    Calling little scribblers!

Do you know a child that could write a truly amazing story?

If you do, they could bag 480 books for their school*, along with a RocketBook and a £50 Amazon voucher for themselves.

Welsh Libraries have teamed up with their friends, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, to help raise awareness about dementia and they need incredible stories.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

Think about some of your favourite memories…a trip to the seaside with your grandad, baking with gran or maybe even fighting dragons at a castle! Now, could wonderful memories be turned into a spectacular story?

Every day, 480 people across the UK develop dementia, and memory loss plays a part in someone’s journey with dementia.

Stories will be judged by authors and people living with dementia across Wales, and they will award the first prize and prizes for two lucky runners-up.

Closing date for entries is August 15, 2019 and stories can be sent in from children and young people under 16.

Stories are to be handed in to your local library – no longer than 480 words. Entries need to have the writers name, age and school (class name too) at the end of the story. We welcome stories written in any language. We would also love to see illustrations to go with the story!! Stories can also be emailed as a Word document to dementiafriendly@cardiff.gov.uk

We look forward to reading all about lots of wonderful memories.

*Welsh Libraries will work closely with the winning school to carefully select the 480 books. For more details, please contact dementiafriendly@cardiff.gov.uk

11-25? Be a part of the important issues!

This week is Youth Work Week and throughout the week we will be publishing articles about the different areas of youth work the council provides and supports.

This first article is focusing on the Senedd Yr Ifanc (Wrexham Youth Parliament).

So, what’s the aim of Senedd Yr Ifanc?

Senedd Yr Ifanc works hard to tackle the issues that are important to people aged 11-25. The aim is to give young people a place at the debating table when it comes to the big changes that could affect the rest of their lives.

GET PUBLIC PROTECTION EMAIL ALERTS NOW!

    When do they meet?

The Senedd meets every last Monday of the month in Wrexham Guildhall. The meetings are structured with formal and informal sections. During a Senedd meeting professionals will come to speak to the Senedd to gather the views and opinions of specific issues. Senedd meetings can also include debates, issue based work groups, training, consultations and much more.

How do I become a representative?

Any young person can become a representative of the Senedd.  They will be responsible for ensuring that the views of other young people from their group, forum, school etc. are considered in matters affecting young people across the county. As a representative, they are also responsible for feeding any information, answers and updates from the Senedd back to youth groups, forum, school etc.

The Senedd gives young people the chance to have their say and a voice on matters that affect them.

  • Food waste recycling – some handy tips

Food waste recycling – some handy tips

Do you recycle food waste? In Wrexham, with weekly collections, free caddies and free caddy liners, it’s definitely easier than ever to recycle your leftovers.

With that in mind, we thought we’d give you a short list of handy tips to help you become a recycling superhero.

And even if you already recycle food, you still might find some of these tips useful 🙂

WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

    Handy tips

Having a barbecue? Take your food caddy outside with you and pop any bones or leftovers inside as you go along. It makes cleaning up afterwards much easier…just make sure you shut the lid to avoid any pesky flies.

Running low on caddy liners? Tie an empty liner to your caddy handle on your collection day and we’ll leave you a new roll. Simple as that!

Enjoy a morning brew? Tea bags can be recycled in your food caddy. More of a coffee person? Well, the same goes for any leftover/out of date coffee granules too.

Got something going mouldy in your fridge? Pop it in a caddy liner and put it straight into your larger food caddy ready to be collected. Remember your caddy gets emptied every week…if you put in your black bin, it’ll sit there for a couple of weeks and get stinky.

Got an uneaten ready meal? All the food is recyclable in your food caddy, plus you can recycle any cardboard boxes and plastic trays too…just make sure they’re clean when you recycle them.

Fancy an ice lolly? When it’s sunny, most of us are partial to an ice lolly, but what do you do with the wooden stick? Because these, like any wooden cutlery, can be recycled in your food caddy!

Got a fussy family member that doesn’t eat all the food you make for them? Whether it’s your grandkid, child or sibling, make sure the leftovers get recycled in your food caddy.

Fancy giving our one-week challenge a go? This is for the people that don’t currently recycle food…yes, we can hear you – “I don’t recycle food because I don’t really have any leftovers”. Give food recycling a go for a week, you’ll be surprised by how many leftovers you actually have. You can order a caddy for free from our website if you need one.

You can view a detailed list of what can be recycled as food waste here.

    “A number of benefits”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport says, “More and more people are starting to recycle their food waste, but we know that we can do even better. There are a number of benefits to recycling your food waste, such as weekly collections and free caddy liners, and we want to encourage people to take advantage of these.”

Another one of these benefits is having extra space in your black bin…find out why ‘Space Is Ace’ by taking our fun recycling quiz.

  • WATCH: Pupils get taste of the opportunities and benefits of using Welsh in the Workplace

WATCH: Pupils get taste of the opportunities and benefits of using Welsh in the Workplace

Getting more and more children to speak Welsh is one of our key aims.

But as well as getting them to speak it in the classroom, we also want to give primary school pupils the chance to see just how important and useful the Welsh language can be in the world of work – well after school has finished.

With that in mind, we held a series of networking events for a number of primary schools earlier this term.

STAY SAFE – GET THE LATEST ALERTS ON SCAMS, PRODUCT RECALLS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROTECTION ISSUES

The series of meet and greet sessions were held to give pupils a sense of the importance of the Welsh language not just in school, but also in the wider world of work. Pupils also learnt about the opportunities and advantages which Welsh language skills can bring in various types of employment.

The speed networking sessions were organised following the success of similar events last year, through a partnership between our education department, Careers Wales and primary schools.

The innovative sessions took place at Ysgol Grango, Rhos, and Ysgol Rhiwabon, with 17 primary schools from the areas of Rhos, the Ceiriog Valley, Dee Valley, Chirk and Rhiwabon taking part – with more than 330 Year 6 pupils in attendance.

The events were attended by a number of employers, including North Wales Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue, Coleg Cambria, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Wrexham Council, The Principality, Welsh Water, Glyndwr University, Scottish Power, Siop Siwan, Read Construction, Menter Iaith, the Urdd and other local businesses.

Pupils had the chance to interview each of the employers for five minutes each, quizzing them on their roles and how important Welsh is in their day-to-day working lives, and in being able to carry out their jobs.

Emlyn, a Year 6 pupil at St Mary’s School, Ruabon, said: “I really enjoyed the morning – the people were really kind and I loved hearing how important it is to learn and use Welsh.”

One of the sessions at Ysgol Rhiwabon was visited by Welsh Language Commissioner Aled Roberts, himself a former pupil of the school.

Watch the video above to find out what Mr Roberts had to say about the sessions.

After the sessions, pupils were asked to produce work in different media to show what they’d learned during their chats with employers.

A series of follow-up awards ceremonies was held at the Guildhall, Wrexham, to congratulate pupils for their work.

“Important that children see Welsh outside of the classroom”

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, said: “I’m very pleased that these pupils had the chance to meet employees from such a wide range of organisations, and learn just how important the Welsh language can be in the workplace.

“It’s very important that children have the chance to see the importance of Welsh outside of a classroom setting, and as such I’m very grateful to all of those employers who attended throughout the events.

“I’d also like to thank the officers and schools involved for their time and for organising these sessions – this contributes to one of the key objectives of our Welsh Education Strategic Plan (WESP), and we’d certainly be keen to see more events like these take place in future.”

Lesley Lloyd, Business Engagement Adviser for Careers Wales, said: “The volunteer mentors came from quite a diverse range of professional backgrounds.

“The event gave young people exposure to many more insights about people’s career journeys, and shared valuable information about bilingual skills in the world of work and the opportunities using the Welsh language may bring.

“We are pleased to note that supporting organisations indicated their interest, commitment and satisfaction, and are enthusiastic about participating in future Welsh in the Workplace events.”

  • Do you use the loos?

    Do you use the loos?

Do you use any of our public toilets?

As a council, we operate a number of public conveniences throughout the county borough.

As well as some public conveniences in Wrexham town centre, we’re also responsible for those in a number of public buildings – such as leisure centres, community resource centres and libraries – and country parks.

GET PUBLIC PROTECTION EMAIL ALERTS NOW!

Part of our responsibility in running those toilet facilities is to make sure that they’re serving people’s needs – whether they use them often, or just from time to time.

And obviously, we can’t do that if we don’t know what people think of them.

So with that in mind, we’ve started a survey on our public conveniences, open to anyone who wants to take part.

We need to hear from residents, businesses and visitors. We’re keen to hear from anyone who regularly uses our public toilets – or who might rely on specific facilities like disabled toilets or baby changing areas.

If you want to take part, just click on the link here to our Your Voice website.

Paper copies of the survey are also available at our Contact Centre on Lord Street, Wrexham, along with all of our leisure centres and libraries.

The survey will be open until Friday, July 12 – so there’s plenty of time to take part.
