  • What are we doing to help prevent crime?

What are we doing to help prevent crime?

Throughout December, Wrexham Town Centre Police Officers will be teaming up with Licensing and Trading Standards Officers to engage with licensed businesses in a campaign aimed at reducing crime and increasing public safety.

Officers will be speaking to taxi drivers, visiting licensees of pubs and clubs as well as shopkeepers and off licence proprietors. The aim of the campaign is to make licensees aware of their role in crime prevention as well as promoting ongoing partnership work, including the prevention of underage sales of alcohol, domestic violence, theft and the sale of stolen goods.

Officers have been engaging with the trades during all hours of operation, visiting premises and speaking to licensees working in their vehicles.

Joss Thomas, Licensing Team Leader at Wrexham Council said “The campaign is a great example of the strong working partnership between the Police, Council and local businesses. We are very often aware that licensees and business owners can be our ‘eyes and ears’ on the street, they have the ability to look out for illegal activities and can play a key role in supporting the partnership, promoting public safety and assisting our campaigns.”

Sergeant Simon Williams, Wrexham Town centre said “Prevention is a key component to delivering a safer neighbourhood for our communities and our strong working relationship with Wrexham Council continues through the month of December with a number of crime prevention initiatives”.

  • Avoid the unwanted gift of food poisoning this Christmas

Avoid the unwanted gift of food poisoning this Christmas

There are an estimated one million cases of food poisoning in the UK every year, and without attention to food hygiene, this doesn’t stop during the festive season.

To save your loved ones from a nasty bout of food poisoning over Christmas, follow these Food Standards Agency top tips to keep your festive season truly the most wonderful time of the year.

    TOP TIPS

    • When Christmas food shopping, take sufficient bags with you so that you can separate out raw and ready-to-eat foods to avoid cross-contamination.
    • Check the guidance on your turkey to ensure you have enough time to fully defrost it – it could take as much as four days.
    • Don’t wash raw turkey; it just splashes germs onto your hands, clothes, utensils and worktops.
    • To work out the cooking time for your bird, check the instructions on the packaging. Check that: the meat is steaming hot throughout; there is no pink meat visible when you cut into the thickest part and meat juices run clear.
    • Whether you cooked your turkey from frozen or fresh, your turkey leftovers can be used to make a new meal (such as a turkey curry). This new meal can then be frozen, but make sure you only reheat it once.

Adam Hardgrave, Head of Foodborne Disease Control at the Food Standards Agency, said: “The four Cs of food hygiene: Chilling, Cleaning, Cooking and avoiding Cross-contamination are important throughout the year, but especially at Christmas.

“In the flurry of preparing the Christmas meal, it’s important to remember to plan ahead and allow plenty of time. Remember that an average-sized turkey can take four days to fully thaw in the fridge, and it is vital to thoroughly cook a turkey so that the meat is steaming hot, there is no pink meat visible, and that the meat juices run clear.”

Getting a taxi home after your Christmas do? You should read this!

This article is written as part of a series of posts about the #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign

As Christmas approaches and we’re all gearing up for Christmas parties we are reminding everyone of the need to check that any taxi you get into is properly licensed.

All private hire or hackney cab vehicles should be displaying white and purple coloured licence plates which should be on the outside of all vehicles.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

Private hire vehicles will also have yellow adhesive signs in the rear windows.

All drivers should have an ID badge with their name, photograph, licence number and expiry date.  If you can’t see it please ask to see it before you set off.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said, “It’s so easy to jump into a waiting taxi when you leave a night club or similar venue and expect to get home safely. Christmas is a time when some unscrupulous people see a chance to make a few pounds by posing as a legitimate taxi driver. On these occasions the vehicles will be unlicensed and will not have gone through the necessary tests for transporting the public and will not have adequate insurance so it’s worth a quick check before you get in and if you can’t see the driver’s ID badge, please ask to see it.”

During December Licensing Officers will be working with Wrexham Police to spot check taxis to ensure they are all legal and fit for purpose.

Wrexham Council and its partners are promoting the #DrinkLessEnjoyMore campaign, encouraging young people to look after themselves by cutting back on how much they drink before they go out…as well as how much they drink once they get to the bars, pubs and clubs in Wrexham.

It’s true that by drinking less – and knowing your limits – you can have a much better night out.

WATCH: Two heads are better than one – so what will 100,000 of us do?

    A ‘wellbeing plan.’ What’s that?

Short answer…watch the video above. Long answer…read on 🙂

    The big conversation

Over the past couple of years, local people have been encouraged to have their say on the issues they think are most important to Wrexham.

From this, the Public Services Board has produced a ‘well-being plan’ for everyone.

It focuses on how – if we all come together over the next 20 years – we can really make a difference.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

    What’s the ‘Public Services Board’?

The Public Services Board (PSB for short) is a way for organisations in Wrexham to share their ideas and work with local communities to improve things.

Its members include the council, emergency services, local health services, key educational establishments and the voluntary sector.

The PSB has been looking at what communities, organisations and local people can do to make things better.

Ideas so far include growing healthier food, developing more volunteering opportunities, building skills for life for young people and ‘greening’ our streets.

    Watch the video!

This short video shows why so many of us are proud to call Wrexham ‘home.’

It’s five minutes long, but it’s worth a watch – it hopefully gets across the best of who we are, and what we’ll achieve if we all work together.

There’ll be more and more ways to get involved with the project in the future, so we’ll keep you informed.

It’s all about putting our heads together to work out how we can make Wrexham the best it can be…for everyone.

  • Help us make that final recycling hurdle

Help us make that final recycling hurdle

We’re nearing our 70 per cent recycling target – and preventing food waste plays a key part in that.

Last year we hit 65 per cent, and we’re very grateful to the residents of Wrexham for their help in getting us to this point.

But we’ve still got work to do before we hit 70 per cent.

NEVER MISS A BIN COLLECTION – SIGN UP FOR WEEKLY EMAIL REMINDERS.

Tackling food waste would help us make that final five per cent.

    Caddy liners

Earlier this year, we rolled out extra compostable food caddy liners to more than 60,000 homes across the county borough.

The grey kerbside caddies can be used to recycle practically all waste foods, including:

    • Fruit and veg – raw and cooked
    • Meat and fish – raw and cooked
    • Bones and egg shells
    • Rice, pasta, cereal and noodles
    • Bread, cakes, pastries and biscuits
    • Tea bags and coffee grounds
    • Cheese, eggs and yogurts
    • Beans, nuts, pulses and seeds
    • Uneaten food from your plate

“Help us overcome that final hurdle”

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the residents of Wrexham for the work they’ve put in over the past few years in helping us reach our current recycling rate of 65 per cent.

“It will take just a bit more effort for us to reach our goal of 70 per cent, and getting food waste into recycling rather than the black bin will help us overcome that final hurdle.”

Joint op seizes illicit alcohol and tobacco

We always want to make sure that Wrexham is a fair and safe place to do business.

Alongside our partners at HMRC, North Wales Police and inspectors with Wagtail UK, our Trading Standards team investigated a number of retail premises across the County Borough last week – finding a large amount of illicit alcohol and tobacco.

In all, officers seized 8,260 cigarettes, 550g of rolling tobacco and 4,160 litres of alcohol, all of which were illicit products destined for sale in Wrexham. Some food offences were also uncovered by officers.

Half of all long-term smokers die prematurely of smoking-related diseases, and the availability of illegal tobacco poses a significant threat to young people, given its low cost and easy availability.

If young people get access to cigarettes earlier on, it’s all too easy for them to build up a lifelong addiction.

And while criminals can net large profits by selling alcohol without paying duty, there are very big risks to drinking illicit alcohol – illegal copies of well-known brands of spirits are known have caused blindness and even death in the past.

Investigations are now underway into the premises concerned for a number of Trading Standards, food and HMRC offences.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Partnerships, Public Protection and Community Safety, said: “Successful joint operations such as these ensure that Wrexham is a fair and safe place to do business and shop.

“We, alongside our partners in HMRC and North Wales Police, will always investigate reports of illegal activity, and will undertake robust enforcement action when any compliance issues are discovered.

“It should be noted that the majority of businesses visited were co-operative, and had no compliance issues. Those businesses who comply with regulations know that such checks take place to ensure that their legitimate business interests are protected, and to provide them with advice on complying with the law where needed.”
