    Working with young people to prevent offending and re-offending

    This blog is one of a number of stories we will be posting about Youth Work Week 2019

    Wrexham Youth Justice Service (YJS) works with children and young people aged 10 – 17 years in order to prevent offending and re-offending.

    It’s an agency team of professional staff who work within the Youth Justice system, and receive funding from the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales, Welsh Assembly Government and local Strategic Partnerships.

    The team works closely with the Youth Courts and implements a range of statutory orders that the Courts impose. This includes working with young people who are sent to custody and their resettlement back into the community upon their release.

    The YJS delivers an Out- of Court disposal process, called ‘The Bureau’. We work closely with North Wales Police to assess the young person and their offending behaviour and liaise with their victims when appropriate, with a view to finding a restorative solution, resulting in the young person not going to court. The YJS delivers a range of interventions with the young person, including advice and guidance offered to parents/ carers, to prevent further offending.

    There is a growing number of volunteers, who offer support to the team by undertaking a variety of roles that include ‘The Bureau Panel, Appropriate Adult and Referral Panel Members. People of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to become involved.

    A major focus of the work is enabling young people to take responsibility for their behaviour and actions, and understand the harm that their offending causes others. We work closely with victims and encourage young people to undertake activities that repair the harm to individuals and to the wider community.

    TIC to relocate early 2020

    Wrexham’s Tourist Information Centre (TIC) is on the move as it’s confirmed that it will move from its current base in Queens square to Chester Street.

    The demand for visitor information and local food and drink has increased over the last few years as more day and staying visitors choose Wrexham County as a place to visit. In addition, a large part of the Local Authority’s tourism work has focussed upon supporting local food & drink producers raise their profile by stocking their goods in the centre.

    “One million visitors”

    Having opened in 1991, the TIC hit its one-million visitor mark in 2015 and continues to welcome both local and overseas visitors to town, many of whom visit attractions such as St Giles Parish Church, the football club, Wrexham Museum, Tŷ Pawb and Techniquest Glyndwr. Events have also played a large role in the growth of the visitor economy (today worth almost £120m per year) with the Victorian Christmas Market, the Wrexham Food and Drink festival and FOCUS Wales notably swelling numbers.

    The new TIC will be based in both units formerly leased by the Oriel Wrexham shop before their relocation within Tŷ Pawb. The units are due to be knocked together to create more floor space which will allow the team to stock their current range of tickets, non-refrigerated ales, local gins and souvenirs – plus new fresh produce. In addition, the unit will also have a flexible pop-up space for local food producers, cooking space to host chef demonstration evenings and private office and meeting space.

    “Fastest growing parts of the economy”

    Speaking about the new move, Lead Member for the Economy Cllr Terry Evans added; “It’s our aim as a Council to support tourism which has been one of our fastest growing parts of the economy in recent years. The town centre is now identified as a main visitor hub for the County and therefore we want to have a first class welcome with a quality, spacious TIC. This will also complement the relocation of Techniquest Glyndwr as they embark on relocating to Chester Street and of course Tŷ Pawb.”

    Chair of the This Is Wrexham Tourist Board Sam Regan also commented; “It’s a real sign of intent from the Council to continue their support for the tourism industry here in Wrexham with their investment in this move, plus it will create a first-class space for local food & drink providers to market their products in the town centre.”

    Architects plans are currently being reviewed and if all goes well, the move to the former Oriel Wrexham site on Chester Street will be complete this winter.

    The move supports the Destination Management Action Plan and the news that Techniquest will relocate to the former TJ Hughes building.

    This blog is one of a number of stories we will be posting about Youth Work Week 2019.

    Community youth work provides young people with a sense of freedom and security, enabling them to meet up, make friends, express themselves and have new experiences outside of school. In doing so, we support young people through the up’s and down’s of adolescence and aim to increase their sense of attachment to their local communities.

    Youth work provision can be developed in traditional youth club settings as well as from more bespoke places and spaces within local communities.  Community based youth work starts where young people “are at” and is based on voluntary engagement between young people and staff.

    Wrexham County Borough Council work with young people between the ages of 11 – 25 years old, however community based youth work focusses on teenagers.  At present Wrexham Play and Youth Support Team, deliver youth work provision in a variety of local communities including:

    Brymbo, Tanyfron, Bwlchgwyn, Minera, Coedpoeth, Llay, Ruabon and Rhosllanerchrugog. .  In some communities this work is funded by Community Council as part of their ongoing commitment and support to their local community and young people.

    Have you ventured to the South Arcade in Tŷ Pawb?

    Funnily enough, it is the busiest entrance into Tŷ Pawb with hundreds of you using the entrance off Chester Street every week.

    But, do you know what unique businesses are there? There are tables and chairs for you to enjoy a snack and a drink from Café in the Corner. And, have you taken a moment to look up and take in the old hippodrome light that hangs from the ceiling?

    The South Arcade is a bustling nook of Tŷ Pawb and includes traders such as Dexterity Ink, Gemini Blinds, Café in the Corner, Gallery 01, Karma Wellbeing, DJ Carpets and Wrexham Jewellery Repairs.

    We went to have a chat with one of the traders, an artist from Dexterity Ink, to see what he thinks of Tŷ Pawb and Wrexham….

    Wrexham Council buys properties from local developer

    The properties are two bedroom and have a lounge, kitchen diner, downstairs toilet, plenty of storage, a driveway and a secure spacious garden.

    This is the first purchase of its kind for the Council, who are delivering a Build and Buy Programme which includes also, buying back ex local authority properties, building new council housing and working with developers to provide social housing on new build developments.

    World Heritage Site fun day on the way this weekend

    There’s a community fun day on the way to mark 10 years since the inscription of a World Heritage Site right on our doorstep.

    Thursday, June 27 will mark 10 years since the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and an 11-mile area from Shropshire to Denbighshire was inscribed as a World Heritage Site (WHS) by UNESCO.

    A World Heritage Site fun day will be held at Trevor Basin from 2pm until 6pm on Saturday, June 29, to mark the 10 year anniversary of the UNESCO inscription.

    There’ll be a load of activities on offer throughout the day for families to enjoy – including a community dance project, circus skill training, music, mini golf, community stalls and even the chance to take part in the Big Build LEGO workshop to build the Pontycysyllte Aqueduct in miniature.

    There’ll also be the chance to step on to canal boats, and try your hand at paddling in coracles and canoes – and Techniquest Glyndŵr will be on hand providing insight on building aqueducts and bridges.

    But the celebrations won’t stop with the community fun day.

    The fun, music and bright lights of Underneath the Arches are on the way and the aqueduct’s 10th year anniversary will also be represented at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

    And as part of the celebrations, we’re also inviting children to take part in a poetry contest, which could see them winning a trip along the Llangollen Canal in a horse-drawn boat – find out more details about the children’s poetry competition on the Glandŵr Cymru website.

    The World Heritage Site stretches 11 miles from Gledrid in Shropshire, through the Wrexham County Borough to Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen in Denbighshire.

    This event is organised by the Canal & River Trust, Denbighshire Countryside Service and Wrexham County Borough Council as part of the Pontcysyllte aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site anniversary celebrations, and has received funding via the Regional Tourism Engagement Fund (RTEF) and supported through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and the Welsh Government, the Fund to improve the visitor experience and create stronger destinations by working together, Visit Wales and The National Lottery Heritage Fund through Our Picturesque Landscape Project.

    Counselling support for young people in Wrexham

    This blog is one of a number of stories we will be posting about Youth Work Week 2019

    Our young people’s counselling team, Outside In, works across Wrexham, with services provided at eight primary schools, all of our secondary schools and the Info Shop on Lambpit Street which offers sessions up to the age of 25.

    The team is made up of experienced counsellors, all of whom can tailor their sessions according to each individual’s needs and wishes.

    Young people can be referred to counsellors by school staff, pupils themselves, parents, school nurses and others.

    Each young person receives an individualised approach to attaining their goals, which could be helping them to reduce social isolation, specific work on confidence and self-esteem, managing their emotions including anger, bullying, and/ or self-harm.

    Counselling is extremely important because we need to take care of ourselves both mentally and physically. Counselling can support young people with education, training and employment, relationships and many other areas of their life that they may not feel able to speak to anyone else about, such as LGBT issues, gender identity, sexuality, family issues, and anxiety.

    Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, said: “The Outside In team does incredible work in providing a reassuring and confidential setting for young people to discuss a variety of issues that may be causing mental health conditions, or other problems in their day-to-day lives.

    “Any young person who thinks that they might benefit from some counselling should get in touch – there’s no need for them to stay silent or feel alone.”

    Drop In

    There is also a counselling drop in session at the INFO shop from 10am until 12pm every Tuesday.  This gives young people the opportunity to speak to a counsellor and for the counsellor to assess the needs of the young person who may be in crisis or requiring additional support.
