Fabulous fabric! See how this local school is being inspired by Tŷ Pawb’s new exhibitions

Children from a local school have been getting up close and personal with world class artwork at Tŷ Pawb!

Pupils from St Mary’s RC Primary School in Wrexham are taking part in a series of artist led workshops inspired by Tŷ Pawb’s current exhibitions: Julie Cope’s Grand Tour: The Story of a Life by Grayson Perry and Uptwist Downtwist.

The Grayson Perry exhibition features two enormous tapestries which tell the colourful tale of a fictional character – Julie Cope.

Uptwist Downtwist runs alongside the Grayson Perry exhibition and celebrates Wrexham’s own weaving heritage at the former Celanese factory on the industrial estate.

    A creative collaboration

The school workshops are part of the Arts Council Wales Creative Collaborations project which aims to promote new and innovative ways of engaging with arts and culture.

A different artist is leading the workshops each week, introducing the children to new creative techniques. This week artist Amy Caswell introduced the pupils to silk screen printing. The spectacular results reached the very top of Gallery 2’s vast roof!

“Having this on our doorstep is so valuable”

Katie Edwards, a teacher at St Mary’s school, said: “We’ve had such a blast getting creative at Tŷ Pawb this week. Before this place existed we would have had to travel much further to places like Liverpool and Manchester to see works by artists like Grayson Perry so having this on our doorstep is and so valuable and inspirational for local young people.

“It’s a great space for children to work in. Nice and bright with a high ceiling. The children have had a great time learning about screen printing onto silk and drawing ideas from the exhibitions.

“The results look so impressive and I’d like to thank the Amy Caswell, Ellie Ashby (Tŷ Pawb Learning Coordinator) and all the teachers, staff and volunteers from Tŷ Pawb who helped with the session.”

    Weaving a story through Wrexham

Lead Member for People – Communities, Partnerships Public Protection and Community Safety, Cllr Hugh Jones, said: “The real triumph of these exhibitions is the way they have managed to weave world class artwork from a turner prize winning artist, Grayson Perry, together with Wrexham’s own local textile heritage, involving everyone from ex-factory staff to college students and local school pupils along the way.

“It’s a fantastic achievement and thanks must go to the team at Tŷ Pawb for the huge amount of work they’ve put in to make this possible.”

Uptwist Downtiwst and Julie Cope’s Grand Tour: The Story of a Life by Grayson Perry are on show at Tŷ Pawb until April 22.

  • Would you like to learn more about how it feels to live with dementia?

Would you like to learn more about how it feels to live with dementia?

The Virtual Dementia Tour Bus is returning to Wrexham for four dates in April.

The Virtual Dementia Tour was invented 20 years ago and can give a person with a healthy brain an experience of what dementia might be like. It gives people an opportunity to walk in the world of people living with dementia – and then change the environment and their practice to potentially allow people with dementia to stay at home longer and improve their care.

By walking in the shoes of a person with dementia, we can start to understand the issues that they experience every day. You will experience being confused, isolated, lost, intimidated, vulnerable and much more and therefore understand what you need to change to improve quality of care.

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: “The dementia bus is unique as it gives you the chance to walk in the shoes of someone living with dementia. You can start to understand the many different issues they face every day. You will experience being confused, isolated, lost, intimidated, vulnerable and much more and therefore understand what you need to change to improve quality of care.

“If you have a loved one living with dementia, or would benefit from having better knowledge and more understanding of what it is like to have dementia, get in touch with the team and book a place on the bus.”

The bus will be at the following locations:

    • Gwersyllt Congregational Church – Wednesday, April 24
    • Plas Madoc Leisure Centre – Thursday, April 25
    • The White Lion, Holt – Friday, April 26
    • Tesco, Crescent Road, Wrexham – Saturday, April 27

  • Make sure you look before you book that special meal for mother’s day!

Make sure you look before you book that special meal for mother’s day!

If you are planning that special meal with family this mother’s day, the Wrexham Council Food and Farming Team would like to remind you to ‘look before you book’.

Mother’s day is a time to enjoy and celebrate all of the mum’s in our lives without worrying about food poisoning. But the truth is, you can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy the staff look or by how busy it is.

It’s the things you can’t see – like germs spread by bad hygiene practices – that you need to consider.

APPLY ONLINE FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT IN SEPTEMBER NOW!

There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest – check the food hygiene rating.

The food hygiene rating tells you about hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. It’s really easy to check.

Just go online and check the Food Standards Agency website or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker.

The ratings are determined by our Public Protection officers, and run from 0-5, with a 5 rating meaning a very good level of food hygiene.

Food businesses in Wales are required by law to display their rating sticker following an inspection.

98 per cent of food businesses are rated 3 or better, so there are plenty of places with good standards and you can easily avoid taking your family to those not meeting the grade. Having the green and black sticker on display in the window and checking online for the rating will help you make a better informed choice.

  • Statutory objections open on Barker’s Lane CP School Plans

Statutory objections open on Barker’s Lane CP School Plans

You’ve likely heard about the plans for the extension of Barker’s Lane CP School.

We opened the period of statutory objection on the plans after a meeting of our executive board on Tuesday, March 12.

Extension plans for the school include creating an extension to the existing school building to accommodate a further 105 pupils.

APPLY ONLINE FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT IN SEPTEMBER NOW!

The annual admission numbers will increase by 15 places from 2020 onwards at nursery and reception, and those will feed through the school until the maximum capacity of 315 – plus 45 nursery places – is reached.

    But hasn’t consultation already happened?

Yes – but that was consultation; not statutory objection.

Before we look to make changes with schools, we open up consultation with the local communities on any decisions which we might make, before any decisions are taken by the board.

Once decisions are made, we’re obliged by the law to open the statutory objection period, giving people the chance to make any objections – if they have them.

While it might seem a bit complicated, it takes place whenever we make big decisions with schools – and this one with Barker’s Lane is no different.

So if you have any objections, it’s important that we hear what you’ve got to say.

To submit an objection, read more on the notice on our website.

  • Council team takes on leisure staff in football friendly!

Council team takes on leisure staff in football friendly!

It’s not often we get to pit ourselves against our partners – but earlier this month, council staff did just that!

A team representing Wrexham Council took on counterparts working for Freedom Leisure in a football match on St David’s Day.

The event marked three years since we set up a partnership with Freedom Leisure to run our leisure and activity centres.

The game was a fast-paced one, which saw a total of eight goals scored, and plenty of moments worth celebrating for colleagues and spectators.

Freedom got on the score sheet with a penalty decision, but it was the Wrexham Council side which proved victorious, with a final score line of 6 – 2.

The man of the match was Sam Sides, who scored three of the council’s goals.

Sam said: “It was a great match, I really enjoyed it. I loved playing with experienced good players – we worked really well as a team.

“I would like to thank officers for organising it all, and look forward to any future games against Freedom Leisure.”

Cllr Andrew Atkinson, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty, with responsibility for Leisure, said: “I’d like to thank all those who took part in the game between our staff and Freedom Leisure – matches such as these help to keep up a good co-operative spirit between us and our partners.

“I’m also very pleased to note that the game was held to mark three years of us working with Freedom Leisure to run and improve our leisure and activity centres, and we look forward to continuing to work with them in future.”
