Cllr Andy Williams, The Mayor of Wrexham, said: “It’s excellent value and shows some of the truly beautiful areas of scenery and architecture in Wrexham. We really do have a fantastic location here and the Calendar is a reminder to us all of this. I hope you will support my charities this year by buying a copy of the Wonders of Wrexham 2019 Calendar.”

    January – December

        • Bangor on Dee Bridge and Church taken by Adrian Wright.  A cracking shot of this beautiful bridge which dates back to around 1660. the five arched stone structure is believed to have been built by Inigo Jones.
        • Gresford Wheel taken by Sally Davies. The iconic headgear of the former Gresford Colliery was preserved as part of the Gresford Disaster Memorial. Every year a service is held on the site to remember those who lost their lives in this terrible disaster. All four of our judges voted this the number one! This photo will also be the feature photo on the front of the Calendar.
        • All Saints church in Gresford taken by Steve Harvey. The peel of these bells make them one of the 7 Wonders of Wales so it’s only right that this photo made the final 13. Built in the 15 Century it really is worth a visit.
        • Bersham Waterfall taken by Carl Edwards. This is always one of our favourite views of Wrexham and we couldn’t resist including at least one view of this beautiful waterfall situated right here in Wrexham.
        • Farndon Bridge taken by Ian Lucas, MP, Farndon Bridge – OK this is seen by many to be in England! It is however a medieval gateway into Wrexham and does look splendid in this shot. Welcome to Wales!
        • The Mere at Hanmer taken by Paul Wynn. This Mere is a little gem in a beautiful and historic part of Wrexham – the Maelor. It is evidence that you don’t have to go far in Wrexham to see outstanding views.
        • Chirk Castle taken by Steve Harvey.  A Grade 1 Listed Building, property of the National Trust and with 700 years of history it’s no wonder it’s featured in this calendar. Thanks to the National Trust for allowing us to use the image.
        • Llwyn Isaf taken by Iolanda Banu. Right in the heart of the town centre is this little chappie – who, with his friends, are charming children and adults alike. The sheep trail takes you around the county borough and they’re all as charming as this one.
        • Bellevue Park Bandstand taken by Paul Wynn. Another town centre gem – this Victorian park is very popular with locals and visitors alike and the bandstand is host to a number of Music in the Park events in the summer months.
        • Penrhos Engine House taken by Ben Hughes. A reminder of our industrial heritage with this Scheduled Ancient Monument at Brymbo. Built by John Wilkinson in the late 18 Century it’s thought to be the earliest surviving colliery engine house in Wales.
        • Bank Street taken by Danny Edwards. One of the oldest streets in Wrexham, Bank Street, remains a busy and quaint thoroughfare in the town centre. Home to many old buildings and a must see for visitors to the town centre.
        • Pontcysyllte Aqueduct taken by Daniel Cooke the centre piece of the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site and a sight not to be missed – this fantastic image sums up the longevity of this structure. How many winters has it seen? Well over 250 and still looking cool!

    A “must visit” place

Event Orqaniser, Colin Trueman (Vod Music), said: “We were overwhelmed by the amazing support for last Saturdays Record Fair at Tŷ Pawb and would like to thank all the Tŷ Pawb staff, food stalls, market and of course visitors for making our first visit such a memorable day. Record Dealers were extremely impressed with the venue and the versatility of the space, the great atmosphere (which was buzzing) and the way all the stalls, arts and community events combined together under one roof.

“For us the really pleasing thing was to hear that many first-time visitors could not believe what a gem they had on their doorstep, vowing to make it a must visit place in the future.

“A final thank thank to Halycon Dreams and all those who spun their vinyl on the turntables, the great range of sounds provided a fitting backdrop to the Fair. Music is about community bringing people together and we hope to be back here soon.”

    A huge Christmas in store

Lead Member for People – Communities, Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, Cllr Hugh Jones, said: “It’s great to see that Tŷ Pawb is now consistently fulfilling it’s potential as a vibrant community hub in Wrexham and a venue which will draw shoppers and visitors in from all around.

“As well as the hugely successful record fair, we also had a sold out children’s cinema showing the night before. Saturday’s have now become particularly busy as a family destination with all sort of activities, crafts and music events taking place alongside the fantastic shopping and eating experience offered by our traders, and of course the wonderful art on display in the galleries.

“Many more activities for all ages are planned for the Christmas period and I would encourage everyone to pick up a copy of the events guide at Tŷ Pawb, or download a copy online.”

  • How you can be a recycling winner this Christmas

How you can be a recycling winner this Christmas

    ‘Tis almost the season… 😉

Supermarkets already have their Christmas aisles set-up, and they’re full to the brim with various wrapping papers, decorations and Christmas cards.

You might have already started stocking up on some of these things…

But when you’re doing so, it’s well worth considering which of these can be recycled.

In Wrexham, we’re doing a great job with our recycling – and at Christmas it’s important to keep our momentum going…particularly when you consider the amounts of materials we’ll be dealing with.

Cllr David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said:

“The people of Wrexham continue to do a fantastic job with their recycling. The Christmas period will mean people have even more things they can recycle than usual, so it’s important to take the time to thank people for their efforts and remind them of the great job they’re doing.”

Fact: With all the card packaging we use in Wales over Christmas, we could make a cardboard motorway from Wales to Lapland!

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

Here’s a bit of information to help you become a recycling winner this Christmas.

    What can’t I recycle?

Foil wrapping paper is non-recyclable. It may look pretty, but if you want to be a recycling winner, it’s best to steer clear.

Tags containing glitter can’t be recycled…

Also, decorative bows and ribbons are non-recyclable. Maybe store them away for next year?

Tip: Please remove masking tape and staples from cardboard boxes before recycling them.

What can I recycle at kerbside?

Large sweet tins can be recycled alongside your cans and plastics in your wheelie box/recycling boxes.

You can also recycle wrapping paper (not foil), envelopes and Christmas cards with your other paper in the usual way. Paper and card gift bags can be recycled here too – just remember to remove any non-recyclable handles.

Foil trays from your tasty mince pies can be recycled with your cans and plastic bottles. Just make sure there’s no leftover food attached.

Fact: Did you know that if your recycling boxes are full, you can leave extra recycling out for collection, in carrier bags or spare boxes? Just make sure you separate the different materials, as you would normally, and place them next to your usual recycling boxes on the kerbside.

    Don’t forget about food!

Christmas also means lots of turkey bones and leftovers that can be recycled in your food caddy.

For a reminder of what foods are recyclable, please take a look at our blog from last month.

With our roll-out of free caddy liners underway, it’s a great time to start thinking about recycling food, if you don’t already do-so.

And don’t forget – if you’re running low on caddy liners, just tie an empty one to your caddy handle on your collection day and we’ll leave you a new roll…

Or alternatively you can get them from our recycling centres…just speak to an attendant and ask them for another roll.

And if it can’t be recycled at kerbside…

You can take many other items to one of our recycling centres to be recycled or re-used.

Old or unwanted Christmas decorations can be recycled through the Nightingale House Hospice re-use shop at Bryn Lane household recycling centre…

Also, look out for the designated areas at both Plas Madoc and Brymbo household recycling centres, where you can leave items for the re-use shop.

And, you can take real Christmas trees to be recycled at our recycling centres, if they won’t fit in your green bin.

If you want, you can bring your excess wrapping paper to our recycling centres too. Just make sure you separate your paper from your foil wrap before arriving at the centre.

    Bin reminders

Remember, you can even subscribe to a bin collection day reminder which you receive via e-mail every week the day before your collection day.

This is especially helpful to residents over the Christmas season when collection days can change!

  • Congratulations to bowls club for disability award

Congratulations to bowls club for disability award

Getting people into sport is important – and making sure disabled people can take part in the sports they want is even more important.

The efforts of a Wrexham-based bowling club to help members with vision impairment, learning disabilities or recovering from strokes have recently been recognised by a nationwide body, which aims to increase the involvement of disabled people in sport, and help sporting clubs to widen their inclusion.

Bradley Park Bowling Club was awarded the Disability Sport Wales insport Ribbon for their commitment and dedication to inclusion and disabled people, after working hard to offer sessions for people with a range of disabilities.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

The club’s Spot the Jack club provided sessions to people with learning disabilities, by adapting the sport to cater for various physical and learning disabilities, where players and carers can take part in the game on an inclusive and accessible surface.

The club also provides Touchwood sessions to members with visual impairments, where players compete in a specially-adapted game with inclusive equipment that caters for various impairments.

And the club also offers sessions to people recovering from strokes, working directly with the Stroke Association to offer the support needed.

Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, with responsibility for Leisure, said: “Disability sport provides a fantastic way for people to make new friends and socialise more often, and it can also provide opportunities for recovery and therapy for people with chronic health issues.

“However, this also requires a lot of hard work on the part of clubs and groups to make sure they have the right resources and people in place to support such members.

“Bradley Parking Bowling Club wholly deserves the Disability Sport Wales insport Ribbon for its dedication to all of its members, and I congratulate all at the club for their efforts.”

Terri Ritchie, Disability Sport Wales officer, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with a community-invested club, who are committed to inclusion and equality in Wrexham.

    “Well done Bradley Bowls!”

  • 5 interesting things about Acton…

    5 interesting things about Acton…

Continuing our theme on interesting things about places in Wrexham County Borough, next up on our list is Acton 🙂

Acton is a place with a large amount of history – some of which you probably already know – but we’re going to try to include some obscure things you mightn’t have heard too.

Here’s five interesting things about Acton 🙂

    1. Walking in Acton Park

We know, we know…we just said ‘obscure’ and walking in Acton Park is hardly that. But it’s simply too good not to include – I mean, where do we start?

Shall we start with the wonderful lake that’s the centre feature to the park, and massively popular with keen anglers?

Or what about the beautiful trees and large network of paths that you can explore?

Oh! What about the huge variety of wildflowers and the lovely Japanese garden?

And that’s not even mentioning the incredible history that comes with Acton Park, including the Cunliffe family and the notorious Hanging Judge Jeffreys…

Acton Park is simply great 🙂

And if you need further proof, take a look at the short video we made.

    2. The Welsh Cup final

Did you know that back in 1878 – March 30, to be precise – Acton played host to the first-ever football Welsh FA Cup final?

The match saw Wrexham take on Ruabon Druids and Wrexham prevailed 1-0 courtesy of a James Davies goal in the final minute of the match…how dramatic!

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

The final took place at Acton Park after Sir Robert Alfred Cunliffe donated the pitch.

19 clubs entered the inaugural completion, but only 17 actually fielded a team.

Another thing to add to the list of footballing firsts that Wrexham can claim!

    3. The Hanging Judge

Wrexham has had its fair share of infamous characters, but perhaps no-one can claim such infamy as Hanging Judge Jeffreys!

George Jeffreys lived in Acton Hall in the 17th century. He led an eventful life and made many enemies along the way…

He famously liked a drink or two, and in 1680 he became the Chief Justice of Chester. This was despite him being labelled “the worst judge that ever disgraced the bench.”

Jeffreys then ensured his name would go down in history through the Bloody Assizes of 1685. In this, nearly 300 people were executed and many more were shipped off as slaves to the West Indies.

Eventually, his behaviour wasn’t tolerated, and in 1688 a coup was staged against him.

As he tried to flee, he was caught unsurprisingly in a pub with his pockets stuffed full with 35,000 guineas and a load of silverware. He later died in the Tower of London in 1689.

For a bit more info about Judge Jeffreys and the history of Acton Park, take a look at this blog.

    4. Acton Community Resource Centre

Acton is home to a great community resource centre. It’s a very welcoming place and they have something for all ages.

Music, sports, fitness, education, recreation, leisure, the arts, and training are just some of the things that take place in the facility.

So if you have some free time and are thinking about building on your skills and giving back to the community, you’re invited to come along and get involved.

A couple of months ago, we visited the centre to chat to Purple Orchids (an over 50’s group) as they celebrated their first birthday. Take a look at our video from the day 🙂

    5. Acton Dog

Acton Dog is one of the figures most associated with Wrexham 🙂

The Cunliffe family, who resided at Acton Hall simply loved greyhounds…so much so, that the greyhound was actually chosen as the family crest in 1759.

In 1820, Sir Foster had a new gateway built at Acton Hall, on top of which were four carved, wooden dogs.

The gateway became known as ‘The Four Dogs’ and it was a much-loved landmark for the people of Wrexham.

The dogs became symbols of Wrexham, and one of the original dogs (fondly referred to as The Acton Dog) is on display at Wrexham Museum 🙂

The gateway was repaired in 1982, and as the original dogs were in a poor state, copies were made to replace them.

So there’s still four dogs guarding the entrance to Acton Park estate today 🙂
