    5 interesting things about Rhosllanerchrugog

For our third instalment of interesting things about places in Wrexham County Borough, we’re focusing on Rhosllanerchrugog – or ‘Rhos’ as it’s more commonly known locally.

It was quite difficult to keep it down to just five things, but we eventually managed it…

So here’s our five interesting things about Rhosllanerchrugog 🙂

    1. Rosemarie Frankland

Rosemarie was born in Rhosllanerchrugog on February 1, 1943 and she would go on to achieve worldwide fame!

She was incredibly beautiful and at just 18 years of age, she was crowned Miss World in 1961…she was also the runner-up at Miss Universe 1961 too!

And all this was merely months after she was working behind the counter in Marks and Spencer.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

More than 10 million viewers saw her being crowned as Miss World, which added to her previous titles of Miss Lancashire, Miss Lake District and Miss Wales.

Rosemarie was also an aspiring actress, and she starred in a few movies, most notably ‘I’ll Take Sweden’ in 1965.

Sadly, Rosemarie passed away on December 2, 2000.

More of Rosemarie’s story can be found in this article from The Telegraph.

    2. Llanerchrugog estate and an extraordinary act of defiance

The old Llanerchrugog estate was owned by the Jones family from the early 1400’s up until the 19th century – which is remarkable in itself – but we’re going to focus on a single event that can only be described as an extraordinary act of defiance.

It took place in 1649, when the landowner, John Jones, suggested that he should be exempt from paying taxes.

He claimed this was due to his ancestry, which he dated back 2,400 years to Dyfnwal Moelmud, who was a Welsh king.

He gave an incredibly detailed account of his pedigree, which is recorded in the book ‘Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion’.

It’s incredible that he thought his ‘research’ could free him from paying his taxes, long before Ancestry.com ever existed 😉

It’s the only known account of a person using genealogy to claim a tax exemption.

    Wow!

    3. Mountain Reservoirs walk

There’s a great walk that starts in Rhosllanerchrugog that you might or mightn’t know about…

It involves a fairly gentle climb up to Esclusham Mountain and it’s highly recommended.

The walk begins at the Sun Inn, Hall Street, Rhosllanerchrugog and passes Park Lodge, which once formed part of the previously mentioned Llanerchrugog estate.

It later goes on to pass Tŷ Mawr and the Cae-llwyd reservoirs…with some extraordinary views along the way!

But be prepared, you’ll need the best part of a full day to complete the route. It’s a 5.5 mile walk and it’s advised that you allow at least three hours to complete it.

In truth, you’d best allow a little bit longer, so you can stop and take in some of the scenery 🙂

We also have an easy-to-follow walking guide for the route that you can download from our website

So get your walking boots at the ready 😉

    4. Rhosllanerchrugog mines

The development of Rhosllanerchrugog as a village is largely because of the beds of coal that were situated nearby.

This meant a coal mining community was established in the 18th century and it grew substantially from the 1840’s onwards.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of people moved here for work, and a lot of this immigration came from Welsh-speaking areas in West Wales. This led to Rhosllanerchrugog being renowned as a Welsh speaking area.

As an interesting side-note, the population of Welsh speakers didn’t fall beneath 50% until the 1981 census.

Rhosllanerchrugog has always had a strong local community.

And the strength of this local community is signified by the fact that the Stiwt theatre was actually paid for by weekly contributions from the miners’ wages 🙂

Which leads us nicely onto number five…

    5. The Stiwt theatre

Ah yes, the lovely 490-seater theatre…

It was founded in 1926 by the Miners’ Institute (which is where the word ‘Stiwt’ comes from).

    Theatr Stiwt

There’s always plenty going on at the Stiwt – be it pantomime, ballroom dance classes, or Saturday morning movies for the kids. They even recently showed the Rugby Union Autumn Internationals.

We recently did a blog article on the Stiwt and it’s well worth a look.

We hope you enjoyed our five interesting things about Rhosllanerchrugog 🙂

If you did, keep your eyes peeled as we’ll be featuring more places around Wrexham County Borough in the coming weeks!

  • Don’t take risks behind the wheel this Christmas

Don’t take risks behind the wheel this Christmas

With Christmas on the way, the festive party season will soon kick off.

We all know people like to enjoy a few drinks with friends or colleagues when on nights out in the run-up to Christmas.  With that in mind, we – alongside North Wales Police – want to make sure people know not to over-estimate their limits, and remind everyone not to get behind the wheel when under the influence of drink or drugs.

North Wales Police launched their Christmas Anti-Drink and Drug Drive Campaign on December 1, and officers will be monitoring hotspots throughout North Wales to detect people who are driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol over the festive period.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

Supported by the #ChooseWisely campaign on social media, officers from the force’s Roads Policing Unit supported by partners will be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to patrol these known hotspots.

Last year, North Wales Police tested 9,448 people at the roadside, with 95 people turning out positive, failing or refusing the test, and 63 drug offence arrests.

    Don’t risk it

We know that the majority of people will make sure they don’t get behind the wheel if they have had a few drinks on a night out making alternative arrangements with taxis or designated drivers.

However, please be aware you could still be over the legal limit the morning after a night out – even if you feel sober and recovered and if you’re above the legal limit, it’s not safe for you to drive.

Even if you are “feeling fine”, you could still suffer from poor reaction times – and that makes for dangerous driving – so the simple message is not to risk it.

Drink and drug driving can cause irreparable damage – people can be injured or even killed in collisions caused by impaired drivers, including the drivers themselves.

So enjoy the festive season responsibly and don’t run the risk of ruining your own life through conviction for drink or drug driving if caught.

“Police will be watching the roads”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “The simple message is that people should not risk drink or drug driving over the Christmas period.

“Even if they don’t end up causing an accident, police will be watching the roads for anyone whom they suspect might be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and will carry out all the appropriate action where needed.

“If anyone thinks they might be over the limit, the simplest thing to do is to not get behind the wheel.”

    “Drink driving can damage lives”

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “Drink or drug driving can damage lives irreparably, and police will be doing everything they can to persuade people not to drink drive, and to take enforcement against those that do.

“We know people like to enjoy themselves at Christmas, but those that do should always make sure they have alternative transport ready.”

Still not sure if you should or shouldn’t make an appointment? Then take a look at the latest Department of Health and Social Care advice here – it could save your life.

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Adult Social Care, said: “Flu kills and certain groups are at risk if they have not had their flu jab. The advice from the DHSC is excellent and if you haven’t already, please take a look at it. It really could save a life.”

  • “Da iawn” for schools in Welsh language awards

“Da iawn” for schools in Welsh language awards

An award ceremony was held at Linden House, Mold, on Monday to celebrate the successes of two Welsh-medium primary schools in Flintshire and Wrexham in Siarter Iaith (Language Charter) – a set of goals set out by the Welsh Government aimed at encouraging more social use of Welsh among young people.

Both of the schools involved have taken part in a number of activities to get pupils using the Welsh language more frequently during the past year, with a focus on the use of the language in less formal situations.

The schools awarded on the day were Ysgol Gwenffrwd, Holywell and Ysgol Bro Alun, Gwersyllt.

Ysgol Gwenffrwd received the gold award which shows the effect of the charter on the school and local community.

Ysgol Bro Alun received the silver award which reflects the implementation stage of the charter. The school will be continuing on its journey towards the gold award this year.

As well as working with parents and their neighbouring communities, the schools involved have also worked with other schools in their counties in order to promote the aims of Siarter Iaith and increase use of the Welsh language among pupils.

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education at Wrexham Council, said: “Congratulations to all those schools involved – their efforts have been very impressive and I’m glad to see them all being commended for their efforts.

“Welsh medium education is incredibly important, and it’s good to note that the participating schools are being recognised in this way for all the work they’ve put in to ensure children are encouraged to speak Welsh not just in school, but outside of the school setting as well.”

Cllr Ian Roberts, Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Youth, said: “Flintshire has a strong commitment to the Welsh language and we want to increase the number of Welsh speakers within our county.

“We support people of all ages to improve their Welsh language skills and to give them the confidence to use the language in their daily lives – at work, at home, at school and in their communities.

“Congratulations to all schools in achieving the Siarter Iaith awards.”

    Superb turnout for Wrexham events

It was billed as a bumper weekend and it lived up to its name as thousands flocked to Wrexham to enjoy themselves last Saturday and Sunday.

Wales Comic Con saw record attendees at Glyndwr University of 15,000 for its tenth year anniversary. Visitors came from across Europe and the UK and many dressed for the occasion to meet their favourite actors and icons from the world of TV, big screen and comics.

Kids were in awe of their favourite stars from Harry Potter, Dr Who and Star Wars whilst the older ones queued very patiently to meet characters from Buffy, Sons of Amarchy, Once Upon a Time, Lord of the Rings, Supernaturl and The Vampire Diaries – to name but a small few! Both young young and old were taken with the gaming area, wrestling marquee, vehicle displays and of course we cannot ignore the cosplayers themselves. They looked magnificient and a big shoutout to them for all their efforts.

Then there was Small Business Saturday and the opening of Santa’s Grotto at Tŷ Pawb in the town centre. Traders are giving us good feedback on the day which saw large numbers of visitors give the town centre a thumbs up.

Finally, over 5,000 flocked to My Racecourse for the 2nd round FA cup draw against Newport Town – no celebrations on that front yet as it was a 0-0 draw with a replay taking place soon – we’re still keeping our fingers crossed for them.

The boost for the town centre was helped by free car parking on Saturday and you can find out what other events are being supported by free parking here.

Good news all round for Ysgol Acrefair

One of our primary schools has had a good bill of health all round in its recent report from education inspectors Estyn.

Ysgol Acrefair has received a rating of “Good” across the board, receiving praise from inspectors in the areas of standards, wellbeing, teaching, care and leadership.

The report says that the school has a “friendly, caring environment”, with good standards of behaviour and self-discipline among pupils.

It also notes that the school plans its curriculum effectively, with teachers helping pupils to develop their creative skills through a “wide range of interesting activities” – including use of the forest school.

Leadership at the school also comes in for praise, noting that “the headteacher provides effective leadership and a clear strategic direction for the school’s work”.

The report adds: “There is a strong culture of continuous improvement and action planning supports improvement well. Staff share leadership responsibilities successfully. The school engages well with parents and has communicated its vision and values effectively.”

Rebecca Turner, Headteacher at Ysgol Acrefair, said: “I’m very pleased with the comments by Estyn’s inspectors in this report.

“As noted within the report, there are always areas of improvement and we will seek to achieve the recommendations outlined by Estyn, but we’re all very pleased with the verdict of the report, and I want to thank all teachers and pupils for their hard work in helping us to achieve these standards.”

Cllr Phil Wynn, Lead Member for Education, said: “The Headteacher and staff at Ysgol Acrefair are to be congratulated for their commitment to delivering a quality educational experience for their pupils, as recognised in Estyn’s recent Inspection report – to achieve a rating of Good across the board is no mean feat.”
