Discover Wrexham’s industrial past on this free tour…

Did you know you can get a free guided tour of one of Wrexham’s most famous historic sites?

Bersham Ironworks may now be a peaceful spot in the beautiful Clywedog Valley but it was once a busy industrial site producing iron products which were shipped all over the country.

This included steam engine cylinders and even canons!

The Ironworks were made famous by John ‘Iron Mad’ Wilkinson, a leading figure in the Industrial Revolution.

In the 1700’s, john developed a new method of boring canons which made them more accurate and less likely to accidentally explode.

This brilliant innovation made Bersham one of the most important iron manufacturing centres in the world.

The daytime entertainment was followed by an evening concert featuring some top bands and performers including Baby Brave, Meilir, Omaloma, Double-Barelled and Break the Record.

Lead Member for People – Communities, Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, Cllr Hugh Jones, said: “Dydd Llun 2 has capped off a wonderful first year for Tŷ Pawb. To have attracted such a large audience on a sunny Easter weekend when many people would usually have been heading outdoors is hugely impressive and shows just how popular Tŷ Pawb has become as a family friendly destination.

“The combination of arts, markets, food & drink, family friendly activities and diverse live entertainment has proved a huge hit with visitors and thanks must go to the huge efforts of the staff, traders, volunteers, artists and all those who have worked so hard to make Tŷ Pawb such a success story.

“We are looking forward to more exciting times in Tŷ Pawb’s second year, with some fantastic events and exhibitions planned, including the Football exhibition ‘Futbolka’ which launches on Friday.”

  • “Wrexham, Look Up!!”

    “Wrexham, Look Up!!”

There’s a brand new arts installation in Central Arcade thanks to local Building Art Project Volunteer, Wayne Price.

The “Wrexham, Look Up!!” installation is made up of over 200 brightly coloured paper globes above the shops in the Arcade. They’ve gradually gone up over the last few days and now the final touches have been made to complete the work. And they look fantastic 🙂

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

They’ve already caused a bit of a media storm with comments such as “beautiful”, “amazing”, “lovely”, “pretty”, “cool” and “brilliant” appearing on various posts.

    “Chance meeting”

The idea came about during a chance meeting in a café between Central Arcade shop owner of Abode Above, Daphne Roberts and Wrexham Building Art Project Volunteer Lead, Wayne Price.

They decided to work together to brighten up the shopping area with the aim of reminding people that Central Arcade is a charming place to visit, this resulted in the “Wrexham, Look Up!!” globes.

“Gem in the heart of Wrexham”

Daphne said, “The feedback so far has been overwhelming, everyone loves it. We need people to know that Central Arcade is a gem in the heart of Wrexham, as well as home to a number of small, independent businesses. So please look up, look around, support your local independents and tell everyone that ‘Central Arcade is so much more than a thoroughfare”

Wayne Price said, “As always there is a lot of people to thank for putting together a project of this size. Thanks first of all to Daphne, Steven, Angie of RedCrafts and all the traders of Central Arcade for their help, vision and desire to get this project done thank you to the landlords of Central Arcade for their permission, Thank you to the volunteers on the day, Daphne, Christian, Angie and Sharon Rogers.”

This isn’t the first time Wayne has been at work in the town centre. In November he was behind a remembrance mural on Bank Street – the first of his projects and more recently he’s revisited Bank Street to spruce up a few more buildings.

You can read about the 100 year remembrance mural in the article below.

    Where did that come from?

The Mayor, Cllr Andy Williams, visited the installation as it was close to completion. He said: “Wayne is to be congratulated for his initiatives which are creatively improving the appearance of some of our older buildings. They’re all very appropriate for the buildings themselves and I know visitors to the town centre are very appreciative of his originality and hard work in completing the projects to date.”

  • Football Focus as Sports Council awards £100,000 for improvements

Football Focus as Sports Council awards £100,000 for improvements

Football remains in the headlines at the moment as we receive news that we have been awarded a grant of £100,000 to help support the improvement of football facilities at Ponciau Banks in Rhos and Solvay Banks in Brynteg.

The money will support improvement to the sports pavilion at Solvay Banks and match grant monies already obtained to help build a replacement community sports pavilion at Ponciau Banks. These two areas are part of a pilot hub project to support grass roots football in Wrexham.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

This follows a grant of £50,000 from the Welsh Government to fund the development work on the football hub pilot areas with the Football Association Wales (Trust) and North East Wales Football Association to help clubs develop their boys and girls teams, encourage stronger links between junior and senior teams and encourage a wider section of the community to keep fit through playing football.

One of the hubs covers football clubs from Brynteg, Brymbo to New Broughton and includes Ysgol Clywedog, as the feeder school. The other hub covers Johnstown, Rhos, Rhostyllen and Pen y cae and includes Ysgol Ruabon and Ysgol Grango, as the feeder schools.

Grant aid from the Welsh Government has enabled the Football Association Wales (Trust) to work with the clubs and schools on developing plans to improve football opportunities in these areas. This work is due to be completed in the next few weeks.

    “Excellent News”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “This is excellent news and we are grateful to the Sports Council for recognising the work we are doing here in Wrexham with football and the community.”

We, along with key partners including Wrexham AFC, Glyndŵr University and the Football Association of Wales (FAW), have aspirational plans to significantly develop the profile of football in Wrexham and this funding is part of those plans as the plans move forward.

Deputy Minister for Culture Sport and Tourism Lord Elis-Thomas said: “Whether it’s the hall you do classes in or the pitch you play on, having the right facilities in place has a big impact on a person’s experience – and likelihood of them participating on a regular basis.

“There is a clear need to increase the spread of top-class facilities across the country and we are acting on that with investment, but we must also make sure these benefit local communities, as well as elite athletes.”

The gaming zone was packed on both days as old and young took turns in trying out the latest games and gadgetry on the market.

The Question and Answer sessions, always popular, were packed to hear from the stars of Sabrina, Gotham, Stargate, Lord of the Rings, Umbrella Academy, Hunger Games and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Finally on Sunday came the Cosplay Masquerade when all the hard work of getting dressed for Comic Con paid off.

We’d like to thank the organisers for yet another great event, held here in Wrexham, which brings more than £1m annually into the regional economy.
