Bank holiday Monday bin and recycling collections are set to be reintroduced in a move aimed at making service clearer, more reliable and easier for residents to follow.
Previously, when a household’s usual bin collection day fell on a Bank Holiday Monday, residents in those areas would not receive a collection that week, leading to confusion, missed collections, overflowing bins and an increase in complaints.
The reintroduction of Bank Holiday Monday working means residents whose bins and recycling are normally collected on a Monday will be able to put them out as usual, even when it falls on a Bank Holiday.
The change is designed to increase recycling levels, improve participation levels, give residents more confidence in their collection days and reduce the number of complaints linked to Bank Holiday disruption.
Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment said, “This is a positive step for residents and for our waste and recycling service.”
“We know that Bank Holiday Monday’s have caused confusion and frustration in the past, particularly for households who would otherwise miss a collection or have an alternative catch up day. By reintroducing these collections, we’re making the service clearer, more consistent and easier.
“Improving performance in our recycling and meeting our statutory targets are key, this will help support better recycling habits, improve participation and give residents greater confidence that their bins and recycling will still be collected on their usual day.”
The change will apply from August 31, 2026.
Residents are reminded to place their bins and recycling containers out by 7:30am on their usual collection day.
