    Library News: Reading for Fun

A love for reading can be hugely valuable for children. The benefits of leisure reading include increased general knowledge, a positive impact on academic achievement, enhanced reading ability and vocabulary growth.

Research suggests that time spent reading for pleasure could be a key indicator for the future success of a child. Reading aloud too fosters a love of books in children, and helps children associate reading with pleasure.

  • Congratulations to Bradford on becoming UK City of Culture 2025

Congratulations to Bradford on becoming UK City of Culture 2025

This evening it was announced live on BBC’s The One Show that the winner of the UK City of Culture 2025 title is Bradford

We would like firstly to congratulate Bradford in winning the title as we know how much hard work is involved and we’re sure that Bradford will make a great success of their year as UK City of Culture. We look forward to visiting in 2025.

As a county, and as a community, this competition has brought us all closer together and helped us realise just how special Wrexham is. We all have different backgrounds and different stories, but once we start joining the dots, we’re a strong, supportive and resilient community who look out and support each other.

The work and achievements of the past few months has put us on a new trajectory that we aim to build upon over the coming years, creating an even more thriving community and generating opportunities in the process.

    • Work that will now take place includes

-Committing to a significant event programme in 2023 and 2025

    – Publicising an update on what this will look like by July 2022

    –              Use the momentum generated as part of the bit to take the county forward

    –              Further develop the important role that play has in Wrexham.

Joanna Swash, CEO of Moneypenny and chair of Wrecsam City of Culture steering group said: “We’ve achieved so much in this short amount of time and have witnessed an outpouring of community and business support for the bid. “We’ve shown just how much drive and potential that Wrexham has to offer and we have a strong platform to build on this further in terms of culture, skills and innovation in our county.”

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham County Borough Council said: “ It has been a great to see our many achievements, community engagement and support for the bid, but for now, we will no longer proceed in the competition and wish Bradford the best of luck in their year as UK City of Culture in 2025 . “We have now achieved city status for Wrexham and we look forward to realising the benefits that this will bring.”

Chair of Wrexham County Borough Council City of Culture steering group Cllr Hugh Jones said: “As the only region on the shortlist from Wales, we flew the flag for our country as well as Wrexham. Achieving shortlist status has helped us raise the profile of Wrexham, but it’s also sparked momentum and given us a platform to build on for future.”

Ian Bancroft, Chief Executive of Wrexham County Borough Council, said: “We have a much better understanding of what Wrexham culture is, and what culture means to Wrexham. “Culture plays a part in people’s daily lives and has a capacity to change and improve our surroundings and wellbeing. “We need to ensure that the links made during this competition as well as the learnings from it are not lost, and head towards a future where culture plays a key role in our planning and decision making for the  benefit of our county.”

    What happens next?

Although we have missed out on becoming UK City of Culture hosts in 2025, there’s still so much to look forward to.

    • We intend on having our own ‘year of culture’ in 2023 and 2005 and will publicise what this looks like by July 2022

Wales and the Battle of Britain Touring Exhibition is coming to Wrexham

We’re pleased to announce that Tŷ Pawb will be hosting the “Wales and the Battle of Britain” Touring Exhibition which celebrates the 80 year anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The Battle of Britain took place over the skies of the UK between 10 July and 31 October 1940 and involved 2,947 Aircrew including Pilots, Observers, Air Gunners and Wireless Operators. 544 were killed in action and aircrafts involved included the iconic Spitfire, Hurricane, Blenheim, Beaufighter, Defiant and Gladiator.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

Visitors to the exhibition will learn about the importance of Welsh bases such as RAF Hawarden which trained Spitfire Pilots. It also tells of the 68 Welsh aircrew that fought and the 17 Welsh pilots who were killed in action during the battle and of the price paid by Welsh cities like Swansea who suffered terrible losses during the German bombing raids.

Air Commodore Adrian Williams, Air Officer Wales, who will be opening the exhibition said, “I’m delighted that, following on from the official opening of the Wales and the Battle of Britain 80th Anniversary Exhibition in Cardiff, the exhibition is now touring Wales and will be visiting the City of Wrexham from 13 – 18 June.

“The Battle of Britain, the largest air battle ever recorded, was one of the most pivotal and iconic moments in the history of this country. It marked a turning point of the Second World War when Britain stood alone against Hitler’s seemingly unstoppable military power.

“The exhibition tells a story that will enable Welsh people to come along and find out more about what happened in the skies and on the ground in the Summer of 1940. It details the Welsh aircrew who fought, including a number from Wrexham, telling their stories and heroism to a modern Welsh audience.”

The Wales and the Battle of Britain Exhibition was created by the RAF’s Air Historical Branch (Dr Lynsey Shaw), together with Air Commodore Adrian Williams, to commemorate Wales’ contribution to victory in the Battle of Britain.

It was originally planned to be launched in 2020 but, had to be postponed due to the pandemic. The Wales and the Battle of Britain Exhibition is a story told from a Welsh perspective, one that has never been told before.

It opens at 3pm on 13 June and will be open during normal Tŷ Pawb until the 18 June.

Garden waste collections – know what you’re signing up for

We would like to advise any residents not signed up for garden waste collections who are now thinking of joining that they need to wait until sales open up for the next collection year if they want to get a full 12 months service.

Recently, we’ve had some residents join our current 2021/22 service thinking they would get 12 months’ worth of collections from the date they signed up, but this isn’t how it works.

Residents who don’t already receive the collections can still join the current 2021/22 service, but need to be aware it runs until September 2, 2022, so should you join the service now you’ll only be getting around 3 months of collections.

Get news and info from your local council – sign-up for email bulletins.

2022/23 sales expected to open in the summer

The next full 12 months service isn’t currently available. We expect renewals for the September 2022-August 2023 service to open in the summer.
Please don’t attempt to renew before we provide you with these details.

Service charge frozen until September 2023

The cost of the garden waste collection service has been frozen at £25 per green bin per year for the next service year (September 2022-August 2023).

Darren Williams, Chief Officer Environment and Technical, said: “We’re pleased to be able to freeze the cost of the service until September 2023. The £25 per green bin per year charge will keep the cost of the Wrexham service one of the lowest in England and Wales.”
