Car parks in the town centre will be free after 11am from October 1 except Tŷ Pawb

We’re reinstating car parking charges in our town centre car parks from October 1 they will be free after 11am except for Tŷ Pawb where normal parking charges will apply all day.

Charges will also be reinstated in our country parks, technology park and Ruabon station but they will not be free after 11am.

Normal charges will apply in town car parks from 8am – 11am.

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council, said: “Free parking has been in place since the end of March in order to support workers providing critical services for the public.

“Reinstate charges in our car parks”

“We suspended car parking charges at the beginning of lock down and continued with the offer as lockdown has gradually been relaxed we continued to offer free parking in order to support town centre traders, particularly independent traders who had been severely affected by the lockdown.

“Unfortunately, the opening up of the town centre has led to free parking being mis-used by many town centre workers and residents and we have now taken the decision to reinstate charging but to allow free parking in the majority of town centre car parks after 11am. This we hope this will encourage visitors to the town centre to support town centre traders.

“I would like to thank staff and fellow coalition members for their support with free parking and the introduction of the free after 11am offer.”

Please be aware that the free after 11am does not apply to Tŷ Pawb.

Time limits in the short stay car parks will apply and should be observed – fines will be issued to vehicles staying longer than permitted in short stay car parks.

There’s also a new Off Street parking places order being introduced at the bus station which will help with the management of the bus station and adjacent disabled bays.

Charges will apply at these disabled bays and they will be enforced like disabled spaces in other council car parks. They will be free after 11am.

Lighting it green for Recycle Week…Be Mighty. Recycle.

You may notice a change to the front of the Guildhall if you walk through Llwyn Isaf during the evenings this week.

Between 21-27 September, the Guildhall balcony is being lit green to celebrate Recycle Week 2020.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

The theme for this year’s Recycle Week is Be Mighty. Recycle.

Cllr David A Bithell, Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “This year in Wales, we’re being asked to ‘Be Mighty. Recycle’. We should be proud of our recycling efforts so far, but we must keep going, and aim to do even better. Let’s continue recycling everything we can, from all around the home, to improve our local recycling figures and help get Wales to number one.”

  • Be fearless in the face of food waste…Be Mighty. Recycle.

Be fearless in the face of food waste…Be Mighty. Recycle.

Recycle Week 2020 is here and in Wales we’re being asked to Be Mighty. Recycle.

Recycling food waste will play a big part in this, and for us to be fearless in the face of food waste, we will all need to take some time to understand everything we can recycle in our food caddies.

Need a food caddy? Order one for free from our website.

Most of us are recycling leftovers…but we can improve

Most of us are now recycling our leftovers in our food caddies and we’re making steady progress in Wrexham. Last year we collected 2,540 tonnes of food waste, which sounds like a lot. However, we know that there are people in Wrexham who continue to put leftovers in their general waste, so there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

Cllr David A Bithell, Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Unfortunately in Wrexham there are a number of us that still aren’t recycling our food waste, and we strongly encourage these people to change their habits; there’s certainly many reasons why they should.

“Along with the large environmental benefits, we offer free caddy liners, and by recycling food you’re freeing up space in your bins. It also helps to stop your bins from smelling from rotting food – remember your food caddy is emptied every week, your general waste isn’t!

“Thanks to everyone who recycles their food waste and to those who don’t, please get involved and play your part. Please take some time to understand what can be recycled in your food caddy…some of the things might surprise you!”

Please dispose of face masks/coverings responsibly

There’s been quite a bit of social media and the news lately about the increase in litter due to face masks or coverings.

Please use general waste bins or take them home to dispose of safely. They should be but into a plastic bag to avoid any further spread of the virus and your hands should be washed or sanitised straight after.

They’re also a danger to wildlife who could easily become entangled in the ties used to hold the mask in place.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment said: “It’s really surprising that people are choosing to just throw their face masks or coverings away. Not only is it littering but it’s putting others at risk of contamination. They’re not difficult to dispose of so please act responsibly and don’t discard them anywhere but in a bag then in a bin.

  • Be Mighty. Recycle. Top 3 is great, but let’s aim for number 1!

Be Mighty. Recycle. Top 3 is great, but let’s aim for number 1!

Today is the first day of Recycle Week 2020 (September 21-27), and in Wales we’ve already got a lot to be proud of.

Wales may be a small country, but when it comes to recycling, we punch way above our weight. We’re already the third best recyclers in the world, and now Wrexham Council is backing the Wales-wide movement to make us first.

    Let’s do this together 😊

The world needs mighty now, more than ever…

In Wrexham, our most recent recycling figure was 69.62%, which, when you consider we were recycling just 3% back in 2002, shows that we’re well on the right track. But we’re now looking to go the extra mile and we want you to come on that journey with us.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

Cllr David A Bithell, Deputy Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “Recycle Week is the perfect time to remind ourselves about the things we can or can’t recycle. We understand there’s a lot for people to remember and this can sometimes seem overwhelming, but we all need to get involved.

“This year in Wales, we’re being asked to ‘Be Mighty. Recycle’. We should be proud of our recycling efforts so far, but we must keep going, and aim to do even better. Let’s continue recycling everything we can, from all around the home, to improve our local recycling figures and help get Wales to number one.”

Mighty tips to get Wales to number one

Here’s some valuable tips that can help us reach to get even better:

    • Recycling our food waste is one of the easiest ways to give our recycling rate a big boost. Put any food waste – however small the amount – in your food waste caddy to ensure it gets collected every week
    • Recycling doesn’t stop at the kitchen door – remember to recycle from other rooms too. You’d be amazed just how much bathroom waste such as empty shampoo, conditioner, hand soap and shower gel bottles can be recycled
    • Most people know that water bottles, cans, and paper and card can be recycled, but don’t forget that you can also recycle more unusual items such as empty aerosols. And if you’re not sure what you can and can’t recycle visit wrexham.gov.uk/recycling
    • Squash plastic bottles and cardboard to save space in your recycling bag, bin, box or caddy
    • Give bottles, cans, trays and tubs a quick rinse before recycling them to remove any food waste – there’s no need to use running water, a quick swill in the washing up bowl will do
    • If Wales is going to get to number one, we all have to play our part. That means spreading the mighty movement word on social media by sharing your recycling pics and tips using the #mightyrecyclers hashtag

We’re going to bring you more information on how you can Be Mighty throughout the week too, so stay tuned 😊

Improvement Notice Served on Penny Black to protect customers and staff

An Improvement Notice has been served to Penny Black for failing to take reasonable measures to minimise the risk of being exposed to Coronavirus on its premises and to people queuing outside.

They have also failed to change the layout of premises in order to limit close face to face contact.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

The Improvement Notice means they must comply with social distancing measures or further action will be taken to protect the health of public and staff.

The Council’s Licensing team are now working with the Licensee to support them in making improvements to keep everyone safe.

Customers are reminded not to venture out to licensed premises in groups of more than 6 persons from a household/extended household group.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “It’s disappointing that the licensee has failed to protect the health of staff and customers and officers were left with no choice but to issue an Improvement Notice.

“I would like to remind everyone that Coronavirus is still in our communities and we all need to stay vigilant to its presence in order to Keep Wrexham Safe. We want to avoid the type of local lockdowns that have been seen in South Wales and the North East of England where some recently gained freedoms have now been lost.

“Our officers will continue to monitor premises and will not hesitate to take action when necessary.”

‘A celebration of the creativity, innovation and resilience’

Wrexham County Borough Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, Cllr Hugh Jones, said: “We are delighted to be able to welcome visitors safely back to Tŷ Pawb’s galleries and also to give artists the opportunity to show their work in a gallery setting once again.

“The effects of COVID-19 have meant exhibitions being cancelled or postponed across the country since March of this year. Artists have been turning to new methods of display as a result.

“Throughout this period, Tŷ Pawb has offered an excellent online Arts At Home programme that has included live streaming music performances, online arts activities for families and innovative Creative Assignments developed with artists across Wales. The activities have been very well received and we are very pleased to announce that many of the works created by participants will be on show at the Tŷ Pawb Open.”

“The exhibition will be a celebration of the creativity, innovation and resilience that has been developed by artists in lockdown over the last few months.

“We have been phenomenally impressed with the huge variety and high standard of all the entries. The exhibition will include over 120 artworks across a whole range of artistic mediums from paint and sculpture to print and video so there will be something here for everyone to enjoy.”

Don’t forget – parking enforcement is taking place so please park responsibly

As the town centre businesses re-open and more people are now visiting the area we’re reminding drivers that parking enforcement is taking place.

You can still park for free in all council owned town centre car parks but please park in car parks and observe the maximum stay time limits so that there is a availability of spaces in short stay car parks as visitors come to town to support the town centre economy. Also ensure that you are observing the maximum time allowed to stay in the free limited waiting bays that are dotted about the town centre.

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

Parking Enforcement Officers will be out and about monitoring this and will be issuing fines for anyone abusing the time limits in the short stay car parks and limited waiting bays.

They’ll also continue to issue fines for anyone not parked in a legitimate parking space such as on double yellow lines, disabled bays without a blue badge and parking in pedestrianised areas at the wrong times or on pavements. So to avoid a fine please park responsibly.

Car parks that are free until the end of September are:

    • Crescent Road
    • Guildhall
    • Library
    • Market Street
    • Tŷ Pawb

You can also take advantage of the 30 minute Click and Collect free parking bays on the High Street if you’re popping into one of the markets to pick up pre-ordered goods.

  • Keep your social distance plea in North Wales

Keep your social distance plea in North Wales

Organisations across North Wales are working together to remind young people of the need for social distancing in the region and to help the fight against covid.

Whilst the vast majority of people across the region adhere to social distancing guidelines, anecdotal evidence shows not all young people are following the message –reflecting concerns raised nationally.

The guidance from Welsh Government for people to adhere to two metre social distancing remains, as does the advice for people to follow hygiene guidelines. From today (Monday), it is mandatory for everyone over 11 years of age to wear face masks in shops.  The Welsh Government has also announced that no more than six people from extended households can meet indoors at any one time (this does not count children aged 10 and under)

No matter how mild your symptoms are, you should get a test for Coronavirus

Councillor Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, said: “We’re pleased to be taking part  in this campaign which will run across North Wales. Wrexham and North Wales communities have played their part in trying to stop the spread of Covid-19 but as we gradually gain some of the freedoms we lost during lockdown we really must take extra special care.

“It’s now more important than ever that we continue to social distance. Covid-19 is still with us and we don’t be facing a second wave in the Autumn – now is the time for everyone to play their part.

“There’s evidence across Wales and unfortunately, here in Wrexham that people are not continuing to social distance and we hope that they will now take notice. Our social media messages and contacts with young people and youth organisations can only do so much to encourage everyone to take responsibility for their behaviour and continue to social distance.

“We’re all in this together so we all need to work with each other to try and prevent the covid rates from escalating in Wrexham and North Wales.”
