    Fly-tipping ‘Not Up My Street’

Fly-tipping in Wales has been on the rise in recent years, and it has a devastating impact on the environment and our local communities. Whilst illegally dumped rubbish looks bad, it is also dangerous and expensive to remove.

The nationwide campaign is being run as part of Caru Cymru (a Welsh phrase meaning ‘Love Wales’) – an inclusive movement led by Keep Wales Tidy and councils to inspire people to take action, and care for the environment.

We’re urging tenants to do the right thing when getting rid of unwanted household items. It’s easier than you think, and cheaper than a fine.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive Owen Derbyshire said: “Fly-tipping has been on the rise in recent years, with the disruption caused by the pandemic having a clear impact on the cleanliness of our communities. Dumped items on the street costs local authorities millions to remove, and – put simply – looks awful.

“Our new campaign looks to encourage communities across Wales to keep their local areas free from household waste and say ‘Not Up My Street’.

“Thankfully, upcycling and repairing items has never been more popular. That’s why we’re excited to be working alongside local authorities and housing associations to help communities do their bit, both through our community engagement events, and in our pop-up repair cafes.

“Disposing of your unwanted household items is easier than you think, and – crucially – cheaper than a fine.”

WHY the Guildhall will be lit Purple 27/01/2022 between 5-8pm

Friday January 27 is Holocaust Memorial Day. On this day we are asked to pause to pay tribute to those persecuted and killed during the Holocaust and other genocides throughout the world.

Mark Pritchard, Leader of Wrexham Council, said: “We are a very diverse city, and we will always stand up to inequality and inhumanity in all its forms.”

“It’s so important that we never forget the horrors of the Holocaust, and timely reminders such as marking Holocaust Memorial Day are vital in making sure that we don’t forget the tragedies of the past.”

Cllr Paul Roberts, Lead member for Partnerships and Community Safety said: “On Holocaust Memorial Day we take time to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. Illuminating the Guildhall is our way of showing that we won’t forget the victims.

The St David’s Day parade is considered one of the highlights of the year in Wrexham and 2023 will be no exception as Menter Iaith Fflint a Wrecsam, in partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council, have once again organised exciting celebrations on Wednesday, March 1st 2023.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

This year there will be entertainment from various artists outside The Guildhall to welcome the crowds from 12:00pm onwards and the parade will assemble at 12.45pm before starting at 1.00pm (sharp!) under the leadership of Band Cambria.

The parade will make its way through the town ending back at Queen’s Square where everyone will sing the National Anthem and Calon Lân together, led by Andy Hickie.

We warmly invite individuals and organisations, including all the schools, from across the county to join in the fun and to once again bring their colourful banners.

Wrexham Mayor Cllr. Brian Cameron said:

Wrexham’s St David’s Day Parade has always been a well-attended, loud and colourful celebration of Welsh culture, and I’m sure that this year will be no exception.”

These celebrations are a part of numerous events that will take place across Wales to celebrate our Patron Saint’s Day, so use #DewiWrecsam on social media for information, to share photos, and to follow the event throughout the day.

  • A PSPO order helps us deal with anti-social behaviour in the City Centre

A PSPO order helps us deal with anti-social behaviour in the City Centre

We are looking at carrying out consultation on our city centre Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

The PSPO allows us to carry out enforcement across a defined area in the city centre on certain anti-social behaviours or activities. This includes things like use of drugs and alcohol; public urinating or defecating; intimidating and other Anti-Social Behaviours.

We propose to make another PSPO, and want your thoughts on the proposed conditions within it.

    Not just about enforcement alone

PSPOs were first introduced in Wrexham in 2017. They are an important tool in dealing with anti-social issues, however these issues cannot be solved by enforcement alone – most of them require a multi-agency response, where we work with partners to provide help to those people who need it.

Partnership work, including through the work of the Community Safety Partnership, have seen many successful outcomes over the past few years.

We want to make sure that everyone feels safe in Wrexham city centre, and that the area is free from anti-social behaviour – whilst striking a balance between making sure enforcement powers are in place, and providing support to vulnerable individuals when help is needed.

The PSPO is part of that response, so it’s important to make sure to have your say.

Lead member for Partnerships and Community Safety Cllr Paul Robers said: “We are really keen on hearing your views whether you live, work, or visit Wrexham City Centre as your opinion matters.

  • When is loading, not loading?

    When is loading, not loading?

Loading (or unloading) is when you are continuously moving goods between a vehicle and a property. Goods also should be either heavy or bulky to qualify for this exemption

To make sure you really know if you are loading or unloading – and avoid a fine – here’s a rundown of what loading or unloading is NOT!

    • Parking up where your vehicle causes an obstruction
    • Staying put when you’ve been asked to move by a police officer or traffic enforcement officer
    • Leaving your vehicle while you are not loading or unloading – either having break or packing up or unpacking items within the property

What happens if you break the rules?

If you park a vehicle in a pedestrian zone when you shouldn’t, you can be issued with a penalty notice of £70 by the council’s traffic enforcement officers.

It’s your responsibility as the vehicle driver to check the signs in place and know the rules of the road.

  • Restoration of peat land plans approved by Executive Board

Restoration of peat land plans approved by Executive Board

Land near Fenns Bank and Bronington could be restored to peat land which naturally stores carbon following a decision by today’s Executive Board.

This project supports one of the themes identified in our Decarbonisation Plan –  Land Use and Green Infrastructure.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

The land contains some areas of peat soils, which are extremely valuable for their carbon sequestration properties, and is also suitable for additional planting to increase our hedgerows, tree and woodland stock, support nature and enhance the overall biodiversity over the area.

Peat is made up of organic carbon that has been trapped in the earth for thousands of years, and it plays a crucial role in naturally trapping and storing carbon. Peat can only lockdown carbon when it is actively growing, and that growth can only take place in healthy habitats – whilst damaged peatlands will release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, meaning it is all the more important that they  are properly managed.

The land is in close proximity to Fenn’s, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve which, with Wem Moss and Cadney Moss, are collectively a Site of Special Scientific Interest forming Britain’s third-largest lowland raised bog.

Going forward there could be opportunities to develop the area as a public open space, improve the accessibility of the existing public footpath and enable access to nature, educational activity and learning spaces for local communities.

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Leader of the Council, said, “This is a unique project and one that has the potential to enhance the area whilst taking carbon out of our environment. I’d like to thank those involved in identifying the land and putting forward exciting plans for its restoration.

“The ecological systems it will encourage and support will be huge and Wrexham will be leading the way in Wales when it comes to ground breaking projects to reduce and offset carbon emissions.”

Cllr David A Bithell, Deputy Leader and Climate Change Champion, said, “We declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency in September 2019 and lots of work has taken place since then to address the emergency. Through this project we can show that we’re putting our decarbonisation plans at the heart of our decision making and really making a difference.”

You can read the full report here.

    Background information

We declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency in September 2019, and published a Decarbonisation Plan (The Plan) in May 2021.

The Plan sits above action plans around five key themes: Buildings and Energy, Transport and Mobility, Land Use and Green Infrastructure, Procurement and Supply Chain and Influencing and Enabling Change as well as some higher level actions which are integral to our response to addressing the climate emergency.

  • £10,000 approved for Yellow and Blue

£10,000 approved for Yellow and Blue

Financial support of £10,000 to Yellow and Blue (YaB) to enhance and extend its cost of living support to residents has been agreed at this morning’s Executive Board.

YaB is a non-profit organisation primarily supporting vulnerable members of the Wrexham Community. YaB aims to help anyone struggling, facing short or long term hardship, illness and or disability.

Missed bin collection? Let us know.

During the festive period of 2022, YaB provided a safe, warm, friendly and free environment where individuals and communities could enjoy refreshments, social activity, information and advice and the company of other people when many buildings, services and organisations were closed for the Christmas break due to Bank Holidays.

The decision to allocate £10k to YaB will enable the organisation to expand, enhance and replicate its provision into spring 2023 to:

    • Provide refreshments, snacks and more substantive meals
    • Meet the additional expenses associated with extending their opening hours e.g. internet, heating, lighting, cleaning and refuse costs, facilities for charging mobile phones and IT equipment, enrichment items and activities etc
    • Produce promotional material including physical and electronic  posters, notices, posts, tweets etc

Cllr David A Bithell, Chair of the cross party Cost of Living Group, said, “YaB is staffed by volunteers and does an amazing job with those needing help and advice. They have a fantastic food larder that was used 467 times in December alone. They deserve our support as do the individuals and families they are helping.

Cllr Beverley Parry Jones, Anti Poverty Champion, said, “There’s no questioning that times are hard at the moment, particularly for the most vulnerable. YaB offers a safe and welcoming place. I know the funding given will be well spent on those who deserve it most.”

The allocation follows the allocation of £141,000 in November to support a number of initiatives to help with the cost of living crisis. You can read more about that here:

£22,000 to help Wrexham Foodbank expand its provision

Approval was also given at the Executive Board for the employment in partnership of a Food Network Coordinator to scope, map and establish a Cross Sector Food Partnership in the county borough. £97,000 has been awarded by Welsh Government to fund this position.
