Village shop caught selling alcohol without a licence

The proprietor of the a convenience store in New Broughton was recently prosecuted after licensing officers found the shop to be selling alcohol without the required alcohol licence.

The court  issued fines and costs of  £1231 with a victim surcharge of £184.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

The court heard that the holder of the licence had held a licence previously but this had lapsed due to the annual fee not being paid.

The council had sent several reminders to the licensee but the fee remained unpaid and the licence was therefore suspended in accordance with legislation.

Licensing Officers visited the store at a later date and saw that a large stock of various brands of alcoholic drinks were on display for sale. There was a wide selection of wines and beers on shelves, in chillers, or stacked in the aisles, along with a wide selection of spirits on shelves behind the check-out.

A test purchase was carried out and a member of staff sold a bottle of wine to the officers. The proprietor was contacted after the sale and it was established that several items of unopened mail were at the premises, including the notice of suspension.

Joss Thomas, Specialist Officer, Licensing, said, “There’s no excuse for selling alcohol without the proper licence. This fine sends a clear message to everyone who does so that it’s an offence, punishable by law, not to renew their licence in the proper time period. We continue to keep a watchful eye on licensing to ensure alcohol is sold only by those who behave in a professional manner and we will not hesitate to take action against those that don’t.”

“Failing to obtain the necessary licence to sell alcohol fundamentally undermines the controls that exist to tackle the harm that can be caused by alcohol consumption.

“Excessive consumption is a major cause of serious health problems and anti-social behaviour issues in our community. The licensing regime exists to ensure that alcohol is sold only by people who have been deemed safe and suitable and in circumstances that ensure the health and wellbeing of the community is safeguarded. Our commitment is to ensure alcohol is sold only by those who take their responsibilities seriously.”

  • We continue to stand with Ukraine on this first anniversary of the invasion

We continue to stand with Ukraine on this first anniversary of the invasion

One year ago today the world was shocked when Ukraine was invaded by Russian forces following weeks of speculation.

Many Ukranians have died and many more displaced or have fled as refugees across Europe. Those that stayed now bravely continue to fight for their country.

Here in Wrexham we are privileged to now be sanctuary to many of those refugees and we continue to seek accommodation for more to find refuge here.

More Hosts needed for Ukrainian Refugees

We’ve also been actively engaged with welcoming many Ukrainians and their hosts with regular drop in sessions and multi agency awareness raising events, signposting guests to employment and education opportunities.

“Our support for Ukraine is unwavering”

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council, said, “Our support for Ukraine is unwavering. It’s been a very difficult year for many but to see Ukrainians being welcomed here has been very heartwarming.

“We will continue to offer all the help, advice and support we can to anyone seeking refuge here.”

Cllr Paul Roberts, Lead Member for Partnerships and Community Safety, said, “People in Wrexham have once again opened their arms and homes to those who have fled their home country, often leaving loved ones behind to fight.

“Their country’s fight continues and I very much hope the next anniversary will see peace having been restored and rebuilding started.”

  • Inspire Youth Work in Hospital recognised at Wales Excellence Awards

Inspire Youth Work in Hospital recognised at Wales Excellence Awards

The Inspire Youth Work in Hospital project has been awarded the prestigious Demonstrating Excellence in Partnership Planning and Delivery at a regional/national level at the recent Youth Work in Wales Excellence Awards.

The awards recognises and celebrates outstanding youth work projects, youth workers and those involved in youth work across Wales.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

Inspire supports young people within Wrexham Maelor Hospital and also in the community. It’s a multi-disciplinary team of youth workers and assistant psychologists working holistically alongside each young person to help them achieve their goals.

They support young people aged 11-18 who live in Wrexham or Flintshire who engage in self-harming behaviour or experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide. The team provides one to one support to young people referred into the project, do daily ward visits to young people admitted to children’s ward for any reason, deliver informal education sessions to schools and youth groups around emotional health and wellbeing and also run groups and a closed youth club for young people who have accessed support from inspire.

Inspire is a partnership project between Wrexham’s Youth Service, Flintshire County Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Its aim is to empower and promote the independence and confidence of each young person while increasing positive coping strategies and resilience. It looks to address the reasons why a young person is engaging in self-harm rather than just dealing with the behaviour itself.

Their one to one work consists of voluntary engagement of around 8 individual sessions at venues of the young person’s choice, focusing on what each young person would like to achieve and what they feel would help them at that time.

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, said, “My congratulations go to the team for receiving this award and the national recognition of excellence that goes with it. The service they offer is invaluable to young people and I know their commitment to helping young people achieve their goals and ambitions is highly valued by users and professionals alike.”

The awards took place at Brangwyn Hall, Swansea.
