Fact 5: Please remember to wash all recyclable materials to avoid contaminating clean recycling already collected by the recycling vehicle.

  • WATCH: Meet your Welsh Youth Parliament Representatives!

WATCH: Meet your Welsh Youth Parliament Representatives!

The very first Welsh Youth Parliament has been formed and the first debate was held in the Senedd recently.

The aim of the parliament is to give young people a platform to talk about things that matter to them and make a positive impact on the future of Wales.

A total of 60 representatives sat in the Senedd for the first meeting. 40 of the representatives were elected by young people from across Wales and a further 20 were elected by young people from partner organisations.

All 11-18 year olds in Wales were eligible to vote, with about 13,000 registering to choose from a group of 480 candidates.

APPLY ONLINE FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT IN SEPTEMBER NOW!

The candidate voted to represent Wrexham was 16-year-old Jonathan Powell and the candidate voted to represent Clwyd South was 18-year-old Talulah Thomas.

    “It’s a great privilege”

Jonathan said; “The purpose of the Welsh Youth Parliament is quite simple really, it is to get the opinions of young people across Wales and to bring change and to listen to them. It is a great privilege and very important that we can now say we have a Welsh Youth Parliament so that young people from all over Wales can have a voice.”

“When I got there I thought WOW!”

Talking about her experience of the first meeting at the Senedd, Talulah said; “I did worry, at first, that it was going to be a talking shop for young people and not much would really get done. But, when I got there I thought ‘WOW’, the people who are in charge want to hear from us and want to listen to what we have to say. After going, I realised that maybe we can have some sort of influence over what goes on.”

Take a look at more of what they had to say in these short films:

Partner organisations include Girlguiding Cymru, Youth Cymru, Tros Gynnal Plant, Voices from Care, Barnardo’s Cymru and Learning Disability Wales with an aim of ensuring diversity and inclusivity for the new body.

The aim of the Welsh Youth Parliament is to create a debate between the young people and the National Assembly itself, so that they do ultimately influence policies and decisions that will affect their lives.

  • Many had their recycling questions answered at Tŷ Pawb…but if you missed it, here’s a catch up

Many had their recycling questions answered at Tŷ Pawb…but if you missed it, here’s a catch up

Between 10am and 12.30pm on Friday, March 8, our recycling officers and the Lead Member for Environment and Transport were on hand to answer your recycling questions at Tŷ Pawb.

They were also giving out new caddies, caddy liners, recycling bags, recycling calendars and net covers for recycling boxes, to help people in their recycling efforts.

WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

It was a good-spirited atmosphere as Wayne Anderson, Maria Hughes and Cllr. David A. Bithell, the Lead Member for Environment and Transport, answered questions for over two hours.

Cllr. Bithell said: “It was great to talk to the people of Wrexham about recycling and address the things that are on their minds.

“We also gave out a large number of caddies and caddy liners, plus we had some other useful things people could take away with them. People have been very positive and it’s this attitude that will help us reach our 70% recycling target. We really appreciate everyone coming to see us.”

So, what were some of the things on people’s minds?

We’re going to run through some of the most asked questions…

How can I get a new food caddy?

They were giving them out on the day, but it doesn’t matter if you missed this, because you can order a new caddy – for free – on our website. You can also order new recycling boxes and green bins here, although there is a charge for a green bin.

What can I recycle as food waste?

Great question – our recent blog article covers this, which you can read here…

I’m confused by recycling…what goes where?

Again, we’ve got a blog article that covers all this…read all about this here…

Why do I need to clean things before I can recycle them?

Washing your plastic pots, tubs, trays and bottles before they’re collected means a much better quality of recyclable material is sent off to be recycled into new products. We’re not asking you to spend ages cleaning them, just give them a quick swill in your used dishwater to get the food remains off them 🙂

I keep hearing about single-use plastics…what are they?

Basically, single-use plastics are the hard-to-recycle stuff that tends to get used once, and then thrown away. One of the main ways you can get better at recycling is by cutting out single-use plastic and using biodegradable or re-usable options as much as possible. Want to know a bit more? Take our quiz on plastic 🙂

    [interact id=”5c5063a0d075800014e9a2fb” type=”quiz”]

These are just brief selection of some of the questions that were asked. We have a wider selection of frequently asked questions on the main council website.

  • How to order a new food caddy…and thanks for your patience

How to order a new food caddy…and thanks for your patience

More and more people across Wrexham are starting to recycle their food waste, which was shown in the recent figures we published 🙂

REQUEST A NEW FOOD CADDY HERE!

Since we published these, we’ve also had February’s figures through, which show we recycled 146.2 tonnes of food waste for the month. Compared to February 2018’s figures, this is an increase of around eight tonnes!

We’re very pleased to say that we’re continuing to get requests for new food caddies that will help us improve these figures even further – last week we told you we’d received over 160 requests…this figure has now stretched to over 300!

As a reminder, you can request a new food caddy on our website.

WANT TO GET MORE TIPS AND INFO? SIGN-UP FOR OUR RECYCLING EMAILS…

    Patience

Such a large number of requests has meant that an element of patience is needed however, as we work our way through all of these.

Cllr. David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, says: “The large volume of requests for new food caddies is great news, and this is going to go a long way to helping us hit our 70 per-cent recycling target.

“The large number of requests does however mean that some people will have to wait for their new one to arrive, as we work our way through all the orders.

“To these people: we really appreciate your patience, and thanks for helping us to recycle even more.”

A reminder of what can be recycled as food waste can be found in this recent blog 🙂

    Benefits

Recycling your food waste comes with some great benefits…

Along with the environmental benefits of your waste becoming compost (which you can collect for free, from our Recycling Centres by the way), you’re also freeing up space in your black bin.

Plus, your food caddy gets emptied every week and your general waste doesn’t. If you put your food waste in with your general waste, it’ll sit there for a couple of weeks and get a bit stinky.

Don’t forget about the free caddy liners too…if you need a new roll of caddy liners, just tie an empty one to your food caddy and you’ll get left a new roll on your collection day.

REQUEST A NEW FOOD CADDY HERE!

As always, thanks for recycling 🙂

  • New exhibition to open at Wrexham Museum

New exhibition to open at Wrexham Museum

Penley Hospital: The Story of a Polish Community in Wales.

International events and local history combine together in Penley Hospital: The Story of a Polish Community in Wales, the latest exhibition at Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives.

Eighty years ago the Wehrmacht and the Red Army swept across the borders of Poland setting in motion a train of events that would lead to the establishment of three Polish hospitals in the Welsh countryside near Wrexham, in the village of Penley and the grounds of two country houses, Iscoyd Park and Llannerch Panna.

These hospitals were unique, being staffed by Polish medics and nurses whose job was to care for the thousands of Polish servicemen and service women displaced from their homes, battle worn and weary, and now living in post-war Britain. The hospitals became the focal point of a Polish community whose story is told in this new exhibition.

The exhibition, created with the help of former residents of Penley Hospital camp and volunteers includes:

    • Artefacts from the former hospital and its chapel such as the reredos (a three-part artwork centred on the Madonna and Child.
    • A film based on archive recordings of life at the hospital in the 1960s
    • Oral histories of former residents and staff at the hospital
    • A slideshow of photographs of the community
    • A chance for younger ones to dress up in Polish style national costume, following a well-established tradition at Penley.

Councillor Hugh Jones, Deputy Leader of Wrexham County Borough Council, said “I would like to thank all those who have helped staff at the museum to stage this exhibition. Your assistance and involvement has been invaluable in telling the amazing story of the Polish community who were unable to return home to Poland because of the Communist regime in that country and the Soviet occupation of their homeland. Their story still resonates today.”

Councillor John McCusker, Member for Overton Ward said: “I am very pleased to see this interest from the County Borough Museum in the extraordinary history of the village of Penley and how the arrival of the Polish community had a huge impact on the village. Relatives of former residents still revisit the area and are always made very welcome.”

The exhibition opens at Wrexham Museum on March 18th and runs until June 22nd 2019. A reunion of former staff and families connected to Penley Hospital is planned for May.

    Wrexham Museum is open Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Courtyard Café is open 10 a.m. to 4 .30 p.m.

For more information contact the museum on 01978 297460
