    Safer in Seconds

    Have you ever wondered how you would know if something you bought had been recalled for safety reasons? Look no further!

    Now there is a website you can use that means you will never miss what could be an important safety message.

    COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

    Register my Appliance is a website where you add the details of your appliance, new or old, so the manufacturer is able to contact you if they need to give you a safety message or recall a product.

    Once you have bought a product it can be very hard for manufacturers to trace you if you don’t provide contact details when you buy. Using this website means that you have one place where you can register all your appliances and make sure you don’t miss out on a safety notice or, in rare instances, a product recall.

    So, click on this link to register your appliance and you will be safer in seconds!

  • Welsh football Museum Could Come to Wrexham Museum

    Welsh football Museum Could Come to Wrexham Museum

    Wrexham Council has welcomed an announcement by the Welsh Government that Wrexham Museum is the preferred option to house the Welsh Football Museum.

    The news was announced by Dafydd Elis Thomas AM, the Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism.

    Plans for a National Football Museum were mooted by the Welsh Government in the summer of last year, with the aim of working with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) to showcase Wales’ football history at an appropriate location.

    COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

    Wrexham is the spiritual home of football in Wales and has strong historical links with the FAW, which was founded at a meeting at the Wynnstay Arms on Yorke Street in 1876.

    The proposals for the Museum are among a number of football-led projects taking place in Wrexham, including;

    • The improvement of the Mold Road gateway leading into town, including the train station and the Racecourse;
    • A new football development centre at Colliers Park;
    • Working with FAW to develop new community footballing hubs;
    • Work by the Council and Wrexham AFC to secure a permanent location for a training ground

    Wrexham Museum has had an interest in football for some time, acquiring the Welsh Football Collection in 2000 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and has had aspirations to house a permanent display about the game ever since.

    The hope is that the museum building will house both the Welsh Football Museum and a new and enlarged Wrexham Museum, utilising available space on the first floor of the building.

    Museum has international potential

    Steve Grenter, Heritage & Archives Lead at Wrexham Council, said: “We certainly welcome this news, and we’re very pleased that the Welsh Government has seen the potential of Wrexham Museum as the home of the Welsh Football Museum.

    “Welsh football has gained no small amount of prominence in recent years thanks to the performance of the national team, so this has the potential to be not just a national attraction, but an international one.

    “Wrexham has longstanding links with FAW”

    Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “We are absolutely delighted to hear this news. Wrexham has a very proud, longstanding link with the FAW and it’s fantastic to know that legacy now has the potential to continue into the future with the Welsh Football Museum hopefully coming to Wrexham.

    “The development of the Welsh Football Museum would also allow for the continued development of Wrexham Museum – it has always been the aim of the Museum to have some continued form of historical display on Welsh football, due to the strong role it has played in the history of Wrexham, and we would continue to display both in the best possible setting.

    “Officers and representatives from Wrexham Council have been in discussions with Welsh Government and their consultants for quite some time, and have put in a lot of work to ensure this could all take place, and I wish to express my gratitude, and that of my Executive Board colleagues, to them.”

  • Think putting one plastic bottle in your black bin won’t matter? You’ll be surprised…

    Think putting one plastic bottle in your black bin won’t matter? You’ll be surprised…

    Over the last few months, we’ve told you how we’re continuing to get better at recycling in Wrexham.

    And while some of our recent figures have been encouraging, it’s definitely worth asking yourself, could I perhaps do a little bit more?

    The images in this article are from a random black bin collection-round in Wrexham and they show examples of the waste we collected.

    In these images, you can see plastic bottles, glass bottles, glass jars, aluminium cans and cardboard boxes, all of which could’ve been recycled at the kerbside.

    You’ll also see things like a kettle and a selection of clothes which could’ve been taken to any of our recycling centres (clothing and shoes can be recycled in clear plastic bags at the kerbside too, but larger items such as bedding and curtains need to be taken to our recycling centres).

    Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport says: “While we’re getting better at recycling in Wrexham and there are so many households trying to do their bit, these pictures show there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

    “It’s worrying to see the amounts of bottles, cans and jars that could be recycled still finding their way into people’s black bins.

    “Every bit of recycling – no matter how small it seems – can add up over time and help make a difference. So before you throw something in the black bin, please ask yourself…‘can I recycle this?’”

    WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

    25,610 tonnes

    You may think the plastic bottles, cans, glass jars etc. that you’re putting in your black bin waste won’t make much difference in the grand scheme of things…

    But we collected a whopping 25,610 tonnes of black bin waste for the period 2018/19 and a decent amount of this was stuff that could’ve been recycled at the kerbside.

    Recyclable plastics, papers, cardboards and glass made up a large part of this figure and this is something we’ll need to try and address in Wrexham going forwards.

    Mrs Jones…and Mr Smith…

    If you fill your black bin with stuff that can be recycled, you’re probably not leaving yourself with enough room for your unrecyclable waste, plus it’s a good thing to have space in your black bin 🙂

    There could be many reasons why some of these items find their way into your black bin waste…perhaps you didn’t fancy taking an item outside to your recycling box as it was quite late at night.

    But frankly, every time you put something in your black bin that could be recycled, you aren’t the only one across Wrexham doing this…these pictures are from just one round and they show the extent of recyclables that are still finding their way into black bins.

    The bottles, cans and jars you didn’t recycle are added to the ones Mrs Jones next door didn’t recycle, which are added to ones Mr Smith two-doors down didn’t recycle…you get the picture 😉

    So next time you think that your one plastic bottle won’t make a difference, try to see the bigger picture…if we all take responsibility for our own recycling, then Wrexham can claim it’s doing its bit for the environment 🙂

    Let us know what you think about town centre heritage

    You might have seen some of our recent work, carried out under the Townscape Heritage Scheme, which seeks to renovate some of our important, historic buildings within Wrexham town centre, repairing or reinstating their traditional features and celebrating their special character.

    We hope to upgrade a number of buildings within Wrexham Town Centre Conservation Area – bringing them back into use, whilst preserving and improving those things which make them architecturally unique.

    We received a £65k grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in the summer of 2018 to develop the scheme – and are now preparing a second-round bid, which could secure £1.52million to support the physical works.

    COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIFE OF A CHILD IN CARE?

    We welcome your views on how the project might work – both from members of the public who visit and use the town centre on a regular basis, and also those who own buildings within the designated area.

    With this in mind, we’ll be holding a consultation event at Tŷ Pawb, from 3pm on Thursday, May 9.

    Your views will help guide us on what people want from the project, as well as how this work can complement other potential projects within the town centre.

    So if you want to give us your views, make sure to be at Tŷ Pawb at 3pm on Thursday, May 9.

    “Being a foster carer is by no means easy, but with the contribution of just some time and effort, you can make an immeasurable difference to the life of a child in care.”

    Councillor’s charity drive across Europe backed by local company

    One of our councillors will be tackling 2,000 miles across Europe in a fundraising bid for a “vital” Welsh charity.

    And his fuel costs will be covered by a local cooking oil firm.

    Cllr Paul Pemberton will be tackling a 2,000 mile route from Rhosllanerchrugog to Benidorm in Spain, competing against more than 40 other vehicles along the way.

    ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

    His route will see him take in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, before curving back towards Spain along the Côte d’Azur and towards Benidorm via Barcelona and Valencia.

    And he’ll be doing the whole thing in a 2004 Ford Mondeo.

    His charity challenge will take place in support of Wales Air Ambulance – one of the charities which has been backed by Mayor Cllr Andy Williams during his time as Mayor.

    Cllr Pemberton’s fundraiser has already received more than £2,000 in donations from individuals, groups and companies in Wrexham.

    One of the companies which has backed his efforts is Fry Fresh Edible Oils Ltd, based on the Vauxhall Industrial Estate.

    The firm offered to cover Cllr Pemberton’s fuel costs for the long journey to Benidorm.

    Cllr Pemberton said: “I’m incredibly grateful to Fry Fresh for their offer – with something like this when we’re looking to cross a continent, fuel is obviously one of our biggest costs, so to have a sponsor like them covering our fuel costs is a very generous commitment on their part, and it means we can put even more money towards Wales Air Ambulance.”

    Cllr Williams said: “I was very pleased to visit Fry Fresh with Cllr Pemberton, and thank them for their generous donation towards his efforts.

    “I chose Wales Air Ambulance as one of the charities to support during my time as Mayor as they provide a vital service alongside our emergency services, and the importance of the work they do cannot be overstated.

    “As such, I’m pleased with the support shown to Cllr Pemberton’s fundraising drive, and would like to thank all those who’ve donated thus far.”
