    The perfect match

Llangollen International Eisteddfod has been delighting music lovers for over 70 years.

Every July thousands of people flock to the beautiful Welsh town on the River Dee to see acts from all over the world performing at the iconic Eisteddfod Pavillion.

Famous names who have appeared at the festival in years gone by have included Bryn Terfel, Katherine Jenkins, Nigel Kennedy, Elaine Paige, Michael Ball and Pavarotti.

Wrexham’s very own Tŷ Pawb is already making its mark on the national culture scene, despite only being open a year.

As well as showing exhibitions featuring Tuner Prize winning artists such as Grayson Perry and Damien Hirst, Tŷ Pawb has also been the venue for all sorts of popular music events, including the weekly lunchtime concert series which regularly attracts large audiences and features local performers such as BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist, Elias Ackerley.

Its also one of the main venues for the internationally acclaimed Focus Wales festival.

    Special performances planned

Tŷ Pawb’s Creative Director, Jo Marsh, said: “We are very excited to be working with such a prestigious and highly regarded festival.

“Llangollen International Eisteddfod is one of the biggest events on North Wales’ cultural calendar.

“The partnership will mean that selected acts performing at the Eisteddfod will be able to come here to Tŷ Pawb for our local audiences to enjoy.

“We’ll also be sending acts from Wrexham to perform in Llangollen during Eisteddfod week.

“We have plans for some other collaborative events to take place throughout 2019 which we’ll be announcing very soon.

“The partnership gives us a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the flourishing arts and culture scene we have in this region of North Wales and encourage new audiences to come and get involved.”

Llangollen Eisteddfod’s Music Director, Edward-Rhys Harry, said: “Llangollen Eisteddfod has its roots in the local community and we are delighted to be working with Tŷ Pawb to be bringing the message of the Eisteddfod into the heart of Wrexham, and in return providing opportunities for local artists to perform at the Eisteddfod and showcase their talents alongside the rest of the world”

“Fantastic news for our local arts scene”

Cllr Hugh Jones said: “Llangollen International Eisteddfod and Tŷ Pawb both play key roles in celebrating Welsh culture and attracting visitors to North Wales so this partnership is very exciting news for our local arts and music scene.

“I wish both teams every success and hope as many people as possible will go out and enjoy the performances that are being planned as part of this collaboration.”

  • It’s not just the children who’ve been inspired by recycling at this Wrexham school

It’s not just the children who’ve been inspired by recycling at this Wrexham school

A short while ago, we told you about how a group of pupils at Victoria CP school had been inspired to present an assembly to the rest of their school, talking about the benefits of recycling.

This was following on from their visit to the Education Room at Bryn Lane Recycling Centre, where they learnt about the different types of bins, what can be recycled, what happens to our recycling, and why it’s important not to contaminate recycling – amongst other things.

Also in attendance was Graham Evans, Maintenance Manager at Victoria CP school – although he insists he prefers ‘caretaker’ – and he was really impressed with the session which has improved his recycling knowledge even further.

WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport says: “It’s great that people are getting to see the Education Room and learn more about recycling. It’s proving very popular with schools, plus our Streetscene workers have been over recently to learn more. Knowledge is key, and it’s this greater understanding that can help us to reach our 70% recycling target by 2025.”

Now, here’s what Graham had to say about his visit 🙂

“It really puts everything into perspective”

Graham explains: “I found the visit to the Education Room really useful. I think other caretakers would find it beneficial too – it really puts everything into perspective.

“You actually get to see where everything goes and you get to understand the recycling process. It lets you see the things you don’t get to see, if that makes sense.”

Catherine Golightly, Waste Strategy Officer for Wrexham Council runs the sessions that give the pupils an interactive recycling experience.

A viewing window allows pupils to see how recyclable materials are bulked-up, ready to be taken away and recycled into new products.

And Catherine was delighted that the children used their initiative to feed all this back to the rest of their school.

Catherine told us: “It makes the workshops worthwhile, when you can see that the information is really being taken on board. The fact they want to educate their whole school is wonderful.

“The pupils should be very proud of what they presented.”

Here’s our short video from Victoria CP’s assembly on recycling…

“Everyone thinks it goes straight to landfill…”

One of the things Graham also wants to highlight following his visit, is why it’s important not to put recyclable material in your black bin waste.

Graham says: “Something that stood out was the black bin waste. Everyone thinks it goes straight to landfill, but it doesn’t. It goes to Wrexham Industrial Estate where they try to take out as much metal and plastics as they can.

“Even some of the recycling has to be picked through to remove materials that have got contaminated by other waste.

“I’d like to think that if more people got to see what I’ve seen, they would understand recycling better and in-turn recycle more.”

Don’t miss out on vital funding for groups across Wrexham!

Do you want to set up a new group for adults in your local community?

Could you host a luncheon club?

Is a group you attend looking to expand?

Well, the Community Inclusion Grant could help you!

Our Adult Social Care Team helps to fund lots of different projects and groups for adults across Wrexham.  From luncheon clubs, Yoga and art classes to bird watching and line dancing.

The grant aims to support the start-up of community based activities or expand groups and lunch, supper and breakfast clubs which support the independence, health and wellbeing of individuals living within their community.

Applications can be submitted throughout the year for consideration at quarterly Grant Panels.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

Following on from the success of the Community Inclusion Grant since 2012, we are now widening the eligibility criteria. This means that we will welcome applications from schemes that support older adults and adults with learning and/or physical disabilities and mental health problems, as well as informal carers.

Since 2012 the Grant has helped nearly one hundred groups in the County Borough.

Mr Phil Coops, said, “Funding from the Community Inclusion Grant has made it possible for our small group to obtain and make available equipment and material for the use of the whole community in a manner that has not been available before. We can now help the senior members of the district remember their previous years and recollect the past that they will enjoy.

“The process for obtaining the grant is quite simple to navigate and the staff were always available to help should there be any problems. As a group, they have been invaluable in helping us to carry out our successful application and project for the community.”

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: “Having now extended the grant criteria these grants are open to a much wider variety of community groups.

“This is excellent news, the grants have already supported lots of community activities across Wrexham and I would encourage anyone who is thinking of setting up a community group or wants to build on an existing group to get in touch with the commissioning team.”

Grants can be used for sessions run by volunteers where people can meet together on a regular basis for activities. Proposals are invited from individuals and organisations for activities such as:

    • Lunch with good company
    • Sharing hobbies
    • Learning new skills
    • Social enterprise / co-operative

  • Cold Caller Sentenced

    Cold Caller Sentenced

A cold caller who tried to carry out unnecessary work to an elderly couple’s property to the tune of £28,000 was found guilty last month to 3 offences under Consumer Protection laws has now been sentenced.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

Laurence Newberry was given 12 months per offence (3 in total) suspended for 18 months.

    • ordered to pay £1000 compensation to be paid to the elderly couple
    • 300 hours community service
    • Criminal Behaviour Order for 5 years to prevent him from cold calling by phone/in person across the UK
    • £2500 costs awarded

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “This sentence sends a clear message to those who prey on elderly people that this sort of behaviour will not be accepted and Trading Standards and the courts will do everything in their power to ensure they are brought to justice and punished. It is also great to see the court using its powers to impose a criminal behaviour order and control future conduct. If this offender is caught knocking on doors, regardless of his motive, anywhere in the UK in the next five years he risks a prison sentence for contempt of court”

Advice from Trading Standards: “If you think you might need work doing, find reputable traders and obtain a few quotes before agreeing to get work done. Check when and how payment will be made. Use recommendations and make sure you have the full details of any business before you commit to work. If you are unsure get help from friends or family. Never agree to work offered by cold callers on the doorstep”

If you see anything suspicious or you want to report an incident call:

    Police on 101

Or Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 03454 040506.

Siop/Shop “complements all things that Tŷ Pawb has to offer and an excellent example of this is the former Hippodrome light which was moved to the South Arcade after being restored. The lamps are proving very popular and there’s a waiting list for them whilst more are lovingly produced!

  • Re-affirming our commitment to the Armed Forces

Re-affirming our commitment to the Armed Forces

We know Wrexham has long links with the armed forces.

So it’s right that we recognise that link and do what we can to support our armed forces community.

Cllr David Griffiths, Armed Forces Champion for Wrexham Council, signed a new Armed Forces Covenant in a ceremony at Hightown Barracks.

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

The council originally signed the covenant back in 2013, along with a number of key partners such as North Wales Police, the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Glyndŵr University, AVOW and representatives from the army, navy and air force.

Recently, the Ministry of Defence has encouraged organisations to sign their own covenants, so they’re each recognised individually for their commitment to the pledge.

To re-state Wrexham Council’s commitment, Cllr Griffiths signed a new covenant alongside Colonel Nick Lock, Deputy Commander 160 Brigade.

Shenkin IV, regimental mascot of the Royal Welsh, was in attendance for the ceremony, alongside military personnel and members of the Wrexham Armed Forces Covenant Working Group, who ensure the commitments to the pledge are carried out.

Cllr Griffiths said: “Since initially signing the Armed Forces Covenant back in 2013, we’ve worked alongside a number of partners to carry out a lot of important work to support veterans and our armed forces community.

“I was very pleased to be able to reaffirm our commitment to the armed forces community – the armed forces are held in very high esteem in Wrexham and we as an area have strong links with the armed forces, so it’s only proper that we recognise that and support them.”

Some of the work carried out by the group since the covenant was signed includes support for our Armed Forces Community housing schemes at Tŷ Dewr and Tŷ Ryan, both of which are now full and supporting veterans in their move toward independent living.

These projects secured more than £1.6million of investment from the MOD and will continue to provide much-needed help in the future.

The Royal British Legion drop-in centre now hosts a peer support group named Woody’s Lodge, which gives practical help and support to members of our armed forces community on any issues they have.

We’ve also seen backing for our Armed Forces Liaison Officer Janette Williams, whose post was funded by the MOD.

Janette has worked with local groups to secure more than £58,000 in small grants from the Armed Forces Covenant Trust Fund in the last 18 months.

Like to go off roading? Read more…..

As the warmer days and lighter evenings arrive many of us are looking forward to getting out and about and generally being more active.

Some enjoy the more extreme activities such as off-roading in their 4×4 vehicles, quad bike racing and moto X etc., and get great pleasure out of it. But please be aware if this is your type of activity, that some advertised events are not legal and may be causing untold damage to our countryside 🙁

ARTS, MARKETS, COMMUNITY EVENTS – GET NEWS FROM TŶ PAWB STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX.

The same situations crop up all over the UK and Wrexham is no different but here we are becoming increasingly concerned of wilful damage being undertaken within some designated woodland areas which are subject to statutory protection in the form of a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).

A TPO means that anyone found wilfully damaging, pruning, felling or destroying trees within the woodland, without prior consent from the council, may find themselves liable to criminal prosecution. The TPO extends from the smallest sapling to the oldest veteran tree.

Areas around the county borough will be monitored in the coming weeks and we’ll be working with North Wales Police to ensure that our protected woodlands are respected and that off-roading activities adhere to the relevant legislation.

Should you wish to obtain further advice regarding Tree Preservation Orders or to discuss the protective status of a particular woodland please do not hesitate to contact us on 01978 298994, email planning@wrexham.gov.uk or visit www.wrexham.gov.uk/trees.

So please be careful – enjoy your off-roading activities but please be mindful of the area you are driving in and ask yourself “should I be here?”
