placed in external provision and ‘out of borough’ placements.

It will also provide rewards and benefits which aid the recruitment of council employees as well as improving the retention of current foster carers.

If you want to read the full agenda you can do so here.

Don’t forget the date: March 10 at the Guildhall.

Members of the public are welcome to attend. The meeting is also webcast and you can watch live here.

  • Wrexham Gateway – vision for Mold Road area is moving forward

Wrexham Gateway – vision for Mold Road area is moving forward

Last summer we announced plans for a major regeneration of the Mold Road area into Wrexham in order to see it transformed into a bustling hub of sporting, commercial, residential and retail activity bringing with it huge economic benefits to the town.

Included in the plans are the redevelopment of the Kop at the Racecourse stadium in order to increase seating and allow the venue to be used for major sporting international events. The provision of a four star hotel and conference facility as well as improvements to the train station allowing improved access to the town centre and Glyndŵr University are also part of the proposals.

Since that announcement all the partners involved, ourselves, The Welsh Government, Wrexham AFC and Wrexham Glyndŵr University have continued to work on the plans to measure what is possible and if so what would be required to take them to the stage where they could be delivered.

Following that work the partners involved have agreed that the proposals are feasible and, with the necessary finances in place, long-standing plans for the area can be a reality.

The Welsh Government’s Minister for North Wales, Ken Skates has now approved the budget provision for initial site acquisitions associated with the emerging proposals which is another step forward for the Wrexham Gateway project.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council, said: “I am very pleased that plans are progressing very well and that the ambitious proposals set out last year are feasible. I would like to thank our partners for their support thus far and to assure them of our commitment to achieving the ambitious plans we have laid out.

Ken Skates, Welsh Government Minister for Economy, Transport and North Wales, who visited the area recently, said: “The Wrexham Gateway project is a clear demonstration of our commitment to bringing forward the redevelopment of the area. I am pleased to approve the budget provision for initial site acquisitions and I look forward to seeing this important project move forward.”

Spencer Harris, Director of Wrexham AFC “The Racecourse Ground is of strategic importance to Wrexham, North Wales and indeed the whole of Wales. It is very exciting to know that, after many years of speculation, plans to see the venue into a 15,000 seat international level venue, are set to be taken forward. It’s very encouraging to see the commitment of all the partners and the scale of the regeneration together we are determined to bring to Wrexham.”

Maria Hinfelaar, Vice-Chancellor of Wrexham Glyndŵr University said, “I am very pleased to be working with our partners to create a very much improved gateway into Wrexham that will provide visitors, students and residents to Wrexham with an excellent view of the town and a superb gateway into the town itself. The Wrexham Gateway Partnership dovetails with the University’s Campus 2025 Masterplan and it is exciting to see how we can work together to transform the town.”

  • LED upgrade at school’s dual-use sports centre is de-LIGHT-ful

LED upgrade at school’s dual-use sports centre is de-LIGHT-ful

Ysgol Rhiwabon has recently benefitted from an upgrade to the lighting of its dual-use sport centre, with LED lighting being installed at the facility over the half term period.

The new LED lighting comes with sensor technology, and the school will see a vast improvement to both energy efficiency and performance.

The sport centre’s entrance and stairs have also been upgraded, with new flooring being fitted to these areas.

Freedom Leisure Centre Manager David Watkin, said: “The investment at Ruabon has seen lighting levels in the hall improve dramatically. With an option to adjust to 1200lux this replicates daylight conditions. This is above the recommended lighting levels for regional cricket development and will ensure Ruabon remains a regional Hub for all cricket coaching within North Wales.”

    Almost £120,000 investment

The improvement came as part of a project that is supported by Freedom Leisure and Wrexham Council, which will see lighting replacements in five of our dual-use centres.

Almost £120,000 has been invested into the project, with the other school sport centres benefitting from the project being at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Ysgol Clywedog, Rhosnesni High School and Darland High School.

Mrs Melanie Ferron-Evans, Headteacher at Ysgol Rhiwabon, said: ”We’re delighted with the investment made by WCBC and Freedom Leisure in our sports centre lighting improvements. The benefits are not only the increased light coverage and quality, but also the reduction in our carbon footprint as a school. Our Sports Department is one of the strongest and really does appreciate the excellent facilities that they have for the use of our students.”

Emma Williams, Energy Efficiency Officer for Wrexham Council, said: “It’s great news that the new LED lights have now been installed at Ysgol Rhiwabon; the school and users of the facility have already noticed a great improvement. We hope the substantial investment to improve the dual-use sport centres will continue to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings, and support our work in delivering Decarbonisation.”

  • £16.9m to improve and refurbish our sheltered housing

£16.9m to improve and refurbish our sheltered housing

There’s good news today as we can announce that £16.9 million is to be spent on remodelling and refurbishing our Sheltered Housing over the next 5 years, with a longer term provision included within the 30 year Housing Revenue Account Business Plan.

As the population of Wrexham continues to grow and, in line with the rest of the country, the number of older people increases there will be further demand for sheltered housing.

SIGN UP TO PAY FOR GREEN BIN COLLECTION

We currently haves 656 units of sheltered accommodation within 22 separate sheltered housing schemes.  This makes up 6% of our total stock.

The majority of this sheltered stock was built in 1960’s and 70’s and contains a mixture of bedsit accommodation and small flats.

We’ve taken a good look at this stock and we now have the information needed about its long term future and the amount of investment required to remodel the schemes to meet future needs.

    Remodel the sheltered housing schemes

The capital investment required to remodel the sheltered housing schemes was approved by Executive Board and a major programme has started which will increase the size standards of the flats, improve the energy efficiency of the schemes and modernise the communal areas.

Ellis Williams Architects has been appointed to design and manage the remodeling of two sheltered schemes at Llys y Mynydd, Rhos and Tir y Capel, Llay.  Both schemes consist of small one bedroom accommodation which fail to meet the aspirations of many of today’s older people in terms of design, space, accessibility and energy efficiency.

All the tenants currently in these schemes have been kept fully informed of the plans and have been assured that any moves they may have to make in order to make sure the improvement works go ahead quickly and efficiently and will take their wishes into account.

They will incur no costs during the process and they will of course be able to return to their homes when the work is completed if they wish to.

“Long term programme of investing in our sheltered housing schemes”

Cllr David Griffiths, Lead Member for Housing, said: “I am pleased to announce that we have made the commitment to carry out the remodelling and refurbishment of our sheltered stock schemes across the County Borough.  This long term programme of investing in our sheltered housing schemes, will help older people remain independent in their own homes for longer.”
