Sports Award recognises “unsung heroes”, says coach

There are just a few days left to nominate your local sporting heroes for the Wrexham County Borough Council Sports Awards 2018, supported by Active Wrexham.

We want to hear from anyone who thinks someone they know is a sporting hero – be that a professional athlete, or a hard-working volunteer supporting their local club through coaching or maintenance.

There’s a whole range of sporting groups and clubs across Wrexham at the community level, covering a wide variety of sports.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

And such groups wouldn’t be anywhere without the legions of volunteers supporting them – giving up their time and effort in order to keep grassroots clubs and organisations going, and giving young people and adults alike a place to socialise and exercise.

One of those volunteers is Kieran Howard, who coaches the Under 14s and Under 11s at both Brymbo Football Club and Cefn Druids Football Club.

Kieran took the Adult Volunteer award in the 2016 Sports Awards, and has also been nominated for this year’s awards in the Community Coach category.

He manages more than 50 children at the clubs – and not just on match days, as he’s also in charge of coaching throughout the week.

He also won a McDonald’s People Award 2016 at the Welsh Community Football Awards for his commitment to Brymbo, and is also coach for Cefn Druids FC.

“Award is a pleasure and quite humbling”

Kieran said: “It was a pleasure and quite humbling – to know that a lot of people appreciate what I do. It’s nice to have won something at the local level.

He added: “There’s a lot of unsung heroes out there, who give a lot of time and commitment, and a lot of it is unpaid.

“I do it because I enjoy that sport and enjoy being involved in my community, and giving something back to my community.”

He added: “You’re looking to make that difference in the community, especially with some of the kids I work with.

“You might make someone push that much further, and you can give someone an opportunity.”

He also said that anyone unsure about nominating one of their local sporting heroes should do so, as such recognition was always welcomed by volunteers.

“It’s nice – even the thought of someone going out of their way to make that nomination. It’s nice to get that recognition by that parent, or the player themselves – it’s recognition that you’re doing fine, at the end of the day.”

Don’t miss out – nominate your sporting hero

Cllr Paul Rogers, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, with responsibility for Leisure, said: “As Kieran himself notes, there are a lot of unsung heroes out there, and it’d be a shame for us to miss any of them.

“If you think someone is worthy of a Sports Award, put them forward.”

To nominate, either e-mail sportsawards@wrexham.gov.uk for a nomination form, or visit the online nomination form here.

  • DON’T MISS YOUR BIN COLLECTION THIS CHRISTMAS 2017!

DON’T MISS YOUR BIN COLLECTION THIS CHRISTMAS 2017!

There will be some slight changes to the bin and recycling dates this Christmas.  Residents are reminded to check the dates of their bin collection over the festive period with changes taking place between 23rd December – 6th January.

We are particularly asking people whose usual bin day would be Christmas day to remember to put their bins and recycling out 2 days earlier on Saturday 23rd December. After the 26th December all bin collections will be a day later (including collections taking place on Saturdays).  Normal collections will resume after the 6th January.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW

To download or print your calendar, go here and type in your postcode. Once your postcode is typed in, just click on your property and the system will highlight your relevant collection day and calendar – this will give you the chance to either print off or save the calendar. We also have a limited number of calendars available to pick up from the Contact Centre on Lord Street.

Cllr David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said:  “We want to ensure that residents are aware of the changes to their bin collection days during the festive period. Particularly for those residents whose bins are due to be collected on Christmas day, as this year they will be collected 2 days earlier on Saturday 23rd December. To make sure that all residents are aware of how the changes will affect them we ask that they check their bin collection calendars online or sign up to the MyUpdates email reminder service.”

Your bins will still be collected over the festive season, but the day of your collection may change so it is important to check the new 2017/18 refuse and recycling calendars which are available online for residents to download.

To make things easier and to ensure you never miss a collection again, why not sign up to our MyUpdates service. By signing up to the refuse collection reminder on MyUpdates, you’ll receive an email the day before your collection.  Just go to www.wrexham.gov.uk/register and fill in your details.

  • Missed your bin collection recently?

    Missed your bin collection recently?

We’ve some news for those who missed their bin collections on Friday, December 8 and Monday, December 11.

We’ll collect just your Black Bin on Saturday, December 16. We won’t be collecting any green bins or recyclables – they’ll be emptied on the next scheduled pick-up day.

At the moment, staff are busy clearing ice and snow  – but as we expect temperatures to stay very low things may change.  We are trying to minimise disruption to the waste service and we ask for your patience whilst we work through this difficult weather.

For the rest of the week, we expect bin collections to go ahead as planned.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“It has been a difficult time for the crews and all other staff involved with preparing for and dealing with the snow and ice who have all worked tirelessly to make sure the main routes remain clear for motorists.

“We can now turn some of our attention to clearing communal, shopping areas and side routes whilst making sure priority routes remain clear.  I would like to thank everyone for their kind words on social media and for their patience over the past few days.”

  • “Welcoming” Wrexham set to accept refugee families

“Welcoming” Wrexham set to accept refugee families

Further refugees fleeing a humanitarian crisis could be welcomed to Wrexham, with further council support recommended.

Wrexham could welcome further refugee families from Syria, under the Home Office-led Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme.

The continuing conflict in Syria has forced more than 6.5million people from their homes, displaced 2.7million people to neighbouring countries, and left millions more within Syria in dire need of aid.

Wrexham Council is one of a number of local authorities across the UK which have taken part in the Home Office scheme in order to source accommodation and support for Syrian refugees.

The Council first agreed to support five Syrian refugee families in May 2015, with families arriving during the 2016-17 financial year.

This was followed up by an agreement in December 2016 to support a further five families during 2017-18.

Wrexham Council’s Executive Board will vote on accepting further Syrian refugee families during 2018/19 and 2019/20, at the same rate of five families per year.

Funding for the scheme is provided by the Home Office, and covers the costs incurred in supporting refugees for a maximum of five years.

Wrexham Council is co-ordinating the scheme locally, with support from a number of charity and public partners.

The proposals will be discussed at Executive Board on Tuesday, December 12.

Since Wrexham Council agreed to take part in the scheme, eight families – totalling 36 people – were identified and allocated to Wrexham by the Home Office.

Those families already settled in Wrexham have received a “warm welcome”, and have already reported strong support and a welcoming spirit from their neighbouring community.

    “Proposal follows ‘warm welcome’”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Partnerships, Public Protection, Community Safety and Community Safety, said: “Wrexham Council first agreed to support five Syrian families in May, 2015, and agreed to support a further five in December 2016.

“This proposal comes as part of that history of support, and the success of the project so far – as well as the warm welcome refugees have received in previous years.

“Individual agencies and departments have also reported that – subject to continued adequate Home Office funding and the resources available – they would support the recommendation.”

“I look forward to presenting the report to my Executive Board colleagues on December 12.”

  • Victorian Market a roaring success

    Victorian Market a roaring success

Once again Wrexham has been blown away by a fantastic Victorian Christmas market which is currently being held at St Gilles’ this afternoon.

Starting at noon today and running through until this evening, the annual event has grown in both size and popularity year on year and this time around it’s even bigger and better than before.

Over 100 stalls are set-up stretching across St Gilles and Queen’s Square and there’s been plenty of visitors browsing for some great bargains to add to their Christmas shopping. You can pick yourself up some wonderful items with wine, sweets and treats all appearing in a wide variety. This is a great way to build on last year’s successful market (video below) which attracted 15,000 people.

Not only will you have the chance to pick up some great gifts for your loved ones, but all whilst you make your way around you will be entertained throughout by a brass band and barrel organist whilst the little ones will be enthralled by our carousel and Punch and Judy show – there really is something for everyone.

“What better way to get into the wonderful Christmas spirit than to drop by and enjoy the variety of things on offer at the Victorian Market” said councilor Terry Evans, who has already been among the festive fun this afternoon.

“It’s brilliant to see the people of Wrexham coming out to support this great event, mixing together and embracing the season of good will.

“The Christmas season always brings a boost to the town and events like this aren’t just a community boost, but also benefit the local economy which can only be a good thing”.

Haven’t had the chance to make it down yet? The market and entertainment will be open until 8pm tonight, so come on down!

Want to take part in Dydd Llun Pawb?

Community groups from in and around Wrexham are invited to take part in a parade celebrating the things that make the town so special, as part of the official opening of Tŷ Pawb.

Tŷ Pawb is the new £4.5 Million development in the heart of Wrexham.

Under construction on the site of the former People’s Market, and supported by a £2.3 million grant from the Arts Council of Wales, £700,000 from Welsh Government, and an additional £1.5 million from Wrexham Council, the development will bring together markets, businesses, theatre, galleries, food and drink under one roof in the town centre.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS NOW.

Tŷ Pawb will open its doors to the public on Easter Monday, April 2, 2018 with Dydd Llun Pawb – a day-long celebration with a carnival atmosphere, featuring live music, performing arts, craft, food and drink stalls, and a range of hands-on activities for visitors of all ages.

Welsh for ‘Everybody’s Monday’, Dydd Llun Pawb brings back an old Wrexham tradition, where locals would descend into the town for a day of festivities on the Monday following the annual spring market.

Dydd Llun Pawb will commence with a parade, celebrating all that is special about Wrexham.

Moving through Wrexham town centre, and led by a marching band, the parade will feature giant versions of six brand new Wrexham Souvenirs, selected in November by a public vote.

    Groups invited to take part

30 local groups will be able to join them, each celebrating their own unique contribution to the community.

To take part, community groups must be available on Monday, April 2 from noon until 2.00pm, and able to receive a visit from a local artist between January 15 and March 2, 2018.

The artist will help them to design and produce their parading materials. There is no charge for participating, and people of all ages, interests and abilities are encouraged to take part.

For those who are not members of any group, but would like to join the parade, a number of public workshops will also be held.

Further details of the day’s events will be revealed in the New Year.

Groups interested in taking part in the Dydd Llun Pawb parade should contact enquiries@typawb.wales before Friday December, 22.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said:  “Ty Pawb’s role is to serve and celebrate the community of Wrexham, and Dydd Llun Pawb will be a testament to that.

“From selecting the name to constructing the furniture, many people have supported the centre’s development from the outset, and a huge parade to celebrate the wonderful contributions so many people make to the town will be a great way to say thank you as we open!”

  • Wrexham’s Stories for Dydd Llun Pawb Revealed

Wrexham’s Stories for Dydd Llun Pawb Revealed

Six favourite stories about Wrexham have been revealed- as voted for by you!

Following a public poll where nearly 200 people voted on a shortlist of 25 weird and wonderful stories relating to Wrexham, we are delighted to reveal which stories were chosen as the six favourites.

These six stories will be made into souvenirs of Wrexham by six different artists, and will be available for sale on Dydd Llun Pawb – the opening day for Tŷ Pawb – on April 2.

The Oriel Wrecsam/Tŷ Pawb team have undergone months of consultation in order to find out what the general public believe to be the most interesting stories to represent Wrexham. The 25 stories ranged from wild street parties to a winner of Miss World to an enormous hidden stash of Lego bricks buried beneath the town.

The most popular with 23% of the votes is the Welsh language heritage of our town, which caught the public’s imagination. As Hannah Wright, who shared her story with us, said, “Welsh is relevant, traditional, current and cultural.”

The full list of six winning stories, amassing a collective 89% of votes, is as follows:

    • Story 20 (23% votes) – ‘Welsh language’
    • Story 7 (13%) – ‘A small world’ – No matter where you go in the world, you always seem to meet someone from Wrexham!
    • Story 22 (13%) – ‘A life dedicated to others: Marjorie Dykins’
    • Story 25 (11%) – ‘Croeso i Wrecsam: Welcoming the World’
    • Story 1 (10%) – ‘Wrexham AFC: A life-saving club!’
    • Story 24 (9%) – ‘The town that makes!’

The six stories will now be allocated to the six souvenir artists who we revealed last month – Sophia Leadill, John Merrill, Marcus Orlandi, Nicholas Pankhurst, Martha Todd and Bedwyr Williams.

The artists will produce a prototype souvenir based on their allocated story in time for the opening of Tŷ Pawb and the Dydd Llun Pawb parade on Monday, April 2, 2018.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “I’m very pleased to see that the people of Wrexham have voted on those stories chosen to be represented as part of Dydd Llun Pawb – and it’s especially pleasing to see the most popular choice was based on the town’s Welsh language heritage.

“I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I look forward to seeing what our artists produce and unveil on Dydd Llun Pawb.”
