It’s that time of year again!!

Every year we send out voter registration details to you in the post.

It’s to make sure the details for each address are correct and that you will be registered to vote when the next election takes place.

It’s important that you are registered to vote – it means you will have a voice if an election is called.

If you’re not registered your name will not be on the form – if you want to register the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

If you’ve moved homes recently you are asked to keep a special eye out for the form and check the details. Recent research shows that home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time.

Across Great Britain, 94% of people who have been at their property for more than 16 years will be registered compared to 40% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year.

Rhydian Thomas, Head of the Electoral Commission in Wales, said: “it’s really important that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to do so. Checking the form that will arrive through the post is one of the easiest ways to find out if you are already registered. there’s lots of helpful information about registering to vote on our website that you can check out here

Bee Aware! Grass and Wildflowers for Tŷ Mawr Car Park

There’s some good news for bees as Tŷ Mawr has announced it’s improving its overspill car park with environmentally friendly paving that allows water to drain freely and grass and wildflowers to grow through. The area will also be landscaped with wildflower “bee and buterfly banks”.

The park has already achieved national “bee friendly status” and school children have been taking a look to see what bees and butterflies live there already.

The works are taking place following the news that a grant has been awarded by the Green Infrastructure Capital Grant Scheme and contributions made by Cefn Community Council and the Friends of Tŷ Mawr.

The works will begin in the next few days last for about 6 week. There will be some inconvenience during this time but it will be worth it when the works are finished.

You can also get involved in this project by going to a “bee happy” event on August 2 where you can learn more about bees as you follow a trail around the park. There’s also a chance to make your own bug hotel on August 16.

You can find out more by emailing the countryparks@wrexham.gov.uk

  • Support for carers – what you might need to know

Support for carers – what you might need to know

We’ve said it before – carers do a lot of hard work, much of which goes unrecognised.

And we want to do what we can to support them.

You might have heard about some upcoming changes to the support service we provide for carers in Wrexham.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

We’re starting a new carers’ Information, advice, support and respite service.

We’ve switched from former providers, Wrexham Carers Service, Hafal and Crossroads, to NEWCIS (North East Wales Carers Information Service).

There won’t be any big changes – and carers can still expect the same high standard of service that they received from Wrexham Carers Service, Hafal and Crossroads.

And all registered carers have been written to by their current provider to let them know what’s happening – we don’t want anyone to be left in the dark.

    Who are NEWCIS?

NEWCIS provided the carers information service in Wrexham until 2011

They have a strong track record of providing support for carers with our neighbours in Flintshire and Denbighshire – and we look forward to working with them again.

I’m a carer – what do I need to do?

If you’re registered with Wrexham Carers Service, Hafal and/or Crossroads, NEWCIS will make contact with you over the next few months – if you’re okay with sharing your details with them.

If you receive carers respite from Crossroads, NEWCIS will discuss your respite break options and support needs, and will work with you to ensure that your assessed needs continue to be met under the new service.

If you have been receiving a service from Wrexham Carers Service and/or Hafal and you agree to share your details with NEWCIS, they will ensure that you receive their newsletter which will give you further details of what you might need to know.

If you’ve not yet signed up as a carer, visit www.newcis.org.uk.

“Confident standard of service will stay high”

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care for Wrexham Council, said: “I’m confident that the standard of service sustained under former providers will continue under the new arrangements with NEWCIS.

“The hard work carried out by carers is very important, so we want to be absolutely sure that they’re getting the support they need.”

  • Acton Park lake closed to fishing

Acton Park lake closed to fishing

A number of dead fish have been found at Acton Park Lake recently which could be due to a number of reasons. It could be that oxygen levels are low due to the warm weather or it could be due to a fish virus known as KHV. It is not harmful to humans.

The Fish Health Inspectorate is carrying out tests to establish whether or not the virus is present. The tests will take up to four weeks to confirm, or otherwise, the presence of the disease.

Notices have been put up and bailiffs will help enforce the temporary closure. We’ll let you know when it’s open to fishing again.

  • 5 things we love about the Monday Market

5 things we love about the Monday Market

Monday mornings just wouldn’t be the same without our Monday Market.

The buzz, the banter (or bantz!), the genuine street-market atmosphere. It’s great.

The market takes place on Queens Square every (you guessed it) Monday. And just in case you’ve forgotten how good it is, here’s a list of things we love about the whole affair.

    1. The fresh produce

Market traders generally don’t have access to the kind of technology that supermarkets can use to preserve food before it hits the shelves.

That’s a good thing. It means the produce you buy from a market trader is virtually guaranteed to be fresh.

    2. The friendliness and community spirit

Markets are always really sociable places, full of chatter and fun.

Wrexham’s Monday Market is a diverse community of people that gather on a weekly basis, so it’s a great place to meet people.

Whether it be the customers or the stall owners, you’re bound to bump into someone interesting.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

    3. The bargains

Need a new wallet? After some CDs for your car? Need some plants for the garden or some pork chops for tea?

Why pay store prices when you can often get the same thing for a better price at the market?

    4. A cure for the Monday blues

Let’s be honest. Nobody likes Mondays.

So cheer yourself up by treating yourself to a quirky something from the market.

    5. It’s expanding

That’s right! The Monday Market is getting bigger and better – so there’s always something new to see.

Maybe you’d like to run a market stall and want to be part of this expansion?

Get in touch by email or call us on 01978 297050.

  • High Street Ruabon to close for Gas Main Repairs

High Street Ruabon to close for Gas Main Repairs

If you’re travelling along High Street in Ruabon over the coming weeks you may be delayed and have to take a different route due to gas main repair works taking place by Wales and West Utilities.

The works will start on August 13.

The works cross the junctions of both park Street and Church Street and will take 3 weeks to complete.

This work will mean High Street will be closed from its junction with Park Street through to its junction with Maelor Place. Traffic will be able to turn right in to Park Street as they approach the junction from Ruabon Station, but all other manoeuvres at Park Street and Church Street will not be allowed.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

Access will be maintained to all properties during the closure, which will be in place for 3-weeks, however this may be via those signed diversions utilising the A483, New Hall Lane, Tatham Road and B5605 Ruabon Road.

Diversions will be in place for the duration of the works.

Bus operators who run services through Ruabon have been informed of these works and will endeavour to minimise the impact to their services, but unfortunately some disruption will be experienced.

Ideas Tree for views on Alyn Waters cafe

Do you use Alyn Waters Cafe? If so we’d like you to take the time to make your views known about the future of the cafe by leaving your thoughts and ideas on the Ideas Tree that’s been put in place for you to use.

The cafe is owned by our Environment Department and Adult Social Care have, for a number of years, run it by providing work opportunities to their clients.

As part of the budget process earlier it was agreed to review this arrangement and commercial and charitable organisations were asked to let us know if they would be interested in taking on the running of the cafe. You can read more about this in the article below.

    Could you run this cafe?

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

We received a good level of response which shows there are a range of businesses and organisations who would be interested in taking the Cafe forward, contributing to the well-being of Wrexham and creating new partnerships and opportunities on the site.

The tree will be available for you to use for the next three weeks.

    You can take part here

Pictured above with the Ideas Tree behind them are Tony, Richard, Ken and Cynan who, along with their friend John (currently away) have been going to the cafe every day for 8 years. they would like to see things stay as they are as they think the cafe is a great place and their message was not to change things.

Providing opportunities for people with disabilities was something they all felt was important and made the cafe the friendly and inclusive place that keeps them coming back.

They are now encouraging everyone who uses the cafe to make their views known by using the Ideas Tree.

  • Reducing our carbon footprint – how are we doing?

Reducing our carbon footprint – how are we doing?

Carbon footprint? One of those “buzz” phrases that we’re all using to sound cool or something we’re really working hard on? Reducing our carbon footprint means that we are doing our bit to improve life in Wrexham.

Here in Wrexham we have a programme that’s really beginning to see results and here’s just some of the things we’ve been up to.

    “Installing vehicle charging points”

Last March we reported that we’d be installing electric charging points costing £150,000 in some of our car parks. Well since then our officers have been busy sorting through tenders and we’ll be bringing you some news very shortly of when they’ll be installed and how soon you can start using them.

There’ll be five sites – Waterworld, Tŷ Pawb, Tŷ Mawr Country Park, Alyn Waters Country Park and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – and we see them as Phase 1 of preparing for the expected increase in the use of electric cars in the coming years.

SPOTTED FLY TIPPING? REPORT IT QUICKLY AND EASILY HERE.

You can read more here about charging points below:

Get set to be all charged Up

    “Schools improvements”

Some of our schools have also seen energy improvements by upgrading to better Building Management Systems – these will not only see a reduction in energy use but will mean that financial savings as a result will pay for the improvements in a few years time. How cool is that!

We’re also and installing and improving connections to boilers in other schools in the county borough and improving lighting systems.

    “LED lighting”

£70,000 has been spent on installing LED street lights in the town centre and we’re now identifying other areas to benefit from this type of energy efficient lighting.

In total we’re spending over £400,000 on reducing our carbon footprint and in many cases such as the BMS upgrades in schools there will be payback in a few years.

“How have we paid for these improvements?”

The various schemes have been paid for by the income generated from our solar farm in Legacy – this opened in 2017 and it saves 1,300 tonnes of CO2 per year and generates 2,355 MWh of electricity annually – that’s enough to power 700 homes!

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “As a local council we have a duty to take the lead when looking at energy efficiency. Finding the funds  is a challenge to us and most other local authorities but the opening of the solar farm in Legacy has proved invaluable to us to continue the improvement works across the county borough.”
